| Subject: The Professor's Handbook (must read for all professors) Fri Apr 26, 2013 3:41 pm | |
| The Professor's Handbook which covers almost everything you need to know about being a teacher at any of the three magical schools at HAF So you're interested in applying for a Professorship at one of our schools? Great. But be warned that the position does come with responsibilities. What responsibilities, you ask. Well, for one thing you have to fill a certain criteria which - at the moment - consists of the following:
- Your RP character must be 22 years or older (private message an admin for a reconsideration/exception.)
- Your RP character must have had either tertiary education, practical experience or a previous teaching position in the subject you wish to teach.
- Your RP character must have sufficient background knowledge of other academic subjects. Providing us with the characters NEWTs sheet would be very helpful that way.
Classes
Since every RP year lasts four RL months at HAF, the staff has designed the syllabus so that each year has three classes per subject, divided neatly in three months with one month to a class (with the extra weeks for runover time). Meaning you need to run three classes in one RP year for for each student year. So at its maximum, if you are teaching all seven years, that's 7 x 3 classes in four months.
Wut? 21 Classes, for real, I hear you say. Well, yes, if you really want to do it that way. But there is an easier way. Another option we give you is to combine classes. How does this work? You can easily combine two years in one class. the current combinations works like this. You can combine, first, second and third years in a single class, fourth and fifth years in a class and sixth and seventh years in a class. That means you are only running three classes instead of seven a month which makes nine classes in four months. A lot easier to manage no?
Acceptations can be granted if a teacher feels that less than ten students will be attending his or her class in which case, all years can be combined into a single class session.
So when do these classes start? Easy, classes should be up by the beginning of each months (a few days give or take,we won't mind - this is where the run time comes into play) and completed by the end of the month. However, if you happen to finish early, please do not close the class as some students might want to come back and post in it. As of the current student rules, each student has to at least complete one subject (attend all three classes in it) to graduate to next year so please make sure to give your students a chance to post right up til the very end of the IC year.
Points
So, I'm a professor so I can give points right? Yes you can. But to make the system more organised, we've decided on the number of points you are allowed to give out, just to make sure there is no misuse of power. A professor is allowed to award a student a total of 100 points over the duration of the school year. Whether you do this by doling out 30 points equally every lesson and award the 10 remaining at your own discretion or just set a very hard exam for the last class which could earn students a hundred points is up to you. Basically, these are just the numbers you get to work with. How about docking points, yes, you can do that too but again, to prevent misuse of this system, you can dock only up to 20 points from each student. How you do it is up to you.
All awarding and deducting of points must be noted in the House Points thread allotted for your specific schools. The students name, reasons for points being awarded or taken away and date (IRL) must be listed clearly.
Other Responsibilities
A the end of the year, you will be required to provide the staff (Azalea Harrington in this case) with a list of all the students that attended each of your classes as well as how many points they earned/lost over the RP year so we can verify which ones are qualified to move on to the next year. Everything else is pretty much your own show.
Now that you know what you're about to sign up for, think carefully if you're up to the task. If you believe you are, we would be happy to welcome you to the professors usergroup. If you have any more questions regarding your job as a teacher, feel free to PM Azalea Harrington with them. She will get back to you in a tick!
