PostSubject: Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5)    Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) EmptySun Sep 07, 2014 5:27 pm

It was the beginning of another year, and Mycroft was already exhausted. His summer consisted of helping Teagan to rebuild Salem's walls and try to cope with the death of students. It was a daunting experience, one that tired him out in all aspects of his life. Now it was time to look forward, to try and forget the negative and try to continue the task.

At least Hogwarts needed no improvement. It was the most stable thing at the moment. The room was bright, the summer was still prevalent and helped light the classroom from the lake's reflection. He wanted to do two things today for his class, but the deciding factor would be the number of students. He knew that separating the fifth years from the older students was not going to be taken lightly, but he figured, this year, after the attacks, it would need to be more advanced.

The time for potions had finally come around and Victoria was happy for two reasons. One, it meant she knew exactly where she had to go from her common room to the classroom and wouldn't need the poorly drawn map she'd managed to get from an older student. And two, it meant that she would be seeing Professor Holmes, who was without a doubt one of her favourite teachers.

Skipping down the hallway with a confidence she hadn't had until now in the new school. After carefully opening the door, Victoria noted she was the first one to class and everything seemed to get it's normal structure in life. With a warm smile towards the professor, Victoria moved to her seat at the front of the room and took out her book and notebook. "Good morning, professor!" She added once she was settled, her quill in hand and the ever eager demeanour that followed her in to class.

Stacy was quite okay in potions but she really didn't like it so much but it was useful lesson most of times. She got knew about new potions and so on. But she didn't always excied in the lesson. She soon walked into the classroom. "Hello professor," she said with smile and then took seat some where middle of classroom. The girl who was in this classroom was someone qho she haven't seen around before. She didn't really look like first year so she is transfer atusent - that is what Stacy thought right now.

Violet had grown to strangely like potions, she felt it was mainly the location. She always preferred the dungeons. And brewing all the different concoctions, she just really liked. And it was a subject that she was good at.So she made her way from her common room to the dungeons, and walked into the classroom, seeing that already there was another Hufflepuff who she didn't know. She must be new, she thought as she took her seat up the back, without acknowledging the girl or the Professor, or the Ravenclaw, just readying herself for class.

As this was one of Louise's favourite classes she had come down early to make sure she got a good table, she could see others had gotten there before her but not so many that she'd be stuck at the back. She began feeling more like herself as her lessons began taking the forefront of her mind again. She slid into a seat at one of the benches and put her bag to one side then checked her sleeve wasn't going to be in the way during the lesson. "Morning Sir."

Ingrid made her way down to the Dungeons, this would be her first Potions lesson, she thought that this subject couldn't be to hard.

As the young Ravenclaw walked she noticed all the students were older girls, she found a seat away from everybody, she didn't really see the sense in making small talk with pathetic people. And from what Ingrid could see these girls were pretty pathetic, half of them looked like they had never looked in a mirror before.

At that moment Ingrid made sure her hair was perfect before placing her bag on the bench.

Natasha made her way down to the dungeons, it was quite a way away from her common room, but that was okay because she had come to really like potions. She even came to like the gloominess of the dungeons. She made her way into the classroom, nodding at the Professor as a greeting before she slipped into her usual seat, readying herself for the lesson.

Seeing more than enough students from his roster , he figured he should start the class. If others came in, points could be deducted depending on the time. Clearing his throat he got up and walked over to his students.

"Good afternoon students, it's nice to see some new faces and some familiar. I'd like to start off by saying that today we will be making a potion that is needed in St. Nick's Hospital. They've had a shortage in many potions and pastes. So today..."

Moving to his blackboard, he wrote out the words Burn-Healing Paste and turned to face the students.

"Can anyone tell me what the potion is? Next someone please tell me what use it could do. Who would like to start?"

When Ingrid heard what they were learning about she was disappointed, she was hoping they would be learning about a potion which could cause burns or pain not some boring paste. The girl wasn't sure if you were supposed to raise your hand, so she just blurted out the answer

"Well the Burn-Healing Paste is this really thick burnt orange coloured paste, it is said to have a scent similar to that of aloe vera" Ingrid said, before beginning to search through her bag for another quill, she didn't bother waiting to see if the Professor told her she was correct, because well she already knew she was.

Kedzie was trying not to run in the halls which is why she was speed walking to her next class. She knew that Professor Holmes was not a force to be messed with and that he was always so serious and never took anyone's stuff. Which is why deep down she was a little afraid. The Ravenclaw walked into her classroom and saw that the class started already. "Sorry I'm late Professor Holmes" she said as she took a seat at an empty station.

Bethan quite liked Potions, excluding the bits that involved dead slugs and animal insides, which she found quite cruel and unnecessary. And the professor was alright, if a little too strict for her liking. So she was interested enough to turn up. And turn up she did, just in time for the start of the lesson. She took a seat at the first desk she saw towards the front of the room.

She listened as a girl answered the question. It was good - she had been reading about this a couple of days ago, which meant she could raise her hand to answer the second part. "Well... er, it heals burns," Beth said awkwardly. That bit was fairly obvious.

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5)    Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) EmptySat Sep 20, 2014 8:15 pm

He was surprised to see a Ravenclaw raised her hand; he never really noticed her before, but her demeanor, it reminded him of many people he'd met before. Signaling her to start, her tone was so monotone, it was boring, like many people tended to be.

"Well the Burn-Healing Paste is this really thick burnt orange coloured paste, it is said to have a scent similar to that of aloe vera"

But none the less correct, and nodded.

"Very good Miss...York" he said after seeing his list of names, "Five points to Ravenclaw"

Right after he awarded points his door opened to see another Ravenclaw coming in, and late at that. Miss Loraine looked a bit distraught over being late. Every student of his knew his reputation and he sighed.

"Considering it is a first offense Miss Loraine, you will not lose points for your house."

Looking over, he noticed the young Hufflepuff raising her own hand, a bit tentative only to answer the question quite redundantly and he couldn't help but not awkwardly at her comment.

"Thank you Miss..Fielding. Now, today you will be making the paste, but not exactly the one in your book, rather my own interpretation of the paste that is known to be more potent. I ask that you take out the gloves from the drawer of your desk, and partner up if you'd like, while I put up the ingredients. Make sure to follow them perfectly, and avoid getting anything on your clothes."

Burn Healing Paste

1. Put one liter of a base liquid, I suggest goat milk.
2. Add one cup of Ptolemy, careful it stains.
3. Let it simmer until it becomes a pale orange color, remember to try and not make the milk curdle.
4. Half an Ashwinder egg, please accommodate amongst one another and give the other half to another member making the potion to not make waste.
5. Immediately after cover the cauldron and let it thicken for 5 minutes.
6. Meanwhile, get 1/4 cup of mint, three orange peels, and get one potted Aloe vera. Carefully cut three large leaves and peel off the skin, taking out the sticky paste. Place in mortar and mix all together.
7. After the five minutes have passed, take off cover and put all the ingredients in the cauldron. Add a cup of honey and begin to mix. The potion should begin to thicken considerably. Once it becomes too hard to keep mixing, lower the flames and let it cool, never once stopping to mix. Once done, place them in the containers before you and you may leave.

"Any questions? If not you may begin."

Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5)    Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) EmptySun Sep 21, 2014 5:59 am

Victoria had remained quiet as the class had begun, being surrounded by so many new people was quite intimidating, and though the witch knew she had the right answer, she hadn't spoken up. However, it wasn't long before people were answering and Victoria made notes as they spoke for later reading.

When they were done, and Professor Holmes told them to put on some gloves, Victoria did as she was told and set to working. She was going to work on her own today, mostly because she didn't know anyone, but also because she knew that she could shine if she did it alone. Though, of course, she was pretty sure Professor Holmes already knew of her capabilities from their classes at Salem.

Noting all the ingredients down on a piece of paper, Victoria hurried off to the store cupboard, collecting everything she required on a tray before she hurried back to her seat. It was all neatly lined up in order on her desk a moment later, and with a small wave of her wand, she lowered the desk so she could see over the top of her cauldron. Everyone was so much taller than her, but she couldn't help but need to lower the table, it would save on accidents.

Taking out the goat's milk, Victoria sniffed it first to check it was still in date. She most certainly didn't want to start with bad ingredients. The milk smelt fine though, so she carefully poured the litre in to the cauldron, putting the flames on lightly as she checked the board for the next instructions.

Reading the words of the next ingredient staining clothes, Victoria smiled to herself. Just as she'd thought, the man before them did have a sensitive side that worried. Victoria decided she liked Professor Holmes in that moment as she checked her gloves were firmly in place before getting the one cup as stated. Pouring it so very carefully in to the potion, Victoria waited for the potion to begin to simmer. She used the mixing spoon to push the powder in to the water, but she didn't stir because she knew she had to follow the instructions very carefully. The orange took it's time to become clear, but Victoria had always been very patient with these things. The witch kept her eye on the milk, hoping that it wouldn't curdle, because Professor Holmes instructions were right, it was quite the possibility that it would indeed happen.

Once the orange came to light, Victoria checked the board again, taking her Ashwinder egg and cracking it. Taking out half, Victoria poured it in to her potion and quickly put the lid on her cauldron before putting the Ashwinder egg on the table of the person next to her for them to use.

Obviously there was absolutely no time to waste, and Victoria set straight to taking the three biggest leaves from the plant and peeling the skin gently with a set of tweezers. Knowing the plant wasn't harmful, Victoria took off her gloves and squeezed the sticky paste in to her mortar, making sure to get as much as possible from each of the leaves before she took some mint leaves and finely chopped them before adding them to the aloe vera. The orange peels followed closely after.

Grinding the mixture together to get something of a thicker paste, Victoria checked her watch for the timing of the potion having been left. She was slightly early, so Victoria checked the instructions once more. Grabbing the honey, Victoria quickly, yet accurately, measured out the cup and pulled on her gloves to take off the lid. Steam rose from the mixture, and Victoria checked it over once before realising that she was ready to add in the other ingredients.

Pouring in the honey and the paste from her mortar, Victoria took up her stirring rod and leant over the cauldron to check what was happening. Of course, such heat and moisture only meant that her hair was becoming a crazy mess. Soon, the mixture became difficult to move the stirring spoon, so Victoria lowered the flames. She kept up the stirring, making sure to get everything mixed in. It would take a while for the whole thing to cool, and Victoria could already feel her muscles aching as the resistance of the paste made the turning harder. But when it had eventually cooled down enough, Victoria scooped out the contents in to the container provided. Victoria filled two, having made enough to fill the first she decided not to waste it.

After labelling her containers and sealing the lids, the Hufflepuff moved to the front of class and gave them to the professor before moving back to her desk. She took a moment to clean out the cauldron and then put away the ingredients she hadn't used where she found them. Heading to the sink, Victoria got a cloth and wiped down her desk from the small mess she'd made before packing up.

"See you next lesson, professor!" She told the man happily as she left the classroom, hair all frizzed up, but a smile in place. She'd done well, and she knew it!

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5)    Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) EmptyTue Sep 23, 2014 9:24 pm

When he wrote the instructions on the board, Violet set straight to work. She understood it well, and had no questions or queries about it. She always found potions to be a simple and straight-forward subject. Burn healing paste would be a piece of cake.

She walked over to the cupboard, gathering up the ingredients needed for the potion and walked back to her desk. Firstly, pouring the measurement of goats milk into her cauldron, setting a low fire as she did so, and then adding the cup of ptolemy, and waited for it to begin to simmer and become pale orange, noting to keep the milk at a low enough temperature to stop it from curdling. She saw the next ingredient was half an Ashwinder egg, and cracked hers, pouring half of it into the pale orange mixture, and then walking to place it on the bench in front of her for another person to use. She then left the potion to thicken with the lid on while she readied the other ingredients in the meantime.

After five minutes had passed, she added the remaining ingredients and the honey, stirring until it had become a thick and creamy paste, lowering the heat. She then scooped it into the containers and closed them. Once she had finished, she cleaned her station and gave the containers to the Professor, leaving then without a word.

PostSubject: Re: Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5)    Potions Lesson 1: (Years 1-5) EmptyFri Sep 26, 2014 12:05 am

At least she didn't have to talk to anyone, Louise thought, taking a glove out of the desk and leaving it to one side while she collected the ingredients. It was a slow start, trying to make measurements of each one precisely, then stopper all the bottles again but she managed, not daring to use magic on them just in case it had bad results or effected the ingredients.

She put the leftovers back in the cupboard before starting the actual brewing, trying not to make a mess of things while working one handed. The advantage to working slow however was checking everything twice before adding it to the cauldron. When that Lynch girl left the room Louise looked around and spotted the half egg left over, and decided using a new whole one would be a waste, so took the left over half to use in her own potion, hoping the hufflepuff hadn't done anything else with it.
She wished she had something to wipe the hair out of her face here but didn't want to get the glove anywhere near her face, it was mildly annoying and distracting, and keeping it out of the cauldron was always a worry.

Kedzie put one liter of goat into her cauldron before added one cup of Ptolmey and made sure she was careful with it because she didn't want it to stain her or her clothes. The Ravenclaw then let her start up potion simmer and watched as it turned orange and made sure her milk didn't curdle while doing this, she got half of an Ashwinder egg from someone else (she didn't know who) and then immediately covered her cauldron so her paste could thicken for the time being and while she waited on that, she began to mix up 1/4 cup of mint, three orange peels, and one potted Aloe vera. She cut three large leaves and peels off the skin and took out the sticky paste and mixed all the ingredients together in the mortar.

After the five minutes had passed, she took off the cover and placed all the ingredients she had mixed together in the mortar in the cauldron. She added a cup of honey and began to mix. She kept mixing even after the potion had thickened. When it was beginning to get too hard, she turned down the flames to let it cool and kept mixing. Once she was completely finished, she put them in the containers in front of her and grabbed her stuff too leave. Kedzie was glad that she had succeeded in doing this.

Natasha got straight to work once the Professor had written the instructions on the board. First starting with the goats milk, and setting her cauldron to low, as she added the ptolemy. She prepared the Ashwinder egg while it simmered until it had become a pale orange colour.

After she had added half of the egg, she covered the cauldron with the lid, and let it thicken. She covered the other half of the egg and then moved on to collect the aloe vera leaves, peeling the skin and collecting the paste from within. She peeled some oranges and got the quarter cup of mint, mixing it in the mortar until it was time to add it to the potion. She added the honey, then the mixture, and continued mixing until she couldn't. She turned off the heat and let it cool, before scooping it into the containers and cleaning out her cauldron. After that, she took the containers to the front of the room and gave it to Professor Holmes, and then walked out, having finished.
