PostSubject: DADA Lesson 1 – Years 6 & 7   Mon Sep 01, 2014 11:36 am

The latter years of Hogwarts were not going to have an easy ride on their first lesson back. Not that Jake ever gave simple assignments to the older students, but there would be no “easy” first lesson for the sixth and seventh years. No, Jake had decided to test his students the moment they got back, to make sure they didn’t believe that their N.E.W.T.S. were going to be a walk in the park.

Checking over the roster of students who had signed up, Jake smiled to himself and put the piece of parchment back on his desk, waiting for the first students to arrive after lunch. Behind him on the board showed the lesson for that afternoon “Spell Resistance.

Sage had a fairly uneventful summer and he was glad to be back at Hogwarts. His little brother Max was more upset then usual when Sage had to leave for Hogwarts. Max really wanted to go but he still has to wait one more year. Now Sage was walking to his first DADA Class as a 6th year. He was getting to class fairly early because he liked being early to places and because he finished lunch fast. As he walked into the class room Sage looked around. He wasn't very surprised that he was the first one there.

"Hello Professor." Sage said just loud enough for him to hear. Sage walked over to the right side of the room to wait for others to show up.

After a long summer, Tess was happy to get back to business. Being her last year, she was determined to be the best she could be. She strived for perfection, for the sheer fear of it ending far too soon. If her parents had their way, this would be the last year of her ever learning anything in school ever again. If it was going to happen, she figured she could take advantage now. Pushing the door open, she smiled seeing Jake at the front of the classroom. She could see that he looked happy, and walked in.

"Afternoon" she greeted softly.

Standing in front of the classroom, she noticed a hufflepuff and studied him. She'd never seen him before, but she nodded his direction as a greeting, before turning back to Jake.

Lucy had had an awesome summer, she almost didn't want it to end. Because summer ending meant her never-ending responsibilities as a prefect were back in place, and she would be loaded again with work. Though, admittedly, she was happy for the challenge, she'd manage. The first class she had back was Defence Against the Dark Arts, one of the best classes. She walked into the room, and grinned at Jake "Afternoon," she said cheerily as she slung her bag by her feet.

Cassidy was grateful to be back at school, becoming increasingly bored at home, with nothing to do. She enjoyed Hogwarts thoroughly, and didn't even mind having to do schoolwork as long as it was in this environment. She walked through the class doors, seeing a few people had already arriver. Smiling at Jake as she entered, she dropped her bag to the floor "Good holidays?" she asked him.

Classes were... less than enticing to Gina, she was there to graduate so her parents would at least find one thing good in what she did. However, Gina didn't try any further than turning up. Her magic was less than adequate for her age, but she scraped through enough to get to the sixth year, she doubted this year could be much more work.

Entering the class, the witch noted that once again the professor had rid the room of furniture and she sighed. Was it too much to ask for a place to sit? Gina didn't acknowledge anyone as she moved to the back and leant against the wall. Glad that she didn't have to talk right now because quite honestly, she didn't know if she could. Tiredness was a curse.

Bag slung carelessly over her shoulder, Brooke walked into her first lesson of the year, eyes sparkling. Defence Against the Dark Arts was easily one of her two favourite subjects - with the other obviously being charms - and it helped that her teacher was able to, well, teach! A small smile lit up her face as she made her way to the front of the class. The fact that there was an absence of tables and chairs only meant that the particular class would be hands on, a practical one, which only made her smile more.

"Morning Pro- Jake," she greeted, slipping into the habit of using a formal term before remembering who their teacher was. Her eyes wandered over to the board, where she let out a tiny squeal of excitement at the topic written on it before looking around, suddenly self conscious before letting out a soft laugh at herself. Sending an apologetic smile towards her Professor, she slid the bag off her shoulder, letting it drop to the floor with a soft thud. Glancing one more time at the two words on the board, she waited rather impatiently for class to begin.

The Head Boy wasn't overly fussed with school at the moment, sure he had the luxury of an extended amount of power and freedom, but the boy never felt restricted anyway. Defence Against the Dark Arts, however, was most certainly something he had time for, though. Slipping in to the room, Josh noted those who were already there and nodded towards the professor in greeting before moving to stand next to Tess.

"Holmes." Josh acknowledged softly, not going any further than that for now. Setting his bag down at his feet, Josh crossed his arms over his chest and waited for the lesson to begin.

As his students filled the room, Jake greeted each of them with a warm smile and a soft hello. It was nice to see many familiar faces in the school once again, even if all of them weren't overly talkative. When asked how his holidays were, Jake smiled slightly, remembering only momentarily the things he'd been up to. "I've had a nice break, yes, thank you Cassidy, I hope you all enjoyed your break too. However, today we are not going to be slacking in the lessons, no, today we are delving in at the deep end.

"So, for today's lesson, we will be studying Spell Resistance. Can anybody offer up anything they know on this branch of magic? One answer each please. Let's build up a nice rounded answer between all of us." Jake asked, looking around the group to see who would be the first to answer his question.

Tess looked to her side to see Josh beside her and gave him a small smile. As usually his body posture explained his impatience to get the class started. A few minutes later, Jake began his lessons and she was curious about the lesson.

She raised her hand immediately at his question. She'd read about spell resistance of creatures in a book some time ago, and was happy to give one response. Making sure to not go overboard and take over the whole answer, she simply smiled softly.

"Spell resistance is an ability to be immune to a spell, and it could be a trait that's genetic"

She always wondered how lucky people could be with that trait so innate to them. She knew creatures also had it, and some subhuman species, but what was clear that it was rare and definitely useful.

Looking around the room, she wondered when Joe would get there; although they had met up a few times during he holidays, she found she was itching to see him again. A relationship was something completely new to her, and while she didn't really understand it, she was beginning to get more accustomed to the feelings she had whenever she saw or thought of Joe.

Can anybody offer up anything they know on this branch of magic?

Pulled out of her daydream, she took a few moments to gather her thoughts. She was just about to speak up when she heard a familiar voice speak up, and waited as Tess gave her answer. Nodding in agreement, she waited a few moments before adding her own. "I'd say some spells, like Occlumency, could offer some resistance, too, although it would require lots of practice."

Being late to class wasn't something she had planned to do. She didn't want Jake to be mad at her because she was so caught up in writing a letter to Jareth that she didn't have the nerve to check the time. Alyson sighed and ran to class, she knew that you should never run in the halls but she had no choice and took the risk. When she got to the room, she took a few deep breaths and walked in. She saw Jake teaching and mentally wanted to punch herself. "I am so sorry Jake" was all she could say. She didn't want to be in trouble for loving her boyfriend but that was no excuse, she had duties here and that is what she needed to understand.

Josh had sat listening to the class supply their answers to the question presented to them with little and less enthusiasm. Blocking magic, it was a difficult branch of magic, and likely many of the students in this room wouldn't manage it. That notion amused Josh, weakness being pulled to the forefront in this class once more.

"Not all spells can be resisted." Josh explained, his voice filling the room without actually having to make much effort to do so. "So, when trying to use this branch of magic, you have to make sure you're picking the right spells to resist. It goes without saying that trying to resist the Killing Curse is not going to make any difference to the end result."

The explanation was longer than most, but still the one point that the professor had asked for. Josh wondered what direction this class was moving in, because it had the potential to get interesting.

"I am so sorry Jake"

Jake simply waved the witch in to the class, whenever there was an apology for lateness, he wouldn't mind. The three answers that followed Jake nodded to show that they were right but didn't address them individually. When the three students were done, Jake acknowledged. "Well done each of you, you're correct on each of the points that have been given, please take five points for your respective houses.

"Now, today we are relatively limited on what we can teach. A lot of magical resistance can't be practiced, sometimes it just happens. Either through deep affection, or strong feelings towards someone you wish to protect. There is also the resistance of the Imperius and the art of Occlumency. In classroom situation I can only show you the Imperius curse, I am not allowed to put you under it, so we will therefore be learning the art of Occlumency today." Jake explained, hoping people would be okay with that.

"Occlumency is the power to block out other people from your mind as they try to delve in to it. Today you will each take a turn in trying to block myself from your mind. Rest assured that any memories that may be seen will not be divulged to another person. You're each to try to close your mind off against my magic and push me out of your mind. It is unlikely you will be successful on your first go, but please do not be disheartened. You may take more than one go if you wish, and once you have attempted the spell, you may take a chocolate wand and head off early for the day.

"So, with that in mind, who would like to have a go first?"

Ryan knew that being late was bad and he had been late to Jake's class once before and now here he was again. The Gryffindor didn't like being late for things because he liked to learn about things he hadn't known before or was unsure of before. Ryan walked in and gave a small apologetic smile to Jake. "Sorry for my lateness sir" he apologized, he took a random spot and waited to see what would happen in the class.

((OOC: Sorry for the length. She uh, wouldn't shut up.))

As soon as Jake began to speak, she turned back to face the front of the class. When the purpose of class was finally given, she froze, a look of horror threatening to take over her features. She had so many memories she didn't want anyone to see, so many private moments that no one could ever know. Without realizing it, she shot a glance towards the older Slytherin boy, the Head Boy, and shivered. No one could know. It would mean that the entire reason she had suffered, the very cause of her silence, would have been for nothing. She knew that, while he left her and Joe alone now, his threats were still valid.

But she didn't want to leave, either! The lesson was so valuable, so interesting, that she had to stay. All she could do was hope, with everything inside her, that the memories Jake saw were not any of those, and that she was able to counter him in time. When she was home-schooled for that year she was sick, her father had covered this topic, so she knew the theory, knew what to do. Doing and knowing, however, are on two separate spectrums.

Before she could change her mind, she raised a hand, still shaking slightly, and volunteered to be first. She couldn't wait any more or the fear would take over and she would leave the class. She took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind of any and all negative thoughts. Keep your mind blank and empty. No emotions, no feelings. Box everything away. Let nothing be felt, she instructed herself, giving a nod towards Jake.

She barely heard the spell being cast, so focused on letting nothing penetrate her mind. But she felt it the moment it hit her. It was weird, as thought she herself was going through the corners of her mind, seeking out any memories, but she knew it wasn't her. Suddenly, like a flickering of a projector before a movie, she saw something flash in her mind. She recognized it immediately.

"Honey, there's something we need to tell you."

Brooke turned, looking down at the woman who had called her. She was hovering a few meters above the ground on her broom. Landing it with a bump, the much younger girl climbed off. "Yes mum?" she asked.

Back in the classroom, Brooke was struggling to shut out her Professor, trying to push away the strange presence in her head. The scene flickered again.

Looking down at the sealed casket. Raising a hand that wiped at her eyes. Turning her head to look up at her mother. "Why can't I see him?"

"It's not something you should see, dear," a tired voice replied.

Desperately shoving all thoughts of her grandfathers' funeral aside, she continued to try and block out the intrusive person. At first, Brooke didn't recognize the next scene that began to play out, but the moment she did, panic filled her.

Her head was resting against his shoulder, her own tears blurring the walls of the hospital wing. The soft voice of Joe, "What's wrong?" A long, long pause, and then her own voice responding with, "It w-w-was before the ho-holidays."

She could not let Jake hear the next part. With the last bit of mental strength she had, she imagined placing a wall between the memory and the Jake in her head, blocking him from seeing what came next. Forcing herself to empty herself of anything other than a blank state of mind. A few moments later when nothing else came up, she opened her eyes that she didn't even know she had shut and gave a tentative smile towards her Professor. Did she actually manage it or did he stop? She wanted to ask, but didn't dare. "H-how did I do?" she asked instead, trying to ignore the fact that he had just seen some very private memories.

"Sorry for my lateness sir"

Jake waved away the apology and motioned for Ryan to join the group. Apologies were always accepted in his room. Almost straight after Brooke stepped forward to give the task a shot. It took courage to step up first, so Jake saw it only as fitting that a Gryffindor stepped forwards first.

Jake gave the witch a moment to ready herself before he cast the spell. And almost instantly it began. The images were clear to start, much as Jake expected from a student who had never attempted this before, and Jake could see a younger version of Brooke.

Like a badly tuned television, the images became hazy when the witch tried to push him out of her head. Unlike a real life scenario, however, Jake didn't push back against the resistance, this was a place to learn, and pushing away was difficult enough. As the images moved to a casket, Jake felt a little uncomfortable, but it soon changed once more.

The final image included a Hufflepuff Jake knew, and the information, the scenario was sweet. But before he saw anything, Brooke pushed him out of her head completely.

"H-how did I do?"

"Excellently!" Jake replied with a warm smile. "You pushed away continuously and you pushed me out of your head well. It's a big achievement! Very well done, Brooke! Help yourself to a chocolate wand and then you may leave!" He explained, before turning to the class. "Who would like to try now?"

Occlumency? Oh this was definitely going to be a challenging lesson. It was a bit frightening to realize that someone could invade something as precious as you mind. She valued her privacy, at least in her own conscious compared to the rest of the world. And even if it was Jake, she wasn't sure if she wanted to try. No one would do excellent in this, and if they did...she'd be surprised.

Avoiding eye contact, she was grateful that Brooke went first. She wanted time to try to push things away, like if she was hiding all her secrets, insecurities, failures, everything that could taint the perspective that Jake had of her. She put herself as strong in front of people because nothing stung more than pity. She didn't feel as strong as before, she felt a bit worn, but as she heard that Brooke had ended. Before she could even question herself even further, she raised her hand.

Walking towards the center, she looked at Jake, staring right at him, wanting to remind herself that he wouldn't hold it against her. He couldn't...not in such a vulnerable position. Giving her consent she signaled him to start. Only the beginning of the spell was heard as she felt a tugging feeling in her stomach and her eyes closed tightly.

There was an echo, and darkness all around at first. She wondered if something had gone wrong, but soon enough the noises came. First came the noise of a whisper then of another person. Soon enough from darkness came a bright light. She remembered this place well, the place where Ben and her first kissed. It was an out of body experience the way her thirteen year old self was laying in the grass,  wet from head to toe from them jumping off the cliff. Her lips parted as she saw him reach over to caress her cheek, so delicately yet so memorable that she could swear she felt it herself. She closed her eyes tightly wanting to look away, but realizing that this wasn't just her own viewpoint.

"No" she whispered.

But it was too late.

"I-I'm glad to have you here with me"

"Tess...don't you see?" His eyes pleaded for her to understand. "You are my key."

She couldn't prevent it, there in front of her was her first kiss, her breathing grew heavy at the knowledge that this was the start of her own downfall. She felt so raw, a bitter taste in her mouth, feeling a bit violated at having someone push deeper into her mind than she even realized.

She closed her eyes and began to try and build a wall, trying to build anything that could prevent her and Jake from seeing this again. She hadn't thought about that in years and yet there it was for her to see, to replay her foolishness. She forced herself to begin to push out of her insecurities, flashing images of stolen kisses, fights, broken hears and lastly the broken promises of forever.

Pushing past the moments of weakness she found herself being tempted to look back at her imperfections. The baggage seemed all the more impactful when she realized how ugly she could be. From breaking her things in her room realizing the engagement of her brother, to breaking friendships and breaking her own heart in turn. She never realized how ugly she was...is.

"Get out" she whispered softly, her voice breaking.

Tears began to rise from her eyes and she looked into the darkness where she felt like she was being watched. As if her mind finally began to work once more, slowly she imagined bricks being built, her imperfection, her baggages, her mistakes began to be covered by walls, slowly pushing everything out. Soon enough, the wall came and went, and she was completely alone in her darkness.

Opening her eyes slowly, her lashes were wet from unshed tears and she looked at him, horrified that he saw so much more than she expected to even see herself. Her cheeks were red and she felt her hands shaking.

"I'm sorry" she mouthed towards him, feeling like she had disappointed not only him, but herself.

As Brooke moved away, Jake looked to see who the next volunteer would be. It was of little surprise to see Tess step forward. The Head Girl had always been an active participant in his classes, and today would be no different, it would seem. He was glad to see that even in the aftermath of the attack before the summer, the witch hadn't changed in that respect.

Waiting until the witch gave him the cue to attempt the spell, Jake made sure the witch looked calm enough to begin first. She did look a little tense, but that was to be expected in the given situation.

It was a few seconds later that Jake was travelling through the witch's mind, flashes of incoherent images flashing before his eyes until the one memory pulled through to the front. If Jake guessed correctly it was the previous Head Boy and the witch in question, and it was only a few moments later that the scene made sense. Young love, as Jake would see it, a happy carefree Tess to Jake, because he obviously couldn't know the full extent of what he was seeing.

But Jake was concentrating more on trying to see if the witch could push away from him.

And she did, it was a few moments later that the invisible wall went up, and once again, Jake allowed the student to just push away with no resistance. When the spell ended, Jake looked to the witch to see if she was okay, the mumbled sorry towards him shocked the professor who shook his head slightly. "Once again, very well done. Both of you managed to push me out quite quickly, very well done, Tess. Don't forget your chocolate wand on your way out." He told the witch, before turning back to the class.

"Who'd like to go next?"

Alyson watched as other people went and did the spell, the Gryffindor sat back and waited for her turn, Alyson didn't really want anyone inside her head but the only way to pass this class was for Jake to be inside her head. When Jake asked for another volunteer she stepped forward. "I'll go" she offered. She stepped up to the plate and watched as Jake pointed his wand at her and entered her head.

Alyson was five years old running from her older sister who was playing tag with her. Alyson was laughing like a mad woman and her little legs were carrying her away quickly.

"You can't catch me" Alyson chanted over and over again.

"Alyson!" Cece shouted as she continued to chase her baby sister. Alyson didn't see the moving car coming towards her, Alyson thought that it was the end of her life but it wasn't. She felt her feet come off the ground and looked to see that Cece caught up with her. "Don't ever run out into the street again" Cece warned.

"I won't, I promise" Alyson hugged Cece.

Alyson put up a wall to block out Jake and it worked. She was breathing heavily from pushing him out. It was harder then it looked. She looked at Jake before backing away, tears slowly began to fall from her face but she quickly wiped them away so barely anyone saw them.

The next person to step forward was Alyson, and Jake smiled to the Gryffindor, giving her a moment to compose herself before he used the spell to see in to her mind. The images came out fast unlike the others, showing that Alyson wasn't quite as defensive, but that was okay.

As he relived the memory with the witch, he could feel her slightly trying to push away, but the strength wasn't as good as the others. It didn't flicker with the effort of pushing away as it had with others, but almost as soon as the memory had finished, Jake was pushed away from any further information.

"Well done, Alyson!" Jake told the witch with a small smile. "Note for next time to try to resist from the start, it was a little easy to get in to your head." He told the witch, motioning to the bag of chocolate. "Please help yourself, and I'll see you next lesson!"

Turning his attention back to the room as a whole, Jake looked around. "Who would like to go next?"

Gina did not like this lesson, she did not like this one bit, the idea of someone getting in to her head terrified the Hufflepuff beyond her capability of explanation. She'd stayed out of the way as much as possible before she realised that the professor was not going to let her leave the room before she gave it a shot. So, moving forwards as the Gryffindor finished, Gina explained that she would have a go in nothing more than a whisper. She didn't look at the professor, merely waited for him to get inside her head as she held her wand much too tightly.

The images span in front of Gina very quickly, the first time she'd managed to ride her bike back in Italy as her dad stood before her, arms open with a proud smile on his face.

It flashed forward to the sad day her parents had told her that they would be moving to the United Kingdom to be closer to her mother's family who had already moved there for work. The sad look on her face showed that she hadn't wanted to leave the beautiful country.

Another jump in time. Meeting her cousins in England for the first time which had been highly delightful. So many new faces of friends she would make, though would later lose.

The day her Hogwarts acceptance letter arrived and the joy of everything that surrounded the notion that made her so very different from everyone else. The look on her parents faces showing their confusion, and then delight at the idea. But Merlin, that had changed everything, she realised.

Gina had forgotten the purpose of the whole exercise, and was happily reliving the moments until they left, leaving her standing before the professor with a look on her face that showed she had just realised she'd done so badly. "I'm... sorry, professor!" The Hufflepuff told him, her cheeks flushing bright red as she hurried from the room with the shame of not even trying to block him out. Why couldn't she be good at this? Anything? For once in her life!

As the Hufflepuff witch stepped forwards next, Jake once again allowed a pause, especially seeing as this witch did not look at all confident in giving this a shot. Jake waved his wand towards the witch, delving in to her mind a second later and through a mass amount of memories that were a lot less troubling than many he'd seen before.

Throughout the memories, there wasn't any resistance from the witch, he could see through so many memories so vividly that Jake wasn't sure the witch had understood. He gave her the benefit of the doubt though, but it simply seemed like he was watching a reel of film. Jake pulled out of the witch's mind, ready to ask her if she knew what they were doing, but it seemed the witch had known as she hurried from the room after apologising to him.

Making a mental note to check on the witch next time he saw her, Jake turned his attention sheepishly to those who were left. "Who would like to go next?" Jake asked, looking around the room.

Sage shuffled forwards. He didn't really want to do this but at the same time he did. He hoped that nothing about his family would pop up. He didn't really like his family. Sage took a shaky breath and waited for Jake to cast the spell.

Images flickered around in his mind until they settled. Sage was crying in the Hufflepuff dormitory and writing a letter to his parents. He was crying because he knew his parents would be very disappointed that he was sorted into Hufflepuff. His Mom and Dad where both Slytherins and they expected him to be the same.

Sage tried to form a wall in his mind. The images flickered again but then settled. "You're such a nerd Sage!" said Sage's little brother Max. Sage was ten years old and was reading a book.
"Nerds are cool." Sage responded.
"No their not! Nerds are weird and not normal. You should listen to Mom and Dad more." Max said and stuck his tongue out. Max then ran out of his room. A tear dropped onto the book Sage was reading.

Sage formed the wall again and this time it worked. The images went away and Sage stumbled backwards. "Sorry Sir..." Sage mumbled. He didn't like reliving those memories at all.

The next to step up was the Hufflepuff boy Jake didn't really know, but from the list of names he'd remembered, he could only place the boy as Sage. When the boy was ready, Jake cast the spell, wondering what memories he would see this time, if any at all.

It was only a short memory that was lived, though a hard one, Jake was sure. So when the resistance came, he wasn't surprised that the boy sounded a little unimpressed. "Very well done, Sage, you blocked me out as requested. Please take a chocolate wand and head on your way, no homework this week.

"Who would like to go next?"
