Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7) Empty
PostSubject: Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7)   Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7) EmptySun Nov 09, 2014 1:05 am

His first lesson was also to be the last for the school semester, and Damien had no idea what he was supposed to be doing. There had not been many notes about what the previous Professor had covered, and he decided it was best to start with the bare basics. The Greenhouses were beautifully set up - although not as full of plants as he wished, and he soon settled right in. After getting the permission from Mycroft, he transferred a whole range of species from his own private Greenhouse in Ireland over to Hogwarts, intending to use them to teach with.

Behind him were large tables, each having a single Snargaluff plant. The tables were individually sectioned off by a length of string that left an empty space in which it sat. Glancing down at his watch, he noted that his first batch of students were due to arrive any time soon, the older ones, and he hoped that they would enjoy the lesson he had planned. Students arriving at the Greenhouse would be directed behind it, to the area he was now in; he saw no point in teaching Herbology in a classroom setting, much preferring to be outdoors. The Greenhouses he used to store plants, not much else. Thankfully, the weather had been rather accommodating, with no rain having wet the grassy area he was standing on. Leaning against the wall of the Greenhouse, he waited for the students to arrive.

PostSubject: Re: Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7)   Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7) EmptySun Nov 09, 2014 2:55 am

It seemed like a shame that the first lesson of Herbology since Azalea left school would be her last. Everything was becoming very real now, and the idea that school was ending was coming soon. It was frightening to realize this, but she used classes as a distraction, that everything was coming way too close to ending and she'd soon be out of the castle. Pushing the doors of the greenhouse she entered the door and studied the man before her. He was tall, and young, around the age of her brother and she didn't know what to expect from him.

Tess was in her own mind when she was interrupted, and nodded following Josh, not really paying the boy any attention. Merlin, as if she had enough time to get herself together for this. So she stood there waiting for class to start, not too comfortable with giving a greeting, as was out of her nature. Instead she gave him a small smile and lowered her head waiting for others to arrive.

Herbology without Azalea had been... a welcome break for Josh. After the evening where she'd left him in the art gallery, the burning art gallery, Josh had never wanted to see the American witch again. And almost as if someone had known, she'd resigned from the position before the next year had begun.

Since then they'd had lessons which consisted of simply reading from the book. To most it was a tedious time, but Josh preferred reading to get his hands dirty. The announcement of a proper professor taking over the lessons had therefore been something of a shame for Josh. It would be his last lesson in Herbology, and he was quite sure this was going to become something of a dirty lesson in comparison to the rest they'd had this year.

Which did not set the Murray heir up to having a very good expectation for the class as he moved down to the greenhouse, noticing the note, Josh was about to head to the end of the greenhouse when he noted the Head Girl stood inside. Opening the door, Josh called to her. "Holmes, the back of the greenhouse, per the note." He told her, tapping the note on the door and heading off towards the designated area.

There stood a man of little and less significance, if Josh was honest, he was taller than the professor, broader too. Which only made him seem more powerful already. "Professor." Josh acknowledged with a smirk on his lips.

Hearing that they actually had a professor for this term, Gina had decided to bother getting out of bed. Which, meant she was interested. In all honesty, the only two subjects Gina excelled in were the two that didn't really need magic, so Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. Care of Magical Creatures didn't interest her very much though, so Herbology was her favourite class.

But only because she actually managed to get a decent grade in it.

Managing her way to the meet place, Gina stayed out of the way of the Slytherin's and waited for instructions on what they were going to do. Seen but not heard, was probably the best way to explain Georgina Vise, in all honesty, and today was going to be no different.

Hearing that a new Herbology Professor had taken up residence in Hogwarts, Brooke was more than excited to attend the class. Rumours had it that the new Professor was a young male - a young good looking male, not that Brooke actually cared. Still, she was curious, and so, briskly walking down to the Greenhouses, she was already smiling when the note on the door told her of the location change. Outdoor lessons were always hands-on, in her mind, which just made her even more excited. Moving to the back of the building as instructed, she felt the slight pang in her stomach when she saw the Slytherin standing there, but quickly pushed it aside.

Moving towards a Hufflepuff she had seen but never talked to, she took in the Professor. With a grin to herself, she noted that the rumours were true, keeping that in mind to report to her friends back in her Common room. "Hello Professor. I'm Brooke," she greeted with a smile.

Rhian walked down to the greenhouses, excited that the weather was taking a turn for the best. With only a slight, warm breeze today, she slipped off her cloak and folded it over her messenger bag as she walked along the grass. Putting her hair up, she enjoyed the spring sun on her face.

Once she reached the usual greenhouse used for when the old professor taught, she noticed a sign. It wasn't unheard of, holding classes in other places than the usual classroom. Especially for Herbology, what with all the wonderful examples of plant life around the grounds and forest.

Walking around to the back of the building, she spotted the small grouping of students, all whom she knew. Seeing Tess amid the group, she went to stand by the Slytherin. The professor was a bit of a shocker. Her old Herbology professor at Salem, years ago, had been a woman. And then there'd been Azalea. Seeing a man in the position was a bit odd, but not unwelcome. She wondered what the class would be like now.

With a small nod, she greeted the man, "Morning, Professor."

Lucy smiled when she saw that Herbology was back at Hogwarts. She always enjoyed the subject, at it was truly useful. She finished her breakfast and then made her way to the Greenhouse, and upon reading the note on the door, followed the instructions and walked around the back of the building to where the class was held. She went to where the other students were "Sir," she nodded at the new teacher politely and gave a friendly smile.

PostSubject: Re: Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7)   Herbology Lesson 3 (Years 6 and 7) EmptyTue Nov 11, 2014 2:55 am

The arrival of the students was both welcoming and alarming; in all honestly, he wasn't sure if he was up to the job. The actually Herbology part was not a problem, no. It was the fact that it would mean direct interaction with people, something he would never be ready for. Still, it was a chance to instil a love of the flora world into the next generation of wizards and witches, and that gave him some hope. Each greeting he received, he acknowledge with a nod and an attempt at a smile.

Mentally keeping track of the number of students as they arrived, he decided to pair them off versus his original idea of having them work in threes. It wouldn't make too much of a difference. Glancing down at his watch, he noted the time and took a step forward, away from the wall.

"Good morning," he said. "My name is Damien Elson-Robin Peat. You may call me any name you please; I am not one to be picky about titles." He waited a few seconds before continuing. "I have already seen the list of students, but I think it best that you introduce yourselves to me. That way I will know what you prefer to be addressed as."

After they had all done so, he gave another awkward smile. "Good. Now that we are on a name-basis, we can proceed." He motioned to the plants near them. "In case you can't tell, those are not pieces of wood, but rather, Snargaluff plants. What can you tell me about them?" A quick moment later, he added, "I don't need a sermon, so keep it short and let others answer, please."

Josh wasn't much in to introductions, get on, get the work done, get gone. Anybody who didn't know who he was... well, quite simply they were not worth his time, or efforts. Hence, the Slytherin didn't comply to the notion of introducing himself.

"In case you can't tell, those are not pieces of wood, but rather, Snargaluff plants. What can you tell me about them?"

Well, that made it less interesting, telling the class the actual thing before them. Snargaluffs were amusing when people didn't step up to them in the right manner. But, Josh didn't bring this up as he spoke without so much as looking at the professor or raising his hand. "The Snargaluff plant is supposed to look like nothing special, but inside the plant lie small pods of a green colour that can be used in potions. Extracting them, however, is not an easy job." Josh provided, not going in to much detail as he'd been asked not to.

Cassidy was just slightly late for Herbology class. What a bad first impression the new Professor would have. She hoped they weren't one to hold grudges, because it would be a really bad start to things. She got to the Herbology Greenhouse, and when seeing the note, followed the instructions to go where class was being held. She quietly approached the group and remained in the back as Josh answered the Professor's question that she had missed.

Raising her hand, she bit her lip as Josh was first to answer and debated whether or not to even talk. But as he had said that there were other people who could also answer she'd give it a shot. Clearing her throat she softly commented,

"As Josh said the plant seemed innocently enough, but while not sentient, it can be aggressive when being collected" she said" by attacking with its thorns" cutting herself off before she could delve deeper into it's aggression.

She never thought how much of a challenge it could be to just keep it short, used to being able to explain her thought and analyze it, but she supposed the methods were different. So she played with her fingers softly, wondering if it was long enough to have some importance, but short enough where there would be no annoyance.

Instead of replying each individual person, he waited till everyone had answered. Or, at least, waited till nobody else answered, and then he nodded. "Very good. Please have five points each to the both of you who answered, which would be a total of ten to Slytherin."

Motioning to the students to follow him, he moved closer to the sectioned off area and ducked under the rope. "Now, as Josh - I believe - has mentioned, these plants contain ingredients much needed for certain potions. And like -" he paused; the other Slytherin had not mentioned her name. "-like his fellow Slytherin said, extracting them is not an easy job. Snargaluffs get violent when someone tries to approach it, as you will see in a moment."

Stepping forward, Dami held his wand loosely in his hand as the Snargaluff came to life, its thorny vines flinging themselves around as Dami neared it, dodging them perfectly. For him, it was easy, having done it many times in the past, and he quickly located the opening in the trunk and, using his wand as a distraction, pulled out the green pod in such a manner that nobody behind him could see; the way he did it was not one that should be attempted by students on their first try. Rather, it was his own method that he developed after years of practice.

Moving back towards the students, he showed them the pod. "This is your goal for today. You will be paired off, and I will be observing each group carefully to ensure that neither plant nor person is harmed. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me; this is not a simple task and any doubts could get someone hurt." He pointed out the other plants around the area. "After receiving your assigned partner or partners, please pick your Snargaluff and begin."
