| The witch examined the shrub critically, wondering if this would be the right lesson for her upperclassmen first thing into a new term.
The shrub looked ordinary enough, to the point where it had nothing remarkable about it at all save the fact that it took place of prime on the only worktable situated in the middle of the greenhouse. The plant was in plain view of anyone who would enter the glass building.
As would be the carcass of the dead mammal lying beneath the shrub.
Azalea really hoped her students weren't too squeamish upon the sight of the bloody carcass lying partially underneath the shrub.
Though personally, the witch thought that the idea of a dead animal would disturb them less compared to the idea that the flesh of the animal was slowly disappearing into the shrub.
"Oh well, we'll see," she whispered as she took her usual place on her own desk, ankles crossed in front of her as she waited for her students.

| Mary was well rested and ready for the new school year. She was particularly excited for this year; there was her training, being Head Girl and the classes were rumoured to be more exciting and more difficult than before. She wanted to take all classes again and so she did, pushing her limits as far as they would go.
The witch walked in the greenhouse, wearing her Head Girl badge proudly. Her smile was wiped off her face as soon as she walked in and was replaced by a shocked and disgusted expression. There was an actual bloody carcass in the middle of the room and... was it being consumed by the plant above it?
"Well, this isn't gross at all..." she mused and waved to the Herbology Professor. "Morning, Azalea!"

| Charlie was prepared for this year, this was her last year at Salem and she wanted it to be amazingly special and she was going to succeed at doing just that. The red headed girl walked into the Herbology classroom and saw only Azalea and Mary there. "Hey Aza and Mary" Charlie greeted to them. She looked at what she thought would be their lesson and tried not to look a little disgusted at that. | |

| The ex-Lugarmago student walked into the Herbology classroom too see two other students there. Diem was excited to be back and ready for action. Kira was also going to be teaching for Care of Magical Creatures and of course Diem was going to show up for that class, she deserved to be there. "Hello all" she greeted when she got there. The brunette looked at the classroom and thought that this was going to be an awesome lesson. | |

| Michelle was quite interested about this class, so she decided to check it out. She soon walked into the greenhouse. She saw here few students, two of them she have seen around her common room, so they are from Wormwood and the one girl she had no idea who she was or her house. "Hello everyone," she said with smile. | |

| Apollo remembered last year and also remembered that in some classes he was the only male. He didn't mind it because well he was surrounded by woman but then again that always had it consequences. The Nightshade walked into Herbology and saw that he was in fact the only male in the room. "Hello ladies" he greeted to them. | |

| The moment Jackson had woken up that morning, he wished someone would concuss him with a beater's bat. At least then he would have a legitimate excuse to stay in and sleep. The boy could do all the soul searching he wanted in the dead of the night or in the afternoon after a nice measure of scotch but right now, no resolution seemed as powerful as the urge to stay in bed and nurse the bloody hangover.
Well, there was one urge. And though scotch so early in the morning wasn't healthy, a boy had to muster up the will to get out of bed. It was after two generous sips and a half shower later that the Nightshade found himself trudging into the greenhouse, only to realize that for the first time in his entire life, he was not late to class.
Just freaking perfect, his rep was now officially at stake.
"G'Morrowning," he murmured to the class in general before taking his place at the very back. The boy had no energy to stand amidst prissy Miss Mary and all the other excited people waiting to learn.
Until he saw the carcass being consumed by the shrub in the middle.
"Cool!" Jackson breathed, forgetting his indifference for a moment.

| When enough students had arrived, Azalea decided to start. The shock of what they were seeing would have lessened by now and any newcomer would just have to keep up.
"Yes guys, not the most cheerful thing to see after breakfast," the witch admitted sheepishly as she looked around at all the upperclassmen.
"However, I can assure you that this particular sample, is highly overgrown. They usually come in a smaller variety and are grown mainly as pest control, to keep rodents and other tiny creatures away from a certain site."
Looking at each of them in turn, the witch continued. "So, can anyone hazard a guess as to what this plant is?"

| Mary grinned at everyone coming in the greenhouse, excited for the lesson despite its gross subject. She figured Azalea knew what she was doing and she trusted her friend. It was incredibly disgusting, though and she hoped she wouldn't have to touch it.
She listened to the Herbology Professor and wondered, not for the first time, what she had missed out on by growing up with Muggles. There seemed to be so many things, like live gnomes and unicorns and well, magic. Unlike those things, she was glad she didn't see this when she was little, she wasn't sure whether she'd ever recover.
The witch lifted her hand. Even though she didn't know what the plant was, she figured she could guess. "It looks like the plant is ... absorbing the carcass, so I suppose the carcass has nutritions that the plant needs. Nutritions it can't get from the earth, so... does the plant grow the carcass because it needs it to survive? Or does the plant grow on dead animals...? Or is it one of those chicken or the egg questions?" Mary then realized she was saying all of this out loud and the witch blushed and shushed.

| "So, can anyone hazard a guess as to what this plant is?"
There was always one in every class, Jackson mused as goody goody Miss Mary spoke up. What was it about Wormwoods that they wanted to try even when they didn't know, and looked silly in the process of trying.
Trying, he supposed. That Was the key word. Jackson had given up trying a long time ago. At least until those stupid pink letters had arrived with notions of making Merida proud.
The boy really hated is life some days.
"They're one of those self feeding dohickeys," he volunteered because listening to Miss Mary was as painful as it was watching her flounder. "They grow where lots of dead things are buried."

| Henley knew she was running late and could really careless. She hated school and having to attend classes was a pain in her ass, it annoyed her so much and she couldn't wait until she graduated because then if she wanted, she'd burn this school to the god damn ground like the Black Widows did Lugarmago. Henley also hated Herbology and yet here she was outside the door to the classroom. Henley walked in and looked at what was to be learned and reluctantly took a seat. | |

| "Well done Mary, Jax, take five points each," Azalea praised, tucking a stray strand of hair behind an ear as she turned to address her class once more.
"As has been said, this plant grows in areas where the soil is rich in what we call decay matter," she clarified, noting Henley walking in late. The witch didn't call her out. Lateness was never a problem in Herbology and Azalea appreciated the students showing up as opposed to not attending at all.
"It is a very independent plant in that it doesn't need to be fed. It will usually capture prey and slowly feed off it. This serves two purposes, one is to feed of course, another is to fertilize itself as we all know decay matter makes for good fertilizer."
The witch waited for all thsoe taking notes to catch up.
"This plant usually preys on small mammals, rats, the occasional baby kneazel and even a niffler that's ventured too far. However, its most common use is to degnome gardens."
Gesturing to the specimen in the class, she continued "But this one is bigger. It's currently feeding on the remains of a calf. So can anyone imagine why someone would want to grow these plants to such a size when they could be dangerous?"

| Apollo listened as a younger boy from his house got the correct answer along with Mary. When Azalea explained the plant more, Apollo really wondered why people grew the plants to a big size when everyone knows it can be dangerous. When Azalea asked about why people do this, Apollo only had one answer and he raised his hand to answer. "People could grow it large because it could be used as a great weapon" Apollo answered and lowered his hand. | |

"Very good Apollo, take five points," Azalea allowed to the oldest Oxton sibling. He, not unlike his sister, was a bright student. It pleased Azalea to see her Nightshades working hard and Apollo was definitely a part of that.
"I call it the human condition," she joked as she made her way to the bush. "Turning everything they see into weapons of destruction. Sadly, that's what wizard kind has come to. But this is not a philosophy class," she finished with a laugh.
Bending down so that she was on her knees beside the plant, Azalea picked a small shovel. "Today we're going to try and uproot this plant because if you find it anywhere near you, your best bet is going to be to distract it with food and then uproot it. You cannot burn it off, you need it to remove its roots from your grounds," she explained, digging a shovel into the clod of earth and making a crack.
"There are spare shovels on the workstations over there, also some picks and any other material you want to use. Today we'll all be trying to end this guy's lease on our greenhouse," she explained, gesturing for the students to join her.

| Henley wanted to hit this Apollo kid upside the head, every time she happened to be in a class with him, he was always beating her to the answers and it annoyed her a lot. When Azalea said how they had to uproot the ugly plant, Henley couldn't help but scoff and roll her eyes. She walked over and grabbed a shovel before going towards the plant. The thing looked ugly and stupid. Henley began to do what Azalea asked her to do. | |

| Apollo listened as he got the correct answer and he was glad that Nightshade had gained some points. He would never admit it but he was actually really excited he got Student of the Year. Of course his parents were proud of him and Aphrodite, they wondered when Ares was going to win, but him getting Student of the Year was in possible, Ares barely stayed awake in classes. Apollo grabbed a shovel and began to help out. | |

| Mary listened to her classmates and Azalea talking and she took notes. She had to get an 'O' in her NEWTs that year and she was determined to get them. Yes, she'd have to work hard, on top of everything else she had set for herself her final year, but she wanted to go through with everything. And, working hard wasn't really any news for any respectable Wormwood.
She walked over to where the tools were and picked out a shovel and a pick, then made her way over to Henley and Apollo. The witch smiled at them and started shoveling dirt, trying her best to ignore the bloody carcass.

| Charlie could tell that the Nightshade girl didn't want to be bothered by any of this, Charlie followed Mary towards the tools and grabbed a shovel. Charlie inspected it before she went over to the plant and followed the lead of the others. The red head tried her hardest to ignore the plant as it was something really dangerous. This was going to be difficult but she knew that Azalea would never let anything fully happen to her students. | |

| Diem watched as four people got up to help Azalea. The Nightshade Prefect got up and walked over towards the shovels and picked one up. She then proceeded to make her way over towards the others and she began to help the others. Diem didn't want to get hurt by the plant but this is what was to be assigned so Diem just made sure to be extra careful with the plant. Diem was too young to die. | |

| It kinda sucked that they had to uproot the coolest thing Jackson was going to see the entire week but that was the joy of school, where you learned to make awesome things into boring ones. Seeing Diem move to the plant, a small smirk crept over Jackson's features as he picked up a small trowel from the selection and moved in beside the prefect.
"You seem entirely too happy at the idea of killing this innocent little thing," he mused, stepping down on one knee beside her to dig the trowel into the earth.
"Are all pretty girls as cruel as you?" he joked lightly.

| Diem was taking away from the task at hand when she heard Jax come up beside her. Jax was someone who she found herself drawn to in a way and she liked hanging out with him, he was amazing company. "Oh be quiet Jax, you're doing the exact same thing are you not?" Diem smirked at him. He couldn't say she was destroying the plant because he was as well. When he asked if all the pretty girls were as cruel as she was.
"Nope, I'm one of a kind" she sent him a wink and went back to the task at hand.

| Time flew as the students worked together to uproot the plant, working carefully in groups with Azalea. While some showed a little squirming around the carcass of the mammal the plant was gently feeding on, others approached it with no hesitation and set to work digging. It took nearly an hour for Azalea to choreograph the excavation of the shrub but finally, the last root had been lifted out of the ground, leaving the plant quite helpless and very much dead.
"Good job ladies and gentlemen," the witch congratulated the lot, getting up off her knees and dusting off her jeans, letting the earth fall back to the ground.
"Now that we've made the world a slightly safer place, you're free to go. As a reward for so much hands on work, no homework this week," she added with a grin.
"I'll see you guys next week," were her parting words as she waved at the students leaving the greenhouse.
