PostSubject: Potions Lesson 2 (Years 6-7)    Potions Lesson 2 (Years 6-7) EmptyWed Oct 08, 2014 8:32 pm

December came with a very strong winds; the dungeons was colder than usual and he himself was affected by it. Having a warmer coat around himself he knew that by this time the lake would have begun to freeze over at the top.

Mycroft figured that on a winter day why not bring some kind of joy within the classroom. He knew the potion he had in mind was challenging, but it would bring a complexity and unimaginable curiosity to see exactly how well they could try it out.

With a neat writing he wrote clearly on the board Polyjuice Potion and sat down waiting for students to arrive. He knew that a winter day like this many would have cancelled class, but he wasn't the type of man to that.

Glad for some extra layering today, Rhian walked down to Potions. While the castle was always rather cool, the bitter cold of winter was settling into the stone, making it almost unbearable. She'd finished her rounds in record time last night, rushing back to the dorm and the comfort of a fire.

Pushing open the large wooden door, the Gryffindor's eyebrows rose. She was never the first to class. Not that she did it on purpose, she just never made a point of it. A smile crept up her features at seeing Mycroft. With school in full swing, it was rare that she got alone time with him. Once in a while, she'd visit him in his office. But she tried to keep out of his hair for the most part.

"Morning," she greeted with a small wave. She would have said more, but she respected the professional setting that he preferred with his students. She may be his daughter now, but she was still his student. Taking a seat off to the side, she set her things out in preparation for what she knew would be an interesting lesson.

Potions came up on his list next, and Josh was glad that there was a structured lesson coming. None of the classes had a carefully crafted logic to them, but then that was the joy of potions, everything had a method and deviation was left to experimentalists. Winter was setting in to the castle, and Josh had decided it time to pull on his school jumper to keep the bite of the air away, usually it didn't bother him, but with no windows in the potions room, he knew it was going to be very cold.

Opening the door, Josh noted only one other, and in his usual manner, he silently moved to his desk and took a seat without acknowledging the professor or the other student in the room. He pulled out his textbook and then waited, barely raising his eyes to the board for longer than was necessary to read the subject matter from the board. Interesting.

Alyson walked into Potions and saw that there was a fellow Gryffindor there along with a Slytherin. She knew who both of them were and always tried to be polite with them as best she could. Alyson took a seat and knew that you never greet Professor Holmes because he was rarely ever in a mood. The girl just sat at her section waiting for the class to begin.

Potions was an okay class, he was passing it which was a good thing but the Professor wasn't too fond of him, he was most likely sure of it, he could sense it of the sort kind of. The Gryffindor took his normal seat and waited for the class to begin, the class before this wasn't so bad, he had it down but that was something completely different from this.

This time, Lucy was certain not to be late. Last lesson had been rather embarrassing for her, and she was determined not to let herself slip up again. She slipped into the classroom, noting a few others were already there and moved to an empty seat, thankful that class hadn't began yet. She gave a warm smile to Professor Holmes and readied herself for the lesson.

Cassidy wasn't fussed on potions, but took it anyway as her parents wanted her to at least give it a try. She she walked from the Gryffindor common room down to the dungeons, not her favourite part of the castle. She wasn't fond of dark, damp places. She walked into the room and took an empty seat "Hi Professor," she greeted with a small smile as she readied herself to make some Polyjuice potion. Though, she doubted she would do it well.

The Slytherin walked into the Potions classroom taught by the Head Of Slytherin and waited for it to begin, it hadn't started yet and there was barely any students there, well there was a few but usually there was a lot more but not this time. The Slytherin took out the books for the class and waited nonpatiently but tried to.

If Mycroft was honest with himself, he was a bit surprised at the small number of people that actually attended the class. Still, he figured that it was better to work with the smaller number when it came to a complicated potion that would roll over into their last lesson. Clearing his throat, he walked towards the front of the class and figured he could start before they began to blab to one another as they usually did.

"Good afternoon students, as you can see based on the board, we will begin to study the important of the Polyjuice potion and more importantly begin the first part of the potion. You have to understand that this potion will be a project of yours, the more perfected the potion is the stronger it will last. Now, let's start off with a simple questions, someone tell me what the potion exactly does, it's uniqueness, and someone else tell me an ingredient."

OOC: This potion will be a complicated one, and if I see your character goes through the motions with no problem, you will not get the full points. Let's be realistic here please?

Pushing the door open, Tess was surprised to see she was one of the last people to arrive. But then again, being sick, meant that she was already a bit slowed down in her movements. She walked to sit in her usual spot and waited patiently for class to begin. Taking out her quill, and her usual items, she began to plan everything out before he could begin class. It was full today, something rare really. But based on the potion on the board, it was a good thing she showed up.

"..someone tell me what the potion exactly does, it's uniqueness, and someone else tell me an ingredient."

She did something she hadn't done in a while in his class, she raised her hand. Once she was signaled to go, she smiled and began to speak.

"The polyjuice potion is a special concoction that allows the brewer or drinker to take the physical form of a person the brewer wishes to be, with an ID-ing ingredient, such as hair or nails. As you said, the more powerful polyjuice is created by people better brewers."

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 2 (Years 6-7)    Potions Lesson 2 (Years 6-7) EmptySun Oct 19, 2014 3:33 am

Taking note of the potion before Mycroft began, Rhian pulled out her book and turned to the page. She'd learned about the potion a few years ago, in passing, but had never attempted to brew it. She'd heard of different ways it could be useful, of course, but she hadn't ever had the need for it.

She was surprised to see Tess raising her hand before anyone else. With a smile, she watched as her friend answered the first part. It felt like forever since she'd seen the Slytherin actually participate in open discussion in this class, what with the history. Now though, it gave her hope.

After Tess finished, Rhian raised her hand. "It has Lacewing flies and Fluxweed." Looking down at her book, she double checked her information before going on. "The flies take a bit of time to prepare, and the Fluxweed is specific to time of the month. They're probably part of what makes this potion more difficult."

Josh listened to the first two answers carefully, noting how the Gryffindor had decided on two ingredients rather than the one that Professor Holmes had asked for. Slightly annoying, but Josh had an answer anyway. Raising his hand, Josh waited to be called upon before he spoke.

"Another ingredient is the knotgrass. Whilst it's not certain as to why this is being used, there are some theories. One, is that seeing as this plant is used in Knotgrass mead, it's added to make the potion taste better - though I have been told the potion does not taste nice at all. Two, it could be linked to old stories of knotgrass being said to tie things together, in essence symbolic to tying two people together such as the potion does." Josh explained, waiting for further instructions with his arms crossed over his chest.

Mycroft was surprised that Tess was the first one to answer his question; she hadn't done so in a while. Still as he signaled her to go, she gave him the answer that he was looking for and nodded her way. Next came Rhian who gave him two ingredients, which while not what he was asking for, was correct in all ways, lastly Mr. Murray was the one to finish it off. He figured it was enough points given for the lesson and it was time to implement the actual work for the potion.

"Very good. Five points each. Now today we will start the project, since it's in two parts, this lesson will go over our usual time and carry on. If you have any extra curricular activities plan them around the lesson times I have planned. For the first part I have taken the time to collect all your ingredients and prepare them. There are no tricks within this part, everything is exactly what it says. The potion is already hazardous enough that I'd like to avoid having to trick any of you into killing yourselves."

Removing the cover he began to turn them so the titles were clear. Each one was in perfect ordered, measured and making sure no mistakes could be done for. He knew that it was hazard to even suggest it, but he trusted this group to at least attempt it.

"Our potioneering will take place tonight. Make sure to bring a copper cauldron, it will shorten your stay in the classroom. Throughout the week, we will come back at 10pm to work on it. Every Thursday, we will add the four parts.Tonight we will do part one step one, since it's a full moon. And next week part one step two, you get the idea. Whoever you wish to turn into can either be in this classroom, or must have consent to do this potion. Your transformation at the end of the month will be in front of me. Any questions?"

OOC: I will make individual topics for each and every one of you with the schedule.  Note that I will put all the steps in the topic. You will be in the same classroom, but there will be no talking, and it will be your characters, successes, struggles, etc. You will need to make at least three posts. One for each week. Since this class lesson will end soon, keep in mind that it will carry over to the final lesson. That is when, if you've posted in your topics, you will pass this class. Seventh years, it's important to note that you HAVE to have three posts to pass the year in potions and get any points. If you will be away please PM me. If you have any questions feel free to do the same.
