Mary sighed inwardly at the prospect of working with other people, but smiled at Professor Zanderson and took the bandana. It wasn't the Professor's fault she was in a bad mood, after all. She looked around for other red bandanas as she tied her own around her wrist, figuring it'd be the least inconvenient there. The only other one on her team seemed to be Ares, a fellow Wormwood and she walked over to him. Smiling and nodding in greeting, the witch hoped they'd work well together.
"Ready?" she asked him before setting off into the maze, gripping her wand tight. As the witch saw the first clue, she paled and started to feel nauseous. Dementors? Dementors?! "What the-" she muttered and then the first dementor was rising.
Memories of the Quidditch attacks came before her eyes, filled her mind with screams and chaos and it was unbearable and this couldn't be happening again, oh God. Mary fought hard to push the memories away, on the edge of her mind and instead focused on making sure Ares was standing behind her, so the dark creature couldn't hurt him. She tried to think of happy memories, of Lydia and Oscar, of training with Jake, of moving in with Gavin in a few months, of Christmas with her family, of anything even remotely happy.
"E-Expecto Patronum." A silvery mist erupted from her wand, floated in front of her for a few seconds and then evaporated. Mary let out a frustrated groan and panicked as the Dementor was moving towards her. She tried again, this time the memories were clearer in her mind and her voice wasn't shaking as much as before. This time, something vaguely resembling an owl flew out of her wand, towards the Dementor. It backed away back where it came from and Mary let out a shaky breath.
Presuming Ares hasn't learnt the spell yet, as he was in his second year, Mary turned to him and managed a smile. "To do the Patronus Charm, you have to think of something really, really happy and then say 'Expecto Patronum'. Don't worry if you don't get it on your first try or at all, it's an incredibly difficult piece of magic. If you know all this already, that's great, but I wanted to make sure." the Head Girl explained, her voice still shaking. What was the Professor thinking, making the students fight Dementors?
