Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 4 and 5) Empty
PostSubject: Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 4 and 5)   Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 4 and 5) EmptySun Nov 09, 2014 1:30 am

Damien had decided that the best way to get over his situation was by immersing himself in work, which is why, after further discovering that Salem was also in need of a Herbology Professor, he jumped at the opportunity. His first lesson was also to be the last for the school semester, and Damien had no idea what he was supposed to be doing. There had not been many notes about what the previous Professor had covered, and he decided it was best to start with the bare basics. The Greenhouses were beautifully set up - although not as full of plants as he wished, and he soon settled right in. After getting the permission from Teagan, he transferred a whole range of species from his own private Greenhouse in Ireland over to Salem, intending to use them to teach with.

Behind him were large tables, each having a single Bubotuber. The tables were individually sectioned off by a length of string that left an empty space in which it sat. Glancing down at his watch, he noted that his last batch of students were due to arrive any time soon. Students arriving at the Greenhouse would be directed behind it, to the area he was now in; he saw no point in teaching Herbology in a classroom setting, much preferring to be outdoors. The Greenhouses he used to store plants, not much else. Thankfully, the weather had been rather accommodating, with no rain having wet the grassy area he was standing on. Leaning against the wall of the Greenhouse, he waited for the students to arrive.

Jimmy ran down to Herbology class. He didn't really know how he'd do with Herbology. Jimmy knew that he was really good with animals. He's never really worked with plants before. Jimmy found the Professor. "Hello sir." Jimmy said and looked around. He wondered when they would get started.

Herbology seemed interesting. He hadn't taken the class for quite some time, so he decided that it might be interesting. He walked with leisure down the the Greenhouses, and upon seeing the note on the door, he shifted his book bag on his shoulder and walked at the same pace, around the back, where he saw just one other student there. "Morning Professor," he greeted with a nod of his head "Name's Callum Hunt," he said.

Azalea's departure had affected Janique more than she dared to admit - to anyone, including herself - because she had been the first (and only) person to ever show her compassion without asking for anything in return. Even her own mother didn't care, not that Jani really minded; she much preferred taking care of herself rather than have the fool of a woman try to act like she cared.

Still, she acted like it was no big deal, and it honestly wasn't. She was used to people leaving, and the Professor had not really been someone close, so it wasn't painful. When the news of a new Herbology Professor came by, she rolled her eyes, but decided to attend anyway, just for the sake of it.

Going down to the Greenhouses, she sighed at the note of an outdoor lesson, hoping that it would not be made into a habit. However, taking one look at the oddball of a man that was supposed to be teaching them, she figured that he was the kind to think teaching outside would be more 'conductive'. Sending him but a mere nod, Janique instead focused on the horrible looking plants nearby, knowing in her heart they were supposed to be doing something with them, but sincerely hoping that whatever it was did not involve touching them.

The appearance of her boyfriend made her smile and she turned to greet him properly, with a quick hug. "Hey Call," she muttered. "What do you think we'll be doing with those things?" she asked, motioning secretly to the plants.

There were very few students, for which he was glad. Small crowds were always better than large ones any day. Not saying anything much other than repeating back their greetings of 'hello' or with a nod, he checked his watch every so often. Waiting for a few more minutes, no new people came round the corner and so, straightening up, he cleared his throat once. "Good morning," he started. "My name is Damien Elson-Robin Peat. You may call me whatever you want; I have no qualms with names." He offered them an attempt at a smile.

"I have already seen the student list given to me, but I'd rather hear you tell me your own names, as some of you have already done, so I know what to call you," he continued, waiting for someone to begin.

Once everyone had done so, he nodded to himself, slightly more comfortable now that the faces had names. Before speaking, he again cleared his throat, simultaneously motioning to the plants nearby. "Onto the lesson, then! You should recognize those as Bubotubers - I am sure you have either studied them before or read about them in your textbook. Now, what can you tell me about those plants? One answer each; give the others a chance to speak as well."

"Hey Call," she muttered. "What do you think we'll be doing with those things?"

He grinned and returned the hug as quick as she had. "Jani," he murmured, turning back to the front, "I expect something along the lines of extracting the pus or something," he said quietly.

"Now, what can you tell me about those plants? One answer each; give the others a chance to speak as well."

He thought back to what he had learned of the plants from books he'd skimmed through as his 'study'. "Well, when diluted, like in a cream or something, it's used to cure acne." he answered, leaving information for others to add "I'm Callum, by the way," he remembered the man asked for students to introduce themselves as they answered.

"Now, what can you tell me about those plants? One answer each; give the others a chance to speak as well."

Jimmy thought back to when he was studying earlier. "Uh, when the bubotuber pus is undiluted it can effect unprotected skin in unintended ways." Jimmy said and smiled nervously. Jimmy hoped he didn't mix up anything. "I'm Jimmy." He added on. Jimmy had almost forgot to say his name. He put his hands in his pockets and rocked back and forth on his feet and waited to see if he was right.

"I expect something along the lines of extracting the pus or something,"

"Urg," she whispered back, making a face and winking at him. "That sound horrible... What do you think of the Professor? Is he weird or what?" All this she said as softly as possible, so as not to be overheard by anyone.

A few more moments passed and then class started, and immediately Janique took a dislike to the man. While he was indeed fairly good looking, he was so awkward she wouldn't go near him with a ten-foot pole, let alone look up to him. She let Callum answer and smiled to herself. Acne, or pimples, were something she never had a problem with. Apparently, her almost flawless skin was thanks to her great-great-great (how many 'greats', she did not really know) grandma - a veela.

In all honesty, she didn't really know anything about the plant, but bullshit was something she was always talented in and, glancing over at the plant again, said, "You can extract the pus from it, by.." she hesitated, stealing another look at the horrible thing, which was covered in what looked like oversized pimples. That's it! she thought, quickly finishing her sentence with, "..by squeezing it. Oh, and my name is Janique." Throughout, her voice displayed her boredom, and she didn't bother forcing any other tone into it; she was bored, and she saw no point in hiding it.

The hugging and whispering between two of his students gave him quite a shock, but he didn't say anything about it, unsure if it was allowed by school regulations or not. Awkwardly trying not to look in their direction, he was somewhat glad when the three students gave answers to his question. Bringing himself back to the world of plants, he soon forgot about his surroundings as he lead them over to one of the plants, with a, "You're all correct. Five points to each of your respective houses."

Crossing over the rope, he stopped the three students on the other side and motioned to the plant behind him. "As Callum has already pointed out, the pus of the Bubotuber can be used to cure ache, and, as Jimmy said, it cannot be used in a concentrated manner. When pure Bubotuber pus comes into contact, even in minute traces, with the bare skin, it can have disastrous effects; that is to say, it forms boils on the surface of the skin, much like those that appear on the plant. That is why, today, you will be wearing gloves, and at no time are they to be removed unless you have my say so."

He pointed out three plants of identical size nearest to them. "The gloves can be found on the table next to the plant, along with the bottles you will be using. One plant per person, please, and take extreme care not to damage either yourself or the Bubotuber. As Janique has mentioned, the most common way of removing the pus is by squeezing the boils on the surface of the plant," he paused, wondering if he should have said it was the 'only' way instead - he, of course, had his own methods, but they were vastly different and, while more efficient, was also more likely to cause contact with the undiluted pus. Deciding it was too late, he continued, "That is the method you will be using, and please do not try to do it any other way. I do not wish for our first lesson together to end with a trip to the hospital wing. If you have any doubts or questions, ask me before you begin and when you are finished, let me know. Again, do not remove your gloves until I tell you to, and please refrain from using magic directly on the specimens or you may damage it."

OOC: Points will be given according to realism of post, not how successful your character is. Short, non-descriptive posts will therefore also receive less points. Have fun!
