The society in which she was raised was a tight knit group that knew all of your business and you knew theirs. It was by no means spread by the primary source, but rather through the word of mouth of their so called confidant. It was both restricting, having a constant monitor, but a way to express your grandeur. And for Tess, being raised in this society meant that she knew the ins and outs of what it was to be a proper lady.

Their current circle was all in a flurry over a new pureblood put into society. New pureblood was a loose term, but for the Walters, it seemed that it was a new way to put their daughter in the limelight. Tess' mother had told her of the girl, and had asked her to take her under her wing, for the sake of propriety and the good fortune in would land their own. She took it in stride, having passed the halls and shared classes with the girl.

Everyone was in agreement that she had thankfully been welcomed to the society prior to the coming out balls, meaning she had proper time to get herself together. And based on what Tess had seen, the girl was going to be an interesting task. She chose the restaurant purposely for it's exclusivity; only a name that held power could enter. And she figured gracing Brooke into the society she was meant to be in would be her gift before the coming out show.

With a a lily in her hair, and a orchid colored sundress, Tess walked with purpose towards the restaurant. A lift of her sunglasses so they could see her face was enough for her to get in. Her features were clearly of only one family. She did leave a note, for a Miss Walters to be taken to her seat. She had prime seating, choosing a booth to give them privacy to talk and enough visibility to create buzz.

"I'll have a glass of sauvignon blanc thank you" she drawled to the waiter as she waited for the girl to arrive.

It had come as a huge shock to her, the day her mother had come into her room and told her the truth. She remembered it so well; it had been almost a week ago, on the morning of her fifteenth birthday. Her mother had announced she had a surprise, and not had it been one heck of one.

Her father, missing from her life since before she was born, was a pure-blood. It took a few moments to settle in, but once it did... Brooke was not very happy, to say the least. Limelight had never been something she enjoyed, much less sought out, but it was as if a giant neon sign was plastered over her head, because she could not escape the looks and glances she got when she walked down the road.

She had been relatively surprised when she received a letter of invitation from a member of a rather influential family of pure-bloods - the Holmes family - to a lunch. It was set to be just after noon, and so, a full twenty minutes early, she found herself walking down the street in search of the place.

Donning the most formal dress she had, a blue and lilac sundress to match her forest-green hair, she entered the restaurant that she had never even ward of before that day. Immediately she was ushered to a booth, where she saw a familiar face, the head girl of Hogwarts and a Slytherin, Tess.

With a smile, she slid into the seat opposite the girl. "Hey Tess," she greeted. Turning to the waiter, she added, "Just a glass of ice water for me, thanks."

The murmurs were enough for Tess to know that Brooke had arrived. Smiling softly, she got up and greeted Brooke softly, the way her mother taught her to since birth. One kiss on each cheek before they both were seated. She made sure to let the fabric rest on the seat, fanned out so nothing would wrinkle and had a ramrod posture. This was a brand new setting for Brooke it seemed from her expression. It was no surprise, only a handful of families were even knowledgeable about the location.

"Good afternoon Brooke" she said kindly.

It seemed right as the waiter brought her the flute of white wine, Brooke had asked for water. The waiter seemed a little surprised at the new arrival but nodded, as Tess gave him a look, signaling for menus. Even the waiters were purebloods, all knew, barely pure if their history was really read into. Nonetheless, this establishment promised luxury and privacy from prying eyes.

"I'm glad you came, I know that it's been a lot to take in" she commented studying the girl's dress. It was nice she supposed, it matched her hair but she was surprised to see her hair still green. The waiter made no comment, and wouldn't if he knew what was good for him. Still, taking a sip of her wine she sighed satisfied at the age.

Soon enough the waiter came, with a flute of water with a lemon wedge and two menus. Placing them carefully at the center for them to be picked up and scurried off knowing the need of privacy. Looking up at her from her menu she wondered exactly how she could bring up the need to train her without actually saying it. Brooke's father had been clear from what her own father told her, that being subtle in the teachings would suffice enough. Figuring that their old friend was asking for a favor, Tess could do this for her father.

"What are you thinking of having?" Tess asked curiously.

She figured studying her current manners would work wonders.

The kiss on either cheek came as a surprise to Brooke, and she hesitated, letting it happen but not doing anything in return. When Tess sat, Brooke sat, too, sliding herself further in.

"I'm glad you came, I know that it's been a lot to take in"

She laughed, nodding. "You could say that again. Merlin, sometimes I think I'm dreaming. It's just so odd!"

Her water came, not in a cup as she expected, but in a tall, narrow glass. Eyeing it for a few moments, she paused before reaching over and taking a sip. Grabbing the menu, she studied it, recognizing nothing written on it.

"What are you thinking of having?"

"Uhmm," Brooke thought for a few moments, glancing down at the menu once more. "Do they have hamburgers?"

Brooke slide into the booth, she actually slid. Tess, in her sixteen years of living never had seen a pureblood do that. Blinking a few times, she tried to get herself together. It was going to be interesting, definitely something she'd never thought of getting herself into. Still, the girl had a charm about her, if she paid more attention to the finger details, like her nails, her posture, her aura.

"You could say that again. Merlin, sometimes I think I'm dreaming. It's just so odd!"

Tess laughed softly at her comment. While she could never imagine herself to be anything but a pureblood, the thought of being pushed into something she was molded in sounded frightening. Especially with the rumors circulating, of Brooke's past and why now. All very scandalous, but no one would ever have the gall to say it. Funny how they all worked that way.

"I suppose it can me odd, I couldn't imagine myself as anything different than who I am. But this world, it molds you, and gives you many prospects that you couldn't have before. Trust me, you'll fit right in once you get the hang of it"

Her smile, soon vanished to surprise at the mention of Brooke's choice of food. A hamburger? What was that?

"Um..they do have hams, but Brooke don't you think maybe, since it's a luncheon something a bit more...proper such as some coq au vin, beef bourguignon, some quiche perhaps?" she suggested lightly. "Instead of something so..they don't serve that here"

Looking down on her menu she thought perhaps a three course menu would be enough to show her the ropes, especially once the coming out party would happen.

"You know...all of us attend the spring coming out show, where young ladies are presented to our society..you're expected to come of course. I wonder, do you know anything about them?"

Sipping awkwardly at her water, she wondered briefly why it had to be presented in such a fancy manner. It wasn't as if it was champaign or anything of that sort, not that Brooke ever ordered anything like that. She never did like the taste of alcohol, with the exception of butter beer. Maybe on second thought, she thought, it would have been better to order that. She spent a few moments debating internally if she should order one, but decided against it just as Tess began to speak.

Turning her attention back to the girl in front of her, she smiled. With a chuckle, she shrugged. "I don't know about that. I like my privacy, you know? All this-" she motioned around, indicating the place as well as the stares she could feel she was getting, "- is totally not my thing."

The topic was switched to food, and she felt her stomach grumble slightly. "No, not hand. Hamburgers. You know, the meat between two buns and the lettuce and..." she trialled off, shaking her head. "Never mind that. Uhm, what do you recommend?" she asked, staring blankly at the names on the menu.

Now, if you had asked her a few months back, she would have said that food was something she knew, mainly because she loved eating. But now, presented with such foreign names, she wondered how she could have ever thought such a thing. "Why don't you just order," she suggested, folding the menu and placing it in front of her in defeat.

When Tess mentioned something about a spring show, confusion lit up her features. "Sorry, presented? Like models or something?" she shrugged helplessly. "I have no clue what you're talking about. Is it some sort of fashion show?"

Tess' eyes softened at the girl's confusion. Perhaps it was because it was in her world, and it was her comfort that she couldn't see the girl's perspective. It was already enough that the girl was raised by a single mother, but to be thrown to propriety was all the more shocking. She leaned over and patted the girl's hand softly.

"Privacy? Privacy is something that you tend to lose when in this society, apart from your home at least" she said in a quieter tone. "You have your name on newspapers, your name is on everyone's tongue, and you constantly carry a responsibility of your family"

It was a bit to carry, and she never really realized it. But that was the reason behind her own need to perfection. It was a bit surprising to admit it and really feel that way whenever she got out of her house. Sighing she shook her head and took a longer sip of her wine.

Signaling the waiter she smiled and asked for the three course meal with the beef bourguignon, and the salad, soup, not to mention the sweet. Turning over to look at Brooke, she noticed her defeated look and tilted her head.

"It's soup, salad, and some steak and potatoes in case you...in case you were unsure" she said softly.

Sorry, presented? Like models or something?" she shrugged helplessly. "I have no clue what you're talking about. Is it some sort of fashion show?"

Merlin. What had Brooke's father even told his daughter? Wondering how to explain it, she remembered how her mother told her.

"A coming out show is not a fashion show exactly...single pureblood ladies are presented to society as eligible and right to marry. That way, men can know to contact families that..that can form a union through marriage"

"You have your name on newspapers, your name is on everyone's tongue, and you constantly carry a responsibility of your family"

She couldn't help but wince at the statement, shaking her head. "Family?" she repeated incredulously. "I only have my mother. I do not consider that man to be my father. He left before I was born... I have never met him before, and he decides to thrust this onto me? No. I may be a pureblood but the only family I have is my mother and my grandparents."

There was so much more that she wanted to say, including a list of rather foul words that she hardly ever used. It wasn't in her nature to swear, and it was due to this that she gave another shake of her head and took another drink of water, not wanting to start on a rant.

As Tess ordered on her behalf, she listened to the food that she would be eating and frowned. 'Bourguignon' sounded like a name of some science experiment gone wrong, like Frankenstein or something. When the Slytherin - and there was no denying this was what the girl did - dumbed it down for her, she let out a small laugh. "Thanks for that," she said, meaning it completely. "I would still prefer a hamburger, I think; I like actually being able to pronounce the name of what I eat."

"That way, men can know to contact families that..that can form a union through marriage"

She gave a snort of indignation at this, but waited till Tess was done explaining before she said anything. "I am not some piece of jewellery to be set on display and bought!" she exclaimed, letting out a huff. Like most girls her age, she did eventually want to enter a relationship, get married, and have two kids (or more), but she was only 15! And, unlike most girls, she had never been interested in the idea of boys-as-anything-more-than-friends at this stage, instead wanting to wait till she was at least of age before she dated. "I don't want to get married to a stranger!"

If Tess ever felt pity for parents it would be at this very moment. The way that Brooke immediately raised her voice, made her embarrassed. People began to look their way, and worst of the came the murmurs between their meals. She tried to keep herself proper and straighten her back all the more as people looked. She casually glanced their way and signaled a look of knowing that if word got out, it would be from only them and consequences would come.

"Please lower your voice" she said calmly, "I understand this is a new world, but by no means are you to insult your father, if you must, do so in private. Word gets around a bit too easily in environments like these, best you realize it quickly" she said a bit put out, "while we're at it, straighten your posture, shoulders back please, helps you avoid back problems"

As the food came and was placed on their table, she murmured a thank you and placed the clothed napkin on her lap, and casually began to cut into her food. The less a scene was made, the better it would be.

"As for the way marriage works, don't demean it, it's tradition. Secondly, we might be displayed, but in no way does that promise you that you will be asked for your hand in marriage, and based on your demeanor at the moment and maturity...you won't be offered anything but a small smile" she commented firmly. "Now I suggest that you eat..."

"I understand this is a new world, but by no means are you to insult your father, if you must, do so in private.

Who is she to tell me what I can and can't do? she thought bitterly. Did she even know how hard it was for my mum to raise me by herself? "I have every right. He ditched my mother. Left her alone, and now thinks he can come and ruin our lives again?" she scoffed, although she lowered her voice. There was no way she would give that man - she did not consider him to be a 'father' in her eyes - any satisfaction. She didn't know what it was he wanted, or why he suddenly announced to the world that she was a pureblood, but whatever his reason, she was not going to give him so much as the time of day.

Still mentally cursing at her father, she straightened her posture like instructed, not because she wanted to obey, but because she saw no harm in doing so. They were interrupted by the arrival of the food. Never in her life had Brooke seen such style of serving, what with the fancy plates and the numerous forks and spoons and knives. Turning to the waiter, she smiled and said politely, "I only need one of each, really."

"...you won't be offered anything but a small smile"

"Good," she commented before she could stop herself. Since it was already out there, she shrugged once and decided to continue. "I mean, I don't want to get married yet. That's what happened to my mum, and see what happened? She was left pregnant to raise me by herself." Again, she couldn't help but bring her father into this. It had been over fifteen years, but she could not - would not - forgive him for what he did to her mother.

"I have every right. He ditched my mother. Left her alone, and now thinks he can come and ruin our lives again?"

Tess flushed in embarrassment for the younger girl in front of her. It was so obvious that she was not a proper pureblood, maybe in her genes she was one, but she was cultivated all wrong. She was too brash, sharing far too much to a person, like her of all people, about the woes of her family. The Walters' family was already sort of frowned upon for abandoning the family, the new rumor was that he did send money. While still looked down on, it would probably be blamed on the woman, as tradition stood.

"That is not my business to input my own opinion on the situation. All I can say is that, while still frowned upon, what he did, you still carry the weight of your family, please keep that in mind."

Her voice was steady and trying to calm her down. It was embarrassing for both families if the business is let out. All the more horrified feeling came when the server came with their food. First the salad and three forks, spoons and two knives and three spoons, and a soup beside them. Before she could turn and thank the waiter, Brooke had already said something so uncultured that both the waiter and her were shocked.

"E-excuse me, forgive her. She is only joking" she said hoping to calm down the waiter as well as her burning cheeks. "Thank you for your hospitality, I'm sure you'll return with the main course soon"

Nodding, the waiter took nothing back, instead rushing off, and Tess could almost feel them telling their co-workers about the situation.

"I mean, I don't want to get married yet. That's what happened to my mum, and see what happened? She was left pregnant to raise me by herself."

She sighed, loudly in annoyance. Brooke's daddy issues were clear from every single word out of her mouth.

"Trust me, that is not common for any pureblood family" she said clearly, "No one wants to get married, it's our duty, so long as you are polite that is all any person could ask for."

Signaling her to put the cloth napkin on her lap, and pick up the spoon that was perfectly circular she took a small spoonful of the soup.

"By the way, you eat from the outside to inside method. As in the first fork for the salad, the next for the main entree, and the last for dessert. Understood?"
