PostSubject: Lesson 1 (All Years) Turning Sand to Glass   Lesson 1 (All Years) Turning Sand to Glass EmptySun Sep 07, 2014 8:09 am

Alexander hadn't had an eventful summer, it had been calm, and quiet, and he got the chance to visit his home country, Scotland, which he always enjoyed immensely. He had planned an interesting practical lesson for the first lesson back, involving turning sand to glass, and he thought the students would find it as interesting as he did. Though, he found every aspect of Alchemy interesting, so naturally he tended to get over-excited about it. He waited at his desk for students to enter.

Thana rocked up to her first alchemy lesson at Salem with a pang of guilt, it had been Lucas's class when she was at Hogwarts. So she expected a high amount of difficulty from it. Quietly walking in and sitting down, not even bothering to let the teacher know she had arrived, she pulled out her Alchemy books, and got ready for the lesson. She also noticed she was the first one there, once she was set up she cleared her throat . Indicating to the teacher that he was no longer alone.

Aphrodite walked into the Alchemy classroom and saw that there was only one other person here and that was her brother's love interest Thana. She was kind of surprised that she was there, the last thing she heard was that Thana was attending Hogwarts. The Belladonna smiled kindly at Thana and sent a wave. "Hello Professor Hamilton and Thana" Aphrodite greeted them both. She waited for the class to begin and she waited to see who else would show up.

Jareth arrived to the Alchemy classroom , probably the only class he should of been good at but instead flunked miserably . " Sup Professor...Aphrodite. Darling sister " he jested, meaning no rudeness not disrespect. He sat down and waited for the class to begin, his thoughts already elsewhere.

Aragorn arrived at the first Alchemy class of the year, with little and no interest in it. Alchemy was for helping people, and not something he wanted. "Professor" he acknowledged, sitting down in the back of the classroom. He noticed that he was the only Nightshade there so far, but it didn't matter. Such trivial things as houses held nothing for him, he could get where he wanted when he wanted.

Thana looked around as her name was said, noticing a Belladonna girl. Apollo's sister she believed, she had only seen her briefly one her visit to Salem before she came permanently. "Hello Aphrodite" she replied, staying where she was. She was more than happy to chat, but wanted to stay focused as well. She hadn't been able to send a message to any of the Oxtons over the holidays, she had been too busy with the family problems. A family that wasn't even technically one she belonged too, but she had needed to be away from everyone for a while as it was.

Apollo wasn't really sure about this class but he was going to attend it anyway, the more classes he took the better. Apollo was glad that when he walked in he saw his sister there but didn't see Ares. After the attack and after his injury, him and Ares had made amends and he was glad that they did, he missed his baby brother. Apollo saw that his somewhat girlfriend Thana and his sister were talking. "Hello Thana, Aphrodite, Professor, and everyone else" he acknowledged the others in the room so he didn't come off as rude. He took a seat next to Thana and waited for the class to begin.

He enjoyed the class the previous year and here he was again going to attend the new class for the year. He prepared himself and walked into the class, he saw a lot of familiar faces and took a seat. He acknowledged that his siblings were there already and was a little stunned they were there that year, he remembered Apollo was skeptical of the class before and now here he was again. Ares just shrugged and waited for the class to begin.

PostSubject: Re: Lesson 1 (All Years) Turning Sand to Glass   Lesson 1 (All Years) Turning Sand to Glass EmptyThu Sep 25, 2014 9:05 am

Alexander watched as all of the students piled into the class, and was pleased with the turnout. He waited as the last girl entered the classroom before beginning the lesson.

"Right, welcome all of you to Alchemy," he said with a smile "Today, for a fun first lesson back, we will be turning sand to glass using Alchemical processes such as extraction, melting and cooling. Those are the three basic steps." he talked quickly, and paced the room as he did so, it was a habit of his "Just something easy to settle you all back into school," he said with a grin, waving his wand to write the steps on the board.

1.Pour sand into cauldron, and using the Ventus jinx, separate the quartz from the other minerals in the sand.
2.Take out the waste minerals with the jinx, and leave the remaining quartz in the cauldron.
3.Pour a medium amount of water in the cauldron and place the lid on the cauldron. Preferably, use a sticking charm.
4. Turn the heat up to extremely high and hot. The water will condense and add pressure to the quartz, increasing the melting speed and malleability.
5. After 15 minutes, release the lid, and refrain from looking into the cauldron as the steam is released. You can then pour the melted quartz into a ceramic mould on the desk.
6. Leave to cool, and you have a simple quartz glass figure.

He stood back and let the class begin.

Thana quietly packed her books away, preparing to get started. She was more than ready to ignore her brother, and was happy that Apollo was sitting next to her. It was an easy enough class at the moment, with the turning sand to glass. She got prepared and used the specified jinx to separate the sand and other minerals, disposing of the unneeded minerals into a small bowl before continuing with her work. Occasionally looking over at Apollo and around to Jareth to make sure he was being sensible.

Apollo watched as Thana began the first three steps of the task at hand, he was glad that the two of them were being as one as they usually were, Apollo looked to his younger siblings to see that they were in fact to doing the same, he decided to focus on his steps. He turned the heat up high and it was extremely hot, the water was going to condense and he added pressure to the quartz and increased the melting speed. After 15 minutes, he released the lid and refrained from looking into the cauldron even though he was tempted to. He poured the melted quartz into a ceramic mould on the desk and left it to cool. He looked at Thana and smirked.

Jareth listened as the teacher spoke, and read the board. It didn't matter though, he wasn't an Alchemist whiz like his brother or...or Thana. He quietly smiled to himself, then threw a paper ball at his adopted sister waiting for her to turn around. Because it was a relaxed class he switched seats, moving closer to her. "THAAAAANNAAA" he said, watching as a Nightshade boy smirked at her.
What do you want? came her reply, Jareth just smiled even wider.
"How would you like to give your brother a hand with doing this?" he asked, I wouldn't was her answer. That only made Jareth smile even more, scooting his chair closer. "Come on Sis, you know you and Lucas are the nerds. I can't help it if you two are the alchemists, now give your big brother a hand." Jareth said, grinning and opening his arms wide.
So far he had only managed to separate the sand, which he had great pleasure telling her.
Jareth, its first year Alchemy. Do it yourself. she said rolling her eyes and going back to her own work.

THAAAAANNAAA"

Turning around after getting hit by a paper ball, Thana saw her nuisance of an annoying brother was calling her. "What do you want?" she asked, already knowing what he wanted.

"How would you like to give your brother a hand with doing this?"
Came his smirking reply, "I wouldn't " was her direct answer as she watched him move closer. Something that not many teachers would allow she was sure.

Come on Sis, you know you and Lucas are the nerds. I can't help it if you two are the alchemists, now give your big brother a hand."

Thana sighed, "Jareth, its first year Alchemy. Do it yourself." she told him, rolling her eyes before turning to look at Apollo, "And they say I'm the adopted one. At least your allowed to slap yours, I got told off for shutting him up in Muggle studies" Thana told Apollo, blushing slightly as he smirked at her. For a moment she let a pang of sadness show on her face, Jareth was right it was in her and Lucas's top four best subjects, being one that they both had loved. Quickly dissipating her sadness, Thana  went back to her glass making, waiting for her quartz to just slightly cool before pouring some extra ingredients into it  expertly colouring the glass with melted  copper and a liquid stain,  waiting for it to set.

Once it had she raised her hand, "Professor I'm done." she said, taking it out of the mould. It came out around the size of her arm, the mould had worked perfectly and the colour she had put through it turned out amazingly well. She hoped the professor wouldn't mind too much that she had slightly deviated from the instructions. Thana looked over at Apollo and raised an eyebrow, an equivalent to a smirk from her. Thana  wanted to see how well he had done in it and what his mould had ended up being.

Aragorn was waiting for his 15 minutes to be up, observing those around him. He saw the interaction between the Nightshade and his interest, he wondered if there was anything there. He knew that the Belladonna boy, Jareth, was just being his normal party self and thought little of it. Aragorn was surprised at how she handled herself, simply ignoring him and going back to her work. Obviously she wanted to pass this year, with interest he also noticed that no matter what she had either long sleeves on or fingerless gloves. It didn't seem practical, especially in physical lessons. He made a mental note to pursue it further, but for now was simply waiting for his glass to form. Which after he put a forming spell on did, revealing two simple swans. They meant nothing to him, but thought that Diem or Janique might like them, looking over he was surprised to see that his interest had made an incredible figurine. It looked like a Pheonix, and the colouring she had put in it was marvellous, obviously she had lots of practice in the subject.

Jareth couldn't help but groan as his 'sister' rejected offering help, he went back to trying to make it himself. Failing miserably, he didn't seal the lid and the glass simply set in the cauldron becoming a black boiling sludge. "Im going to need a new cauldron." he thought to himself, that was two cauldrons in his first week. Not too good, he was glad that he could get more. He would probably annoy Thana enough to buy one or two for him. "Umm sir.....I don't think I did it right." he said to the teacher. It just wasn't fair, Thana had done a brilliant one and he had simply come up with sludge.

Ares looked at what they were supposed to do and began with the assignment. Ares was kind of good at this subject and happened to look at his older brother and saw he was almost done with his sculpture. 'How is it possible that he is better at everything?' Ares asked himself. Ares saw as a Belladonna was asking Thana for help and couldn't help but be somewhat amused at what he was seeing, he turned in his seat to concentrate on his assignment. He continued to place all the ingredients and do each step carefully so he didn't mess up. When the Wormwood was done, his sculpture came out better then he thought it would.

Aphrodite thought that this seemed easy enough but she knew better then to actually say it. She didn't know everything and didn't want to make it look like she did either, so for the first step Aphrodite poured sand into her cauldron and by using the Ventus Jinx, she was able to separate the quarts from the other minerals of the sand. Next she took out the waste of minerals and left the quartz in the sand that was in her cauldron, then she poured a medium size of water into her cauldron and placed the lid over her cauldron and used the stick charm to keep it sealed.

She turned the heat up really hot and high so that it increased the melting speed and malleability, after 15 minutes she released the lid and refrained from looking inside because she didn't want her face to get burned off. She poured what was in the cauldron onto her desk and left it to cool on her desk, when it was cool enough she began to sculpt her invention and was satisfied with what she got.

Alexander meandered around the room, watching as each person set to work on their transformations. Thana had finished first, and he was quite impressed with her glass figurine "Very good, Thana," he commented to the Wormwood.

He noticed the Nightshade, Aragon, finished soon after. Aragon had a more simplistic design, but it was still quite good "Good job," he said with his usual grin, continuing around the class. He stopped by Jareth, whose attempt didn't quite work out. "Uh, not quite right. But if you practice, it'll become easier," he assured the boy.

He moved onto Ares, who had made a blue dragon "Well done, very impressive Ares," he walked to Aphrodite, who had made a simple cat figurine "Great work," he smiled.

After he went through everyone's, he walked back to his desk.

"Great work everyone, for homework, I'd like a short length of parchment on the methods used, and the properties of sand," he said "Class dismissed."
