Its been a while (Jake)

Katherine was just roaming the halls at Hogwarts, she let her mind drift a bit to what her life was, taking care of a son, a dog, and barely seeing her husband. A lot of Aurors did come home once in a while, but Cyr was doing to Auror traveling with a few of his Auror buddies. Katherine barely hears from him and he wonders why when he comes home every once in a while she is semi annoyed. Katherine barely noticed that she was now in front of the DADA classroom. Katherine saw Jake inside and she decided that she'd talk to him. Her best friend Azalea is dating him and Cyr had a falling out with him, but she barely speaks to Jake because she is always so busy and dealing with her marriage drama. She couldn't control her feet from walking inside and shutting the door.

"Nice room you got here" Katherine looked around the room.

Jake had finally settled in to his classroom, it'd only taken him the best part of two months to feel comfortable in the space, which was no-one's fault but his own. Becoming a fully fledged teacher had been daunting to start with, tiring later, and exhausting now. But Jake was thoroughly enjoying his time at the school.

Jake was just tidying up his classroom for the day, happy in the thought that he'd be going home to Azalea now, when the door opened. Looking up, a smile graced Jake's lips, Katherine Harrisson stood before him, a welcome surprise to say the least.

"Nice room you got here"

"I'm sure yours is just as spacious!" Jake replied warmly, despite everything, the room had been put in to neat order, with some learning posters on the wall, but mostly it was empty. Workable. "How are you, Katherine? Haven't heard from you... well, since the summer when I got to see Dave!"

Katherine couldn't help but laugh at Jake's response a bit. "Yes it is, it feels like home in there even though it is only my home for the entire school year, not the summer" Katherine replied. Hogwarts was her home long before she became a Professor, being a Hufflepuff and always showing up for classes was something she loved do in her high school years. "I am doing good, dealing with bear and Dave all at the same time while Cyr is out and about. It gets hard but there is nothing I can do about it" Katherine explained.

"If Dave was a handful then I am sorry" she apologized, she knew how her son could be at times and wouldn't blame Jake if he got annoyed with her little man. "So how are you Jake? You better be treating my best friend well."

As Katherine explained the school felt more like home, Jake wasn't sure whether he should be worried or happy for the blonde. Afterall, Cyr and her were married, had their own home and a kid, surely that should have been home? But the explanation came a moment later, and Jake realised just how hard it must be for the witch, basically being a single mother and working. "Cyr has been away a lot with the Black Widow problems?" Jake asked, grimacing slightly at the thought.

And how this so easily could have been Azalea...

"If Dave was a handful then I am sorry"

"Oh, no, on the contrary, he was as good as gold!" Jake insisted, smiling warmly. "Dave's a good kid, your work has not been for nothing, I can assure you!" The Quidditch star explained, he'd had a lot of fun with Azalea's godson, if truth be told.

"So how are you Jake? You better be treating my best friend well."

"As if I would treat Azalea as anything less than a princess!" Jake insisted, before realising what he'd said and going a deep shade of crimson. Merlin what was that going to sound like to someone else? "But... uh, yeah, I'm fine. We're fine. Busy, as always, but otherwise fine. You should come over to Canada some time, you and Dave are always welcome on weekends if Cyr is away so much." Jake offered, knowing Azalea would never mind seeing her best friend more.

Katherine nodded to Jake when he brought up the Black Widows, Katherine was absolutely petrified everyday when she knew that Cyr was out there looking for the Black Widows to kill them or imprison them. "Yes he has and it frustrates me everyday because I am here working and taking care of Dave while he is out and about. I know he is doing his job but it would be great if he popped in once in a while, Dave hardly knows who his father is" Katherine hated this situation.

"Well that's good to know, sometimes he has his moments where he can get antsy" Katherine was glad to know her son was good for Jake. "Thank you Jake, I'm glad there is a guy outside my family that thinks that. Whenever Cyr is here he never compliments me on how good our baby looks or that I've taught him how to talk good by sitting down and playing speech tapes" Katherine really wished Cyr was around more.

"I'm glad to hear that, I'd have to hurt you if you did and that is coming from the Miss Sunshine" everybody knew that Katherine barely liked violence, she was always happy, hardly sad, she was a beacon of light to everyone and rarely got annoyed. "That is a kind offer, I will have to take you up on that some day" Katherine replied. She'd love to see where her best friend resided in.

As Katherine explained that Cyr wasn't around for his baby, Jake's heart went out to the blonde witch. Azalea and he had discussed children, very briefly, and deciding in many years time, but never would Jake dream of having a kid and leaving all the work to Azalea. "I don't know what I can say, Katherine..." Jake replied solemnly. "Have you tried talking to him about it? I mean, if you two need time to talk Azalea and I would be happy to babysit for the night."

It was an offer, and about as much help as Jake could be. Evidently Katherine and Cyr had a lot of talking to do, and children most definitely didn't need to be around such things.

Then the part where Cyr didn't tell his wife how great she was with the kid. Jake could feel anger towards the Auror. Sure, open compliments weren't usually men's style with the upbringing of their children, but if Katherine believe Cyr thought little of her for the amazing display, Jake wouldn't stand by. "If Cyr can't see it, he's an idiot. Honestly, Katherine, there are very few women in this world who could pull off working and being a full time mom just like you." And with that, the Defence Professor moved around his desk and pulled her in to a hug, because damnit this woman needed it.

As well as some time with her husband.

"I'm glad to hear that, I'd have to hurt you if you did and that is coming from the Miss Sunshine"

"I can assure you, Katherine, I will never hurt Azalea. My past is my past, and Azalea... well, she's my future, and I plan to make her happy... for a long time." Jake told the blonde, letting go and perching on the edge of his desk. It was weird saying it out loud. Such things with Azalea were hard to talk about, but Katherine would understand. She'd known Azalea longer, she would know how the younger witch worked. "And our flat is always open to anyone. If you plan on staying, just let us have some notice and we can make up the spare room."

When Jake said he didn't know what to say, she gave him a reassuring smile. "It is okay Jake, please don't worry about trying to find words to say to me for comfort" Katherine knew that she didn't want to bug people with her marriage problems, it would be to embarrassing. When Jake asked if she talked to Cyr, she sighed. "Yes I have, but right when a sentence comes out of my mouth he ends up saying how he needs to work" Katherine explained.

Katherine couldn't help but let a sad smile come upon her face. She didn't know how to explain it but she knew that what Jake said was true. She felt like an idiot in a way, fell in love young, married young, had a child young. She couldn't handle it all on her own, not anymore. "Thank you Jake, it really means a lot and I wish that Cyr could see that as well but he cannot" Katherine sighed.

The blonde didn't know what to say, but she knew that Jake was absolutely serious. "Well that is good to know Jake, thank you for being honest" Katherine was grateful for that. "I shall take you up on that, I need time to think this all over first before I do anything hasty" Katherine replied.

Jake listened to the witch as she spoke about how Cyr hid behind his job. To this point the Quidditch star had no problem with the Auror, but hearing him being such an ass? It wasn't right, in any manner. "I'm sorry, for all of that, Katherine." Jake told the witch sincerely.

Relationships, marriage were difficult, Jake was aware, but he'd never realised it could go south so early.

"I shall take you up on that, I need time to think this all over first before I do anything hasty"

"Nothing too hasty." Jake agreed with the witch with a nod. Everything took time if you wanted to make the right decision, and Katherine's was huge. Jake was glad it wasn't him in the witch's place, because he knew he couldn't decide.

Katherine felt tears enter her eyes, she didn't want to seem like a baby so she made sure they didn't fall, she didn't want to feel like extra baggage that someone had to deal with. "Its okay Jake, I should have known that being young and in love wouldn't get me very far with all of this, its time for me to try and move on from all of this even though it will hurt" Katherine explained to him. Katherine knew that Jake had no idea what to say to her and she didn't blame him for that, it was all okay and she completely understood.

"Thanks Jake" she was grateful her best friend had a good boyfriend like Jake.

When Jake saw tears forming in the blonde's eyes, he moved from his perch on the table and pulled her in to an embrace. The young man didn't care what people might say if they were to walk in, Katherine was Azalea's best friend, and by default that meant she meant a lot to both halves of the couple.

"It might hurt, Katherine, but Azalea and I will be there for you through it all, I promise." Jake told the witch, rubbing her back to try and keep her from crying. Crying girls were never his forte. But if that was what Katherine needed, Jake would be there for her right now.

"Thanks Jake"

"There's no need to thank me for looking out for my friends." Jake told the witch softly.

Katherine couldn't help but return the embrace, this was all just too painful for her so having all of this happen was taking a toll on her. Katherine hated how she was the one who got crushed out of the deal, it wasn't fun to raise a small boy, work, take care of a dog, and be the happy wife everyone expected her to be. Dave barely knew who his father was and Cyr obviously didn't care.

"You have no idea how much it hurts Jake" Katherine sniffled before continuing. "Everyone expects so much from me and me being me goes along with it but I don't know if I can. I always dreamt of being the perfect wife and raising kids but not by myself" Katherine's dream was so wonky now.

"You are a good friend and a amazing boyfriend, I'm glad Azalea has you" Katherine complimented him on his relationship with Azalea. Katherine never looked at the past, she focused on the present and future.

"You have no idea how much it hurts Jake"

"I don't." Jake agreed softly, and Merlin he hoped he would never have to. Being so distant from Azalea... No, that wasn't an option he could even begin to contemplate at the moment. "But what I do know is that you'll have the support that Azalea and I can give you. Anything to help, Katherine, you just have to tell us." The young man insisted. The mention of dreams made Jake nod, everybody had dreams, and he doubted Katherine's would be far off from most people's.

"You are a good friend and a amazing boyfriend, I'm glad Azalea has you"

"I try my best, at both of those." Jake amended, he never saw himself as an amazing boyfriend. He got things wrong, he wasn't there enough, there was always room for improvement, but Azalea never complained. Letting the blonde witch go, Jake gave her a small smile, trying to reassure her. "It's going to be okay, Katherine, whatever happens, it's going to be okay. I promise." He told her, firmly believing in that sentence because one of them had to.

Katherine knew for a fact that Jake was serious and was a great guy for her best friend since childhood. Katherine was glad that Azalea didn't rush into anything like Kat had because now Kat was dealing with a nasty divorce. "Thank you Jake, you're a great friend and I hope you and Azalea make it through the long run, you're a great guy for her and I'm happy that she gave you a chance even after knowing your reputation" Katherine was grateful for Jake, she didn't think she'd come crying to him about her problems but she was glad she did.

"Thank you Jake, I'm glad to know I have people on my side. I know some of Cyr's Auror friends owled me asking if I could forgive him" Katherine shrugged. All she did was ignore those owls.

When Katherine expressed her wish for Azalea and him to make it in the long run, Jake gave her a smile. "We take it one day at a time, but I hope so too." Jake told her, it was the truth, the brief discussion on the future had been enough to Jake to know that now was not the time.

"And, I'm not the guy that frequented Salem anymore. It was a long time ago. I just want to spend as long as possible with Azalea." He admitted his cheeks heating once more.

"It's your decision," Jake explained, reassuring her that what she'd done was right. Picking up a stack of papers from his desk, Jake turned back to the witch. "I really have to get these submitted for the kids though, Kat. Bad timing, I know, but come over to Canada some time. I'm sire Azalea would love to see you and her Godson."

Katherine nodded and she was extremely happy for her best friend for finding a guy who truly loves her. "Well I'm glad that works for you two, I couldn't be more proud of the two of you for overcoming the obstacles that life throws at you" Katherine genuinely meant that to Jake.

"Well that's good to hear Jake" it was good to know that Jake actually wanted to spend time with Azalea unlike Cyr with her.

When she realized Jake was busy she nodded. "Oh of course, sorry to keep you from your work. And I will bring him by for both of you to see, he has grown since the wedding, but I will leave you to everything. Bye Jake" Katherine gave a goodbye hug before leaving the DADA room.
