Homework One; Amino Acids

Amino acids are used in every cell in the body to create proteins, which are essential for the body to not only survive but carry out every day bodily functions. All organisms utilise amino acids, whether this is for use in the muscles for growth and repair, or for structures found in the cell membrane.

Amino acids have a two-carbon bond. One of these carbons is from a group called the carboxyl group, containing one carbon and two oxygen atoms. This specific carboxyl group has a negative charge as it has lost it's hydrogen atoms, resultantly forming a conjugate base. The second carbon is connected to the amino group, meaning there is an NH2 group bonded to the carbon atom.

Over fifty different amino acids have been discovered, however only twenty are used to make proteins, and of those twenty, only nine have been deemed essential. The adult body is capable of synthesising the other eleven. Thousands of combinations can be made to produce the chains, or proteins, that are used in the body.

In my line of work, amino acids can be used in many ways. One of these is a new breakthrough that has been said to have emerged in the last few years. It is natural, safe and uses amino acids to help aid the recovery process from mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety, something of particular interest because they may help to completely remove the need for antidepressant drugs which haven't always proved to be effective.
