Kira turned the key in the lock, feeling surreal and like she didn't really belong. It was her house, but it didn't feel like it. To be honest, Kira was just waiting to wake up. Maybe she was knocked out by a Hipogriff and was lying in one of the infirmaries. She was keeping all the options open, including, rather reluctantly, that this was actually happening.
She had gotten a letter a few weeks ago, telling her that some distant relative had died and she was the next of kin. The lady didn't have any children, or nephews or nieces and was her Mum's second cousin. At first, Kira thought it was an elaborate prank of some kind and she didn't pay any real attention to the letter. Then, a lawyer got in touch with her and told her she needed to sign some papers so she could be the legal owner of the house.
"What." was her clever initial response.
The lawyer then went on to explain everything, but by the end of his speech, Kira didn't know anything except that apparently, she owned a house now. The relative had owned three dogs as well and the lawyer assured her that she didn't have to take care of them, they could take them to a shelter. It was then that Kira snapped out of it and told the man just what she thought of that idea.
After all the legal things have been taken care of, Kira was left with a daughter, three dogs, an apartment in New York and a house in Scotland. She took a day to think about everything and wrote to the schools that sadly, she couldn't come in for at least a week. There were things she had to deal with, including a funeral for the lady that died.
Now the witch was standing in the dimly lit hallway, with her hands shaking slightly and trying to get used to the idea that this was hers. She walked through the door to a cosy, yet spacious kitchen that had a little island counter with bar stools and there was a huge dining table and the sun was shining in at a perfect angle and it was then that Kira started thinking of the house as her home. It reminded her of her childhood home and nostalgia crept up on her out of nowhere.
She shook her head, swallowed the lump in her throat and walked through the kitchen to the living room area. The furniture looked like it belonged to a tiny old lady who lived alone, which is basically what it was. There were doilies everywhere and armchairs and the couch were covered in -probably- home made quilts, there were framed pictures of the previous owner and her dogs on the mantelpiece and all in all, it was a very homey atmosphere. Kira smiled as she looked closely at the pictures and ran her hands over the frames. It looked like the lady, Diana Gad loved the house and her pets and Kira was glad about that, even though she's never met her.
There was a bedroom and a bathroom downstairs as well and three more bedrooms upstairs, along with two bathrooms. They were quite spacious and Kira already had an idea of how to fill them.
Ever since she's adopted Diem, she wanted to help more children in the same way. The only problem was that there wasn't really any space for more people in the New York flat and, well, now that was taken care of. She was planning on getting in touch with a few more adopting agencies and she hoped she would be able to adopt more kids. Everyone deserved a family and someone to take care of them. Kira hoped she could be that person for more children.
