Operation Day (Jari)

There was perhaps no greater feat than swallowing all of your fear to be the rock of confidence to your girlfriend, but the days that lead up to Marilyn's operation, Jake had done exactly that. He'd taken the day off with Marilyn - seemingly her leave had extended to him without him needing to ask Louis, for which he was grateful.

The evening before, Jake had taken to trying to make Marilyn as comfortable as possible, cooking for her despite her not touching a bite, trying to take her mind off of what was coming by playing stupid board games that neither of them wanted to play, putting on her favourite film (Pretty Woman) and cuddling her. Even showing her how much he loved her in physical form had only worked long enough for Marilyn to reach a high and then Jagger had forced his way back in to the room.

Jake knew he hadn't been much help, but he'd done his best through the night, falling in and out of sleep when he felt Marilyn stirring beside him. By the time they'd woken up, Jake felt more exhausted than before they'd gone to sleep. Helping Marilyn to get ready, Jake had paused just before they left, pressing a firm kiss to her lips. "I love you, you're going to be okay. I promise." He told her, wrapping his arms around the witch and apparating to St Mungo's.

After checking in - with a little difficulty because they didn't want to speak to Jake, because he wasn't Marilyn's spouse - the couple sat in the waiting area, Jake held on to both her hands, whispering soft words of reassurance because he wasn't sure what else he could do now.

"I'll hold your hand when they put you to sleep, and I'll be by your side when you wake up." Jake assured her softly.

The day, and night, before her operation Marilyn had gone from excited to terrified. ButJake's efforts were vastly comforting, no matter how it seemed. The food (one look had sent her running to the bathroom to be violently ill, Jake holding her hair), the board games (where had those even come from?),the movie (she'd completely spaced out), and the physical love that had brought her closer to 'life', all the gestures she absolutely loved, but they couldn't shake her fears. She'd slept sandwiched between Jagger and Jake, trying hard not to cry. But she slept through the night.

Unfortunately, the hospital had a no dogs policy that meant that Jagger would be waiting in the after-treatment room that her grandparents had organized, her own private room, because she'd be in the hospital for two days and one night for surveillance. But the dog gave her an affectionate kiss on the cheek, nuzzling her carefully as Jake took her to Mungo's.

"I love you, you're going to be okay. I promise."

Mari nodded, biting her lip to keep calm and whispering "I love you, too."

When all was said and done in the hospital Mari was in a hospital gown on a 'bed' and holding Jake's hand tightly.

"I'll hold your hand when they put you to sleep, and I'll be by your side when you wake up."

Nodding the witch softly voiced her fears, "What if they were wrong? Or... What if I don't sound different, what if I sound worse or, Merlin, what if I sound like myself again and you hate it?" She whispered, fear plain in her eyes as she held his hand tightly, but careful not to hurt him.

Once they'd finally moved through to cubicles, Jake had helped Marilyn to change, taking her clothes and folding them neatly in to a bag so as to keep them safe. Helping her in to the bed and holding her hand tightly.

"What if they were wrong? Or... What if I don't sound different, what if I sound worse or, Merlin, what if I sound like myself again and you hate it?"

Jake had simply shook his head at her words, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her lips. "How you sound doesn't matter to me, Marilyn. Gruff or melodic, deep or high, loud or quiet, it makes no difference. I love you, and the only thing that matters is you being happy." He assured her, kissing her fingers gently.

The Healers were entering a moment later, explaining the procedure to both of them. Jake listened intently, checking Marilyn was okay every now and again, and keeping up the gentle kisses to her knuckles in reassurance.

Tears in her eyes, but not falling, Marilyn nodded and smiled, "I love you so much," the witch said affectionately, squeezing his hand again and biting her lip whilst Healers came in to explain that they'd be cutting the ulcers away and magically soothing the then raw vocal chords and that by magical bind to rest them accordingly, they'd block the vocal folds from being used so she wouldn't be able to use them for a week no matter what she tried. They then gave Jake a pamphlet with a list of spells that helped cope with communication that they could try after the operation.

Then it was showtime. Marilyn gave Jake one last kiss and whispered 'I love you' one last time. The last thing she saw was his face.

The operation took three hours, Marilyn was out for the count for about four when she awoke in the private after treatment room, Jagger huddled up as much as possible to fit on her feet. Out of reflex she tried to speak, but of course, her vocal folds didn't even respond, frozen so to say, forcibly relaxed.

Opening her eyes she saw Jake and felt him holding her hand and gave it a squeeze.

With the explanation finished, the Healers moved to put Marilyn to sleep. Pressing one last kiss on Marilyn's forehead when she was fully asleep, Jake moved out of the Healer's way, stepping outside of the room. He'd forgotten to ask how long the operation would take, so the moment the door closed behind him, Jake took to pacing.

It continued through more hours than Jake counted, pacing. Worrying.

But the moment the door opened once more, Jake moved past the Healer who was telling him all had gone fine, that she'd be awake in an hour or so. In honesty, he was surprised to see no evidence of the operation, but glad. His hand moved instantly to Marilyn's, moving with the transfer to the private wing. Jagger had been there, moving in an instant to sit on Marilyn's feet.

Jake had moved to sit on the chair beside her, hand still in hers as he rested his head on the bed beside their hands, closing his eyes as he waited. She'd gotten through the operation - despite him knowing that it wasn't likely to go wrong - and everything was going to be fine. Relief didn't quite explain how the young man felt in that moment.

He'd been between consciousness when he felt Marilyn squeeze his hand. Opening his eyes, Jake looked up to see Marilyn awake, bringing her hand up to his lips and kissing her knuckles gently. "You did great, I'm so proud of you." Jake whispered, knowing she couldn't reply. "How do you feel? Squeeze my hand if you need a drink? Or... Sorry..." Jake shook his head, he was talking too much, she'd only just woken up, too much too soon.

A small smile graced her features when he kissed her knuckles and it only grew as he spoke until she was silently gazing up at him with the warmest smile imaginable.

"You did great, I'm so proud of you." Jake whispered, knowing she couldn't reply. "How do you feel? Squeeze my hand if you need a drink? Or... Sorry..."

A silent laugh bubbled up, only recognizable by the motion of her lips and head. With her other hand she pointed to the pamphlet beside him with the different spells, when given it she looked through it before choosing one that would cause the words she thought about to say appear above her head. Shepointed at the spell and handed it to him, before pointing from his wand to herself for him to cast it on her as she was too woozy still to perform magic.

The first words that came were,"I love you." and they appeared about seven times in concession. Then "How does my throat look?", "Thank you," and a "Water would be nice, please."

Soon a healer entered, tellingthem that it had been a success, no complications, but that they'd give her some pain potions because the folds would be sore. Then the healer left saying that she'd be allowed visitors in the evening but only three at a time max.

Once the healer was gone the first thing that appeared above Marilyn's head was, "Please don't leave."

Jake could see she was laughing at him, and a light pink colour touched his cheeks momentarily. He was just much too happy to see her awake and looking okay that he'd forgotten everything in a moment in his happiness. But, Jake knew Marilyn well enough to know she wouldn't be angry with him or the brief slip up.

Retrieving the leaflet as she asked him to, Jake held it out to her, waiting for her to choose which one before he took it back. The one she'd chosen seemed nicer, and after she pointed to herself, Jake nodded, taking out his wand and casting the spell on her. It was only a brief moment before the three words appeared above her head and Jake smiled fondly at Marilyn, holding up his hand and casting a silencing charm on himself and then the same spell as he'd cast on Marilyn.

"So that it's fair." Came the words above his head, hoping this would help, he didn't want Marilyn to get frustrated with the whole ordeal, so he would join her. "Your throat looks no different, so perfect, as always." Jake assured her, smiling and moving to get her a glass of water. "Can you lean up, then I'll adjust your pillows so you can drink." Jake added, knowing she'd spill it in her current position.

"Please don't leave."

"Never." Jake assured her, leaning up and kissing her cheek. "You mean the world to me, I'm not going anywhere."

Seeing him cast a silencing charm on himself Mari lifted a hand to her mouth in surprise, her expression turning soft and fond. Unbeknowest to her the words 'God, you're brilliant' were floating above her head. The witch sat up in the bed, checking that she wasn't attatched to anything and that she wouldn't disturb Jagger, who had already adjusted himself. She took a few sips of water before giving him the glass again with a 'thank you'.

"Never." Jake assured her, leaning up and kissing her cheek. "You mean the world to me, I'm not going anywhere."

Mari felt her cheeks heat up and she reached out to pull him back for a gentle, but proper, kiss. Which was when the Healer came in to give her a pain potion that tasted, as the words appeared above her head, like Merlins balls. Scooting back to her laying position she held his hand and told him that she was going to sleep, which she did for a few hours, her face towards him and, thanks to him, her hair behind her ear.

When the healer next came in the couple was sat cross cross on the bed, silently conversing, to announce that there were visitors that he'd be letting in two at a time if that was okay. Marilyn nodded and squeezed Jake's hand.

The first were her grandparents the Caldwells, who arrived with Tipsy, who was so small she was exempt from the two-at-a-time-rule. Tipsy gave Marilyn a wrinkly kiss on the cheek and shook Jake's finger. The three were delighted when they saw Jake had joined Mari in her silence and told them that since Marilyn had been placed in a private ward Tipsy was allowed to help out in ways of making the food for Jake and Marilyn whilst she was there. The food would be soup mostly, but thanks to Tipsy it would be a soup that didnt taste like Hospital.

They didn't stay long, knowing she had other visitors. Felipé had sent his Patronus, as he was currently working on a larger project and couldn't leave, but he wanted to check up on her just the same, and Jamie stopped by as well, telling her that Cass wished her well but would have to come around tomorrow as she was a Healer herself and couldn't leave her patients.

The words of him supposedly being brilliant brought a smile to Jake's lips, but he didn't respond to them. Hoping the fact he denied it quite profusely in his head was not on show, because that really didn't matter right now

Helping Marilyn with the water and then with the pain potion she'd been given, Jake helped her back down to the pillow, pulling the sheet up to keep her warm despite it being the early part of summer. Jake knew he worried too much but he just wanted her to be comfortable. With the information that she was going to sleep, Jake once again told her he'd be right here and settled down with his head on the bed, dozing lightly because he was exhausted.

They were left for a couple of hours, before a Healer came in to announce Marilyn had some visitors, first were Evan, Gwen and Tipsy. Jake let out a silent chuckle as the house-elf shook his finger, saying hi to Marilyn's grandparents in the same manner Marilyn did. The explanation that Tipsy would be making them food had made Jake thank the Caldwell's again and again, not realising until now that he was, in fact, starving.

Jake had just finished his own food when Jamie came in, giving the older man a small smile and just staying quiet because, well, this was Marilyn's thing, not his. When they were left alone, Jake helped Marilyn to sit up again, giving her a bowl of soup and a spoon so she could eat, because she must have been hungry. Everything seemed to be okay, so far Marilyn didn't seem to be in any discomfort, or she wasn't showing it anyway.

"Do you need anything else?" Jake had asked in their silent exchange, ready to get her anything she needed if she asked.

Louis had given Marilyn and Jake the week off for her operation. Neither one of them needed the stress of juggling work in the week. He hadn't told Jake that until the Friday before the operation and the look on the young man's face had been warming as he thanked him profusely before hurrying off to tell Marilyn. Louis had felt much more sure of the boy's feelings in that moment, but still kept his guard up.

The morning of her operation, Louis had gone in to work, they needed him, and despite not getting much done due to some problem in the Hit Squad department, it had been enough to take his mind off of what was happening. His secretary had been given the task of Flooing St Mungo's every hour to see if Marilyn was awake yet. It was four in the afternoon when she'd found him, telling him that Marilyn was awake.

He'd apparated straight over with this information, heading straight to her private room as he'd been indicated to. He'd waited for her uncle to leave before slipping in to the room, a small bunch of Marigolds in hand.

"Do you need anything else?"

"A moment alone, please Mr Newbury." Louis spoke, watching as Jake jumped at the sound of his voice, and then the flurry of panic that appeared above his head. The reluctance came in the younger boy's eyes, as he leant over Marilyn, pressing a soft kiss to her lips as the words said he would only be outside. "Thank you." Louis managed as the boy passed, waiting until the door had closed before moving to Marilyn's bed side. The flowers moved to the vase on the bedside without him even moving.

"How are you feeling?" Louis asked, taking her in and giving her a small smile. "Adelisa sends her love, but we're hosting a charity gala this evening in France so she couldn't get away. I wasn't going to leave England without coming to see you though." He explained. "They did a good job, no cuts or scars." He added, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Finishing her soup Marilyn smiled at Jake and Tipsy, setting her bowl aside. The soup had helped as her throat was a little sore, but she knew it was only a small price to pay.

"Do you need anything else?"

She shook her head but looked up at the sudden voice, smiling at her visitor before she saw the row of nervous expressions above Jakes head and silently giggled.

"A moment alone, please Mr Newbury."

Marilyn kisssed Jake back and nodded, squeezing his hand as he went before turning her attention to the man sat on the edge of the bed. 'Louis! Thank you for the flowers, and for coming.' the words floated above her head.

"How are you feeling? Adelisa sends her love, but we're hosting a charity gala this evening in France so she couldn't get away. I wasn't going to leave England without coming to see you though." He explained. "They did a good job, no cuts or scars."

'I feel sore, but alright. Thank her for me and send her my love as well,' Mari reached out to take his hand, a small silent chuckle shaping her lips, 'One scar more or less doesn't make a difference, but I'm glad it healed well. Don't worry about me. How are you?'

'Louis! Thank you for the flowers, and for coming.'

"You're most welcome." Louis replied as she took his hand, giving it a small squeeze. Hospitals were not his favourite place after the years of seeing Dominic in one, but this was different, she was going to get better. Her comment on one more of less scar brought a smile to Louis' features despite himself. She was a fighter.

"I'm fine, really." Louis told her softly. "The office isn't functioning without you, of course, but I only had to use one Stinging Jinx on Mr Reed this morning before the office was back to fully functioning." He told her, trying not to look so satisfied with his work.

Motioning to the door, Louis asked his next question. "He plans on staying silent with you? For a whole week?" He asked, genuinely impressed if that was the case, but not quite sure anyone had the willpower to do that.

"I'm fine, really." Louis told her softly. "The office isn't functioning without you, of course, but I only had to use one Stinging Jinx on Mr Reed this morning before the office was back to fully functioning."

Silent laughter shook the witch's shoulders, "Reed is a twit," She shook her head, "I heard him telling people I was so scary I met a hippogriff once and it bowed to me. Don't think I'd laughed so hard in ages." Appeared above her head.

"He plans on staying silent with you? For a whole week?"

"Looks like it," She smiled, "Cast a silencing charm on himself so he wouldn't accidentally speak. He's so sweet. He said it was only fair to do it, since I can't speak." Mari felt her cheeks warm up and tthe 'i's in her writing turned to be dotted with little hearts.

"I heard him telling people I was so scary I met a hippogriff once and it bowed to me. Don't think I'd laughed so hard in ages."

Louis let out a soft laugh, shaking his head at the thought. "That, I would love to see." He mused softly. Reed was an idiot, everyone knew that, but until Louis could find due cause to get rid of him, he would have to stay.

"Cast a silencing charm on himself so he wouldn't accidentally speak. He's so sweet. He said it was only fair to do it, since I can't speak."

Louis smiled warmly at that, nodding his appreciation at the idea. "He's a good man." He agreed softly. They continued to talk for another twenty minutes before Louis leant up and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. "I have to go, but you're doing great. I'll drop by again soon." He told her with a small smile, leaving the room and telling Jake he could go back in before heading back off to France.
