PostSubject: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptyMon Sep 08, 2014 7:38 am

The summer had been something of a difficult one for Louis. A transition, to say the least. As a Clement he had a duty first and foremost to his line, something that had become increasingly difficult to opt out of when his brother had passed away. He'd left the woman he loved behind to fulfil the role of heir to the Clement fortune, and life was completely out of balance. Thankfully, however, his parents insisted on the six month mourning period, so at the moment, he was not being pestered with prospective wives.

It therefore meant that coming back in to the university to teach was a welcome break, especially with the dismissal of one of the least capable members of the team. Now... he might actually be able to teach without having to fight an overly inflated ego. Stepping in to the classroom, Louis barely had to move his hands before the lights flickered in to use. The classroom was of the normal set up and Louis moved to the front, putting down the files of those who had been approved to study on the course.

With a small flick of his hand a copy of the lecture notes got moved to each desk along with a pen for each student. Louis wasn't going to take chances with organisation. With that done, the Frenchman sat at his desk, back straight and his eyes trained on the door. Today would be difficult for some of his students, but the best was still to come, of that much Louis was quite certain.

Marilyn fought down a smile as she entered the classroom, looking as professional as possible given that she was rather excited to finally attend her favorite Professors class. It was no secret that Prof. Clement was pretty much exactly the type of Auror she aspired to be and personality-wise she wasn't far off. But the woman knew that she'd have to continue training and studying long and hard to get closer to her goals.

That in mind she entered and walked up to the front, nodding and giving him a small, polite smile as she walked up to the front row and took her seat with a "Hello, Sir."
Then taking her script of the lecture notes and scanning them as she waited for the lesson to start. A good skill to hone, scanning, to save time.

Today was the day that Jake would finally meet the man that Marilyn had told him about on multiple occasions. Jake was a little worried, from what Marilyn had said their professor was going to be no nonsense, though in all honesty, deep down Jake knew this wasn't going to be a problem.

After a quick errand at the Ministry, Jake had navigated back to the university. After checking the room number, Jake had hurried up to the class and slipped through the door, mindful that his shirt was completely in place as Marilyn had once again insisted that he made sure he was tidy.

"Good morning, sir." Jake acknowledged the man at the front of the room, slipping in to the seat beside Marilyn. He kept his distance from the warning that he'd been given beforehand. Not that it was difficult, Marilyn and he were capable of keeping their distance, especially when they were working, today would be no different.

"Caldwell." Jake acknowledged with a small smile at the irony of such things, especially seeing as they'd woken up together not two hours before. But after that, Jake turned his attention to his notes, flipping open the first page and beginning to read.

Scarlett was loving university life. She enjoyed the freedom of being an adult, and preferred it over school life by a lot. She had woken up early this day, and gotten ready, fresh for the beginning of her new course. She made her way to the university, grabbing some toast on the way out, and finishing it outside the classroom before she entered "Morning sir," she greeted as she walked over to her desk. Seeing the notes already there, she sat down and began to read through them.

Unseen University was definitely a new experience, and not one that really made him want to slack off. He was scared, scared of losing his scholarship, scared of being thrown out, all these things that never mattered ever in his life before. Also there was Rhian, his only cheerleader who loved him and really wanted him to do well. He felt this pride knowing that his girlfriend was telling people she was dating a university man.

Chuckling, he pushed the door open and popped his head in to see that there were people already there. Walking in, he noticed that the professor had this aura about him too, commanding based on his posture. He knew a hardass when he saw it. Sitting in the back, he took out his notebook and pen and began to copy it al down in case they would disappear before his eyes.

Aaron was just so glad that he wasn't late for Clements class, he didn't want to keep being late for classes because that was bad on his part and he'd never be an Auror if this kept happening to him. The old Salem/Hogwarts boy walked in and took a seat, he knew that Interrogation was really important so he needed to give 110% to all of his classes so he could succeed in this career.

Ben walked through the halls, taking in the sights and sounds of the castle. It was different from Hogwarts, that was certain. In the other school, it was easy to tell who you were talking to. First years were tiny, scared little things, while some seventh years, like him, towered over a few of the professors. Here, though, it was harder. He'd already had class with a few people he recognized, some past classmates, but others had been quite a bit older. It was all rather...strange.

Arriving at the next class, he was glad to see he was on time, if not the first. He recognized his classmates now, since they were all in the same program. His old urge to take the front of the class was pushed aside as he saw his roommate near the back. Ben was never one for sentiment, aside from one specific witch. But if he were, Conner would be somewhere on his radar. He and the other boy had been work partners since year one, and he was the closest thing Ben had to a friend.

Taking the next desk in the back, he set down his bag, pulling out a blank pad of paper just in case. He could probably take notes on the outline in front of him, but that was all a bit messy, in the end. No, he'd rather keep things separate. Organized.

When it seemed everyone was here, though there was one name short, Louis decided to crack on. However, the first thing that needed to be addressed was the lack of respect three of the members of the class held. Pointing his finger to the door, it snapped shut a moment later, signalling that the class was now in session. "First lesson of the day, to those who think it's okay to enter this room without acknowledging me, please make sure that it doesn't happen again. You will learn respect from the beginning, or you will not return to my class again."

His eyes moved between Bailey, Rosier and Watson, showing that that would be there first and last warning.

"Good morning everyone, to those new to the course my name is Clement. You will refer to me as that, or sir, nothing else. Before you, you will see that you have a set of course notes, feel free to make notes as we work, though I will not be using the notes. These are for your own use and I will expect you to have read through all of them before the second part of the lesson. You will be tested, so don't take this lightly." Louis explained, his eyes casting around the room to make sure everyone was taking this completely seriously. Once satisfied, the man cast his hand behind him to the board where the word Interrogation became apparent.

"As you're aware, our topic for this lesson covers that of interrogation. First off, lets brainstorm what we already know. So, if you have an answer, please stand, speak clearly for everyone to hear you. I'm looking for Muggle and magical means of interrogation, so please don't stick to one form." Louis explained, looking around the room to see who would be the first to answer.

Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptyWed Sep 24, 2014 6:27 pm

Marilyn set the notes down when the door shut, turning her attention to her professor as he began with a warning to some that had her inwardly wince, knowing Clement was strict, but he really knew what he was doing. Hearing that the content would be tested Mari mentally scheduled another study session to her weekly plan, just to be sure she got it really right.

As he posed the question the witch took a moment to form a coherant answer. Of the members of the class Marilyn knew that she very likely one of the ones with the most practical experience in the area of interrogation. Of being interrogated. And rather than be drowned in memories she detatched herself from them and tried to extract the facts from her captivity and what she'd learned from her grandmother.

Standing she looked Clement in the eye calmly and spoke, "A common method of interrogation is torture, Sir. Both muggle and magical and ranging from pyschological to physical. Intended to put the target in a stressed state to the point where they give answers just to make it stop. Magical methods include but are not limited to the use of unforgivables; the cruciatis curse is most popular, or the use of sense stimulating hexes and sense eradicating hexes that respectivly overstimulate the target or cause them to panic from lack of sensory feedback. Common muggle methods, for example, would be knives," her scarred shoulder tensed ever so slightly,

"...gun play or hand-to-hand violence. It is not uncommon to see a mixture of the two classes, such as cursed blades or magically controlled whips. Sometimes simply the threat of any is enough to make the target break." A, to her, sick twinge of pride pricked her consciousness. She'd withstood all of that. She'd survived. The cost had been immeasurable. But she'd done it. With that she nodded and sat down, voice steady through her answer, but her shoulder remained tense throughout the process, scarred face expressionless.

Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptyThu Sep 25, 2014 8:08 am

As Clement began to talk, and introduce the class, Scarlett set her notes back on the table and paid her full attention to the man. He posed the question, and she waited while Mari answered. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of odd sympathy for the girl. Although she had kept her composure well, her voice steady, Scar could sense a certain odd objectivity, and a rigid stance as Mari spoke.

Once Mari had finished speaking and had sat back down, Scar stood up to give her own answer. "Legilimency may be another, less cruel way of interrogation." she said "It would allow information to be extracted quite easily, and relatively valid, assuming the person either isn't expecting it, or isn't trained in occlumency. If they are, it is a lot more difficult though, as they might be resistant, or there is a possibility of tampering with their own memories," she stated. And with that, she sat back down in her seat.

Louis was not surprised in the slightest to see Caldwell stand up first. Many may be surprised that a witch of her background would, many would be surprised she'd signed up, but Louis knew a fighter when he saw one. The moment the witch began to speak, chalk moved to the board, writing down what she said in it's simplest form. Torture. It was not a nice concept, Louis knew that, but it was one that was both very real, and very possible for everyone of them in the room to be faced with at some point in their career. Giving or receiving the torture made little and less difference to the professor.

"Very good, Caldwell. Straight in the deep end, but a good one to bring to light early on. Yes, torture is a means of interrogation, and I'm afraid to say that the likelihood that any of you will not be subjected to it in your line of work will be highly unlikely. It is one of the most common methods of information extraction, and one you will all need to learn to combat should the need arise. Sit down, Caldwell." Louis told the witch, he knew the look on her face, but soon the witch would know that she was safe here.

The next witch to stand was not a surprise either. The two girls who'd spoken had been the two already through one year of training, so already one step ahead of the rest, familiar, you could say.

"Legilimency may be another, less cruel way of interrogation."

The opening sentence was one that made a small, wry smile play on Louis' lips. Oh dear, he thought to himself as he listened to the witch explain. There was nothing wrong with her answer, of course, Louis couldn't deny that much. "Correct, Waters. Legillimency is possibly one of the most used forms of interrogation within the Ministry. I'm not saying we're limited to this, but it is the best place to start with an interrogation scenario." Louis explained as the chalk moved against the board, simplifying what they were saying to a single word once more. "Sit, Waters."

Louis paused, waiting for see if anyone else would offer an answer. "If you are struggling with an idea of interrogation method, you may give me a method of combatting an interrogation, if you'd prefer." Louis offered the class, looking to those who hadn't answered yet.

Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptyMon Sep 29, 2014 3:35 pm

When the original question had come, Jake had nervously looked towards Mari to check she was okay. This... was going to be a difficult lesson for her, Jake was quite sure. But she was here and he knew that professionalism was what counted most. If she needed him though, Jake would be there to help her in an instant, screw the notion of being professional.

But instead of sitting back, Mari had moved to the forefront of the class, standing first to give an answer. He was, to be perfectly honest, completely taken back by the witch. Throughout all of her explanation she'd remained calm, and he was proud of her. When she sat down, Jake whispered a soft 'well done' to the witch before concentrating on what Scarlett was saying. He nodded along with her answer, having only just taught it at Hogwarts to his older students, Jake already knew it to be right before Clement replied.

"If you are struggling with an idea of interrogation method, you may give me a method of combatting an interrogation, if you'd prefer."

Jake had forgotten to think of an answer, stunned by Marilyn's answer and then too much in teacher mode to remember he was a student, that the sentence jolted Jake back to what he was supposed to be doing. So, standing up, his posture perfectly straight and his eyes not faltering from the man in front of him, Jake spoke confidently.

"You can use Veritaserum, sir. The potion, as all are probably aware, makes the drinker speak nothing but the truth. However, like most magical and non magical methods, a resistance can be made to the potion, either becoming immune to it's powers, or by not speaking when asked a question. It is, of course, very difficult to do the latter, but not impossible." Jake explained, glad that for once his knowledge in Potions was applicable to real world situations. Jake waited until he was told to sit and once he had, the young man pulled his notebook towards him, copying down what was written on the board as he waited for further instructions or answers.

Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptySun Oct 05, 2014 4:49 am

At her Professors affirmation and allowance to sit down Marilyn nodded and complied, nodding ever so subtly at Jake's reassurance. Taking a deep breath, taking in the calming smell of mint beside her. A small way to remember that she was safe; something that, despite trusting Clement, Scarlett and Jake, was sometimes difficult to remember. A side effect, so to say, of her time in captivity.

Mentally shaking herself to not dwell like that she forced her attention back to Jake who was now adding another method. Veritaserum. Luckily, well contextually lucky, Marilyn had not been subjected to the potion in her time in Guantanamo. Most of her time there had been focused on torture. But not just for information, perhaps in the beginning that had been a factor, when they'd bound her to jagged rock walls with magic and tried to extract information on the schools from her, to no avail she was proud to say, Mari had withstood interrogation to the point of frequently passing out. But she was only one of many, they'd gotten what they'd wanted from others.

Then the torture became something of a passtime to the Widows that stood guard, growing bored and restless with their stay on the desparing island and for them what could be a better passtime than listening to the screams of their prisoners. Marilyn was certain she could no longer remember all the methods of torture inflicted upon her, but for the sake of the class and moving on she tried. There had been few legilimens amongst the widows there and emptying your mind was easy when you thought you had nothing to lose...

Ways of combatting interrogation...how did she do it? She was in isolation in a darkened cell where she couldn't even tell the days apart...she'd been so empty inside... Sometimes she wondered if this was even all real, if she was still in a cell. But she wasn't, Marilyn was here, safe, in class.

Standing again, eyes unseeingly staring at the board, "Escaping is an obvious way of evading or combatting interrogation, though in many or most situations it will be difficult or near impossible so one shouldn't rely on it. When being interrogated, no matter how, it's usually in a ways that puts you in a situation that makes you want to do anything to get out of it. So to resist it you need something to hold onto in your mind that's more important than the personal need to get out."   Marilyn, in the face of death and desparation had found her hold in something her captors had unknowingly given her. The children that had been tortured and killed around her. She would do anything to minimize the number of children who'd endure that, so she refused to give any information that would lead to their further demise, at all cost.

Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory)   Interrogation (Part 1 - Theory) EmptySun Oct 05, 2014 10:52 am

As the next person to stand up was the first male to speak, Louis was glad this one had a back bone. A back bone but respect too. The answer was a good one, an answer that noted itself on the board under the heading of 'potions'. It wasn't a bad idea, very, very common actually, and one that most certainly was worth noting. "Very good, Newbury. Sit down." Louis replied once the boy was finished, looking around the class for who would be next.

It came back to Marilyn, Louis was quite proud to see the witch was putting herself forward so often in this field. The answer that came from Marilyn was one that was very good, once again. The key points were noted on the board, and Louis nodded. "Very good once again, Caldwell." Louis acknowledged. "The frame of mind of all of you will of course have been tested before you entered the programme in the psychological test you sat to get in to the course. But, it's not just the start you have to be prepared." Louis explained, looking around the class at the various faces.

"Whilst it may not be easy to remember the things that matter when you are in extreme pain, or being threatened, you should all think about the things that do matter to you on many occasions. There may come a time where you need to truly focus on these things to get you through situations you never envisaged. This, will be part of your home study in the coming weeks. Find the things that mean something to you and immerse yourself in them." Louis explained, allowing a pause. "For those of you struggling with this notion, find something before you're pushed in to the field.

"Now, there are three main things you will need to give if you're faced with an interrogation situation. Your name. Your rank. Your squadron number. Obviously, when in this situation, you will all be given the rank of Auror, you may choose to disclose your specific area of expertise if you wish, but the role of Auror is enough. Your squadron number is five-seven-two-four for the American Ministry, and six-eight-one-five for the British Ministry." He allowed a pause for them to write this down. "You do not, under any circumstances reveal any more information to the interrogation officer."

The Frenchman moved to stand behind his desk, allowing all of the information to sink in a little longer before he brought his hands together, trying to get the attention of the class to be back on him and not on the things that had been said. "This has been a brief overview of everything your notes say. We have not covered every kind of interrogation, because quite honestly, the list is longer than your arm. The text goes through the different scenarios, so read it through. You may owl me with any queries you might be having. To those of you who haven't participated openly in this class, I will expect to see results from you in the practical part of the course next time I see you. But, for now, please leave, I will see you all after Christmas." With that, Louis flicked his wrist towards the door, opening it and taking a seat at his desk in case anyone had questions for him.
