PostSubject: DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5   DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5 EmptyMon Sep 01, 2014 11:36 am

The second lesson of the day that fell just before lunchtime, brought the middle years of the school together. Jake was ready for more complex magic to be welcomed with these years, but also glad that he would see his younger sister settling in to her new school. Not that he favoured her, of course. The room was devoid of furniture, though he was sure there would be the odd student who decided to sit on the floor – something that never ceased to amuse him.

Leaning against his desk, Jake checked his watch for the time, noting the students would be here soon. The board already held the spell they would be learning today “The Seize and Pull Charm”. It was more of a useful spell than anything else, and Jake hoped the students were ready to learn, enough so they could put the spell to the test in the time they had.

Stacy decided to take DADA this year for herself. She found in needed lesson for herself. It's good to know spells also charms about dark arts. Even if she really wasn't fan of DADA classes. She didn't really hate it too. If she would hate it then she wouldn't go to thar lesson now. She walked through the hallways towards DADA classroom now.

She soon walked into classroom and realized that she was first in the class what has really never before happened much. In here five years it has happen just five or six times before it. She never count exactly hoe much she havr been first one in the classroom. "Hello, professor," she said there and stood near the wall. Soon she leaned on it and waited for other students now to join.

Though everything in Allegra cringed when even the thought of hurting someone came to mind, she knew she was here to broaden her horizon. And besides, this was defense against the dark arts, not dark arts.

That in mind she entered what she hoped was the right room (she'd gotten lost so many times, but the portraits were usually quite helpful when it came to helping new students) and at first she wondered if she'd gotten lost after all. There was no furniture. But there was a professor and a board so the fifth year hufflepuff smiled at him warmly.

"Hola, Professor" she chirped, setting her bag down and sitting cross legged on the floor next to it, her wand in her left hand as the right absentmindedly played along the rills in the floor beside her, excited for the class to begin and hoping to see her new friend in class as well.

Violet was glad to be rid of the holidays, she'd had far too much of her parents for her liking. The perks of going to a boarding school was that she could ignore her parents and blame it on the school work. But it also meant having to put up with other, annoying things within the school. She made her way to the DADA classroom when she saw it was next on her timetable. Walking in, she saw a Ravenclaw leaning on the wall, and a Hufflepuff seated cross-legged on the floor. She stayed near the door and dropped her bag on the floor with a thud as she waited with her usual impatience for class to begin.

Carmen was walking towards DADA class. She needes to learn things but she really wasn't in the mood to do it. She walked in the class and saw thete few people already. Most of them were unknown persons since she haven't talked with others much. "Hello, professor," she said there emotsionlessy once again. She just stood there not very far from door and waited.

Beatrice found that following people who looked like they knew where they were going, usually lead her to where she wanted to go. There were, of course, flaws in this logic. For example, not everybody was going where she was going and following such people could lead her to the other part of the castle. Or they saw her following and thought she wanted to hex them.

Being a Prefect didn't help her at all, as people expected Prefects to know the castle well. There were little tiny people asking her for directions and whenever that happened, she just started talking in rapid french. She knew it was wrong, but she was just as lost as they were. Because of this, Bea stopped wearing her Prefect badge and kept it in her pocket, just in case she would need to present it.

Thankfully that day, she recognized a fellow Ravenclaw from 5th Year, figured she would be heading where Bea needed to be and followed her. This time, borderline stalking worked out and she came to the Defence classroom. She breathed out in relief and walked in. "Bonjour, Professor!" she smiled to the man she hoped was, in fact, Professor Newbury. Looking around, she saw Allegra and grinning brightly, went to sit next to her on the floor. "Glad to see you found your way."

Seeing Jake's class come up on her timetable had made Victoria smile widely. She finally got a moment to see someone familiar. True, a lot of the teachers were teaching at both schools, which helped her immensely to settle in, but Victoria still felt out of place. Especially with so many English people here and her "obnoxious" American accent throwing a few people away. Victoria hadn't known what to say about that to begin with, but decided that the person who'd said such a thing had only been having a bad day and they could sort it out soon.

With the hastily drawn map in hand that she'd come to rely on from an older Hufflepuff, Victoria finally managed to locate the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom. After slipping in to the classroom, Victoria noted that the one person she already knew was already talking to someone else. Sending a wave to Allegra, Victoria placed her bag at the side of the room and sent a warm smile to her brother. "Hi Jake!" She greeted happily, slipping out her wand from her belt and waiting for instructions.

Routine had come back like a blessing to Louise, getting up and getting ready was a welcome change from not doing very much. Her morning had gone alright, at least no one asked questions anymore, the stares she could handle, they were easier to ignore. She tucked her left sleeve into her skirt pocket and picked up her bag from the bench one corridor down from defence. She'd stopped to re-adjust the sleeve as it had a habit of coming loose and making people cringe.

She'd gotten better at relying on her right hand for everything, and thank merlin for helpful spells, such as shoelace tying and levitation. She could see a few people were already inside and walked in, taking a space near the right all to stand where she could see everyone and the professor easily. She offered a smile of greeting but remained silent for the most part.

As students began to file in, Jake greeted each of them with a warm smile and greeted them in much the same manner they greeted him. As one witch sat on the floor, Jake merely watched amused before he checked his watch and then decided to crack on with the lesson of the day.

"Okay everyone, welcome back to Defence Against the Dark Arts - or to those of you who are new to my class, welcome. Please use my name in future though, professor and sir make me feel uncomfortable, so Jake will be completely fine!" Jake explained good naturedly for the new students in his class.

"Today's lesson we will be looking at the Seize and Pull Charm. Can anyone tell me anything about this charm? One answer each please for now." Jake asked, looking around the many faces in the room expectantly.

Practically skidding around the corner, Tristan almost lost his footing but managed to keep upright as he made his way to the second floor. Finding his class, he slid inside just as their Professor started class. Just a few minutes earlier, he thought sheepishly, giving an apologetic smile towards his teacher. "Sorry, Jake," he said. "I uh, woke up late."

He made his way to the side of the room and leaned against the wall. His first lesson of the entire year and he was already late, he mused, trying to think about the charm he had just heard. "You use it to pull something to you or pull you to it," he said, hoping that it was correct.

From her seat on the floor Allegra grinned up at her two friends as they entered and soon enough Prof- Jake, was speaking. Making a mental note to just call him Jake in future she relaxed slightly. Of course, this was Victoria's brother and it would have been hard to imagine a relative of bubbly bright Victoria being scary or strict, but Jake really seemed to be a more relaxed kind of person and it put her at ease.

Quirking her head at the newcomer when he arrived and gave an answer she smiled, this sounded like a useful charm for every day life and she was sure it would be often needed, but seeing as her family didn't have magic at home it was a spell she only vaguely recalled from seeing teachers do it. What was the spell....axo...axio...acc..

Something. Oh well, she didn't remember. But that didn't deter the young hufflepuff, she was excited to learn.

She listened as Jake started the class, rolling her eyes at Tristan's obvious answer. It was called the Seize and Pull charm, of course that would be the effect. After he'd answered, she spoke up "The incantation, if I remember correctly, is Carpe Retractum," she said in her normal bored tone. She had read about it, and honestly it was too easy for her, this lesson would be a piece of cake.

As the class began, Victoria listened to Jake. He was always so honest in how he felt about the notion of being a professor, it amused her so much. But, Victoria agreed on the notion of being comfortable when you were working, so calling him Jake would not make any difference to her. Hopefully everyone else would oblige him too.

The class then started and Victoria, being new, decided to sit back until it seemed everyone had finished. She then raised her hand to answer her brother's question.

"The Seize and Pull Charm looks like a rope, orange in colour, which takes hold of the object you want to then move it towards you. It is very different to the Summoning Charm, Accio." Victoria explained, a small smile on her lips as she remembered reading about the spell already. Hopefully, that piece of information would be helpful to others too, because the spell was very similar in its outcome.

As the three answers came to him, Jake nodded between the three of them to show they were each correct in their statements. "Very well done the three of you, take five points for your respective houses." Jake replied with a warm smile. It was of little surprise that the group had managed a very rounded answer, the class was full of students with vast potential.

"So for today, we will be working on inanimate objects. You can use the spell on plants and animals, but for today we will focus on inanimate objects whilst you learn to control your capabilities. I'm quite sure Professor Reid would not thank me for any accidents in that department." He explained, a small smile on his lips at that notion.

"If you all look behind you, you will see each of you have an area of different items of varying sizes to practice on. Please be mindful of how quickly you pull the object towards you, or else you may end up with injuries to yourself and others." Jake added, waving them off to have a go. "If you have any questions, or problems, I will be moving around the class to help out when necessary."

"So for today, we will be working on inanimate objects. You can use the spell on plants and animals, but for today we will focus on inanimate objects whilst you learn to control your capabilities. I'm quite sure Professor Reid would not thank me for any accidents in that department."

Lupa, who was comfortably in Allegra's bag, shuddered at the same time as Allegra did at the thought of using the charm on animals, and Allegra whispered to her to keep her head down, not wanting anyone to get any funny ideas. So carefully holding her bag close to her body she smiled at Bea and Victoria and turned to the objects.

Allegra had never seen or heard of that spell. But to be fair, she'd gone to school in Mexico and thus was fluently capable of equally difficult charms that were of Mexican origin. But these were the moments when the cultural differences really showed.

There was a pillow about six feet away from her, so she decided to start with that. At least if it hit her it wouldn't hurt very much.
"Carpe Retractum" An orange rope fizzle in and quickly out of existence. Ah. Allegra focused, picturing the rope forming and grabbing the pillow. She tried again. This time it did grab onto the pillow and....it nearly knocked her off of her feet.

Staggering back a few steps she furrowed her brow and worried her bottom lip as she levitated the pillow further away, eager to try again and to try to get it to not knock her over.

Kedzie walked into class later then she expected herself to. No matter how long she has been going here, she still managed to lose herself in the crowded hallways. The Ravenclaw was surprised these Professors never kicked her out yet. She gave Jake a small smile. "Sorry Jake, the hallways were too packed with students, I was surprised I didn't get eaten alive" Kedzie apologized. She looked to see what the others were doing.

She listened as Jake went on about what they were doing in the class that day, and she watched as another Hufflepuff girl attempted, and finally got the spell, while a Ravenclaw entered, late. The spell felt familiar to her, so, she made her way over to the items behind, picking a medium sized one to begin with. "Carpe retractum," she aimed. An orange rope came from her wand and wrapped around the object. She pulled back and the rope dissolved. She needed to get back into practice of spell casting, it had been a long summer of minimal magic use. She tried again, this time concentrating more and pulled the object forward to herself.

PostSubject: Re: DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5   DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5 EmptySun Sep 21, 2014 2:55 am

Alexander was late, but he didn't really care. He'd left the mid morning break much too late, and now he wasn't going to get to class on time. Though, to be quite honest, the worst the school could do was write home. It would be amusing to see them try to complain to one of the school governors that funded the school so vastly. Perhaps he could work on that purposefully to see if the school would try?

An amused smile touched the boy's lips as he slipped in to the class, hoping to go unnoticed as he glanced to the board to see the lesson for the day. Seize and Pull Charm... Well, it couldn't be too difficult, right? Alex didn't think so as he slipped his wand from his pocket. Now... what was the incantation?

Noticing a Hufflepuff attempting the spell, Alex listened out to the incantation before smiling to himself. Making the whip like movement with his wand, Alexander muttered the spell softly and waited. Nothing happened. Of course nothing would happen. Glaring at the pile of items, Alexander turned his attention to the table everything was piled on.

Concentrating on that piece of furniture, Alexander started again, making the whip motion with his wand and speaking clearly this time. "Carpe Retractum." The orange light flashed around the table, grabbing the legs and pulling away hard. What Alexander hadn't been banking on was the weight of the objects on the table keeping the table in place, but the force of the spell pulling away the legs. Thus, toppling the whole thing and bringing it down with something of a crash. The Slytherin caught the table legs, smiling at his achievement.

Victoria was beaming when Jake told her she'd gotten her part of the answer right. It renewed her confidence since the summer to say the least. With the explanation on what they were supposed to be doing, Victoria took out her wand and followed Allegra towards that side of the room, taking up the station beside her. Though, of course, there was no need for talking, Victoria just preferred to be around people she knew in these situations.

Taking in the pile of different objects, Victoria noted a small stuffed bear and smiled to herself. That, was going to be the focus of her attention for the moment. Out of the corner of her eye she noted Allegra giving the spell a shot, only to be almost thrown off of her feet by the spell. "Are you okay?" Victoria asked the witch, worry etching her features almost instantly. But, it seemed her friend was okay as she moved back to trying the spell once more.

Deciding to concentrate on her own work, Victoria flourished her wand. Okay, the teddy. She told herself, concentrating on what she wanted to happen. "Carpe Retractum!" The witch spoke clearly, moving her wand in the whip like motion. The teddy moved towards her, very slowly, almost looking controlled, but Victoria knew that this was because she'd thought not to go fast having seen Allegra nearly fall over. With a smile on her lips, Victoria willed it to move faster towards her, and it did. In to her outstretched arms. The witch smiled, completely happy with her achievement as she looked towards her brother to see what he thought?

As the students moved to have their go at the spell, Jake noted that a Ravenclaw student entered the classroom.

"Sorry Jake, the hallways were too packed with students, I was surprised I didn't get eaten alive"

"No problem, Kedzie. We're studying the Seize and Pull Charm today, if you take up a place next to Violet, I'm sure she'll point you in the right direction." Jake told the witch, motioning to the Hufflepuff who was around the same age before he moved towards the Mexican witch who'd had a go at the spell.

Had a go and nearly got knocked over by the spell, Jake's wand had come to hand not a moment later, ready to conjure a pillow if the witch fell, but she steadied herself. "Very good, Allegra! You've got the basics down well there!" Jake encouraged the witch as he stood next to her. "Wise choice starting with the pillow too! Have another go and see if you can control the speed!" He told the witch, waving for her to continue as he moved towards Violet next.

"You almost had it there!" Jake told the witch, impressed that she'd managed to seize the object. "You had the most difficult part done, just keep your concentration and pull the object towards you and you should get the right result next time!" He told her motioning for the witch to give it another shot.

Next was a Slytherin boy that Jake had not seen enter the room. But, he didn't pull this to attention as he noted the boy basically damaged school property. However, Jake doubted it was on purpose, even if there was something of a resounding crash a moment later as everything hit the floor. "Umm... good try, Alex..." Jake managed, picking up the rolling pot of paint and putting it back in the pile. "How about you try something smaller first and try to get it to come to you... preferably whole?" He suggested to the boy uncertainly.

Finally, Jake moved towards Victoria, noting the hovering teddy bear that was moving between the pile of objects and her. Jake rolled his eyes slightly, of course she would have chosen the teddy out of all the things. It seemed Victoria knew she was going slowly and the teddy sped up, in to her arms where she cuddled it. Jake let out a soft chuckle as he stood beside her. "Well done, Vic." He told her, pride touching his smile. "Try something bigger now, you got the teddy!"

With that, Jake moved back to the middle of the room, ready to help the next person when he was needed.

PostSubject: Re: DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5   DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5 EmptyTue Sep 23, 2014 8:34 am

"Very good, Allegra! You've got the basics down well there! Wise choice starting with the pillow too! Have another go and see if you can control the speed!"

Allegra smiled, eyes still on the pillow in her hands, "Thanks, Jake." Then she tossed the pillow back away, still unwilling to try a heavy piece of furniture until she got the speed right.
Again she focused in the mental image of the pillow steadily approaching her and recast the spell. It jerked into the air and was shaking slightly as it hovered towards her as she struggled to get it to keep one pace, and she nearly had it. It was moving in a controlled speed, despite the shaking. Until it was a foot away from her, then her focus slipped slightly, too soon thinking she'd gotten it and it hurled into her as if thrown from a short distance and it broke in a cloud of feathers around her.

Leaving her sputtering feathers away from her mouth and brushing them out of her curls where they were becoming entangled, a slightly frustrated expression on her face, over shadowed by the amusement in her eyes. Seeing her in 'distress' had caused Lupa to scuttle out towards her, claws slippery on the floor as the chihuahua scampered towards Allegra.

"How do you control the speed when you do it?" she asked Victoria, since the witch had managed it well.

"Well done, Vic." He told her, pride touching his smile. "Try something bigger now, you got the teddy!"

"Thank you!" The witch replied, trying to find something a little bigger, heavier to try the spell on next. However, that concentration was broken a few moments later when a cloud of feathers erupted next to her. Victoria's eyes went wide as she looked across at Allegra, only to see her friend covered in feathers. Letting out a soft giggle, Victoria moved towards the witch and helped get rid of the feathers that the witch missed. "Are you okay?" Victoria asked, checking Allegra wasn't hurt, but she seemed okay.

"How do you control the speed when you do it?"

"Concentration?" Victoria replied uncertainly. There were just things she got naturally, though it wasn't usually in Defence Against the Dark Arts. "If you clearly see what you want to happen then it should work. I saw mine going slowly - admittedly I went too slowly first - and it did it. But other than that... I just keep concentration. Maybe try a slower pull of your wand towards you at the end of the whip motion?" She supplied, though whether that would work Victoria had no clue.

PostSubject: Re: DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5   DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5 EmptyThu Sep 25, 2014 11:55 pm

After hearing what spell they'd be doing Louise chose to wait for a few minutes to watch the others have a go first, trying to pinpoint right and wrong ways to perform it before trying it out herself. She adjusted her grip on her wand, taking it from a strap on her thigh and finding a relatively small object that would be easy to catch or dodge if she had to. She had little doubt she'd not catch it, she wasn't seeker for nothing, well if she still was seeker remained to be seen, she still had to make up practice time. She sighed and picked an empty ink pot, focusing first on how she wanted it to come towards her and giving a practice flick of her wand before attempting the spell.

"Carpe Retractum!"

She pulled back and opened her palm swiping diagonally down in the same fashion she usually captured a snidget in practice. She smiled at her result, and put it back where she'd got it from and returned to her space to try again.

Watching as people tried again, Jake couldn't help the small smile that touched his lips seeing Allegra's pillow explode somewhat. Though, he didn't move to help the witch, because he could see that the Hufflepuff was working with Victoria. That was always nice, when the students worked together, and he had confidence in his sister to teach thoroughly. Possibly better than he did because she would know the theory impeccably!

Instead, Jake turned his attention to Louise, the witch had been through a lot over the summer, he was sure, but she was back fighting, and it was so very nice to see. Staying back until the witch made a very nimble save of the ink pot, Jake moved over to the witch, smiling warmly. "That was a very good save, Louise!" Jake told her softly. "You'll make one of the best Seekers this year, I'm sure!" He added, his smile growing slightly. Jake would have words with the captain if Louise got dropped, because she deserved every chance she had.

"If you want to try again on something bigger, feel free. You don't have to catch it. See if you can pull it to be just in front of you, or something similar." He told the witch, hoping that would make it a little easier for her.

DADA Lesson 1 – Years 3, 4 & 5 Empty

Listening to the instructions being given, he smiled slightly when he was told he had gained 5 points for his house. Thinking back to when he first joined Hogwarts, he remembered how shy he had been and how the very thought of speaking out in a class terrified him; the smile turned to one of amusement at how far he had come since then.

Moving to a pile of objects, he watched others have their go, taking in what they did before he himself would try. When he saw an older boy from his house break the leg off a table, he stifled a laugh and turned his attention back to the objects in front of him.

Imitating the movements he had seen the others do, he muttered the spell, waiting as nothing happened. When a few seconds had passed without anything moving, he frowned slightly, taking a few moments to wonder what he did wrong. He shifted his focus onto the two girls near him - Victoria included - and tried to listen to their conversation, before it hit him that he was supposed to choose the object he wanted to grab. Deciding on a book in front of him, he again muttered the spell, moving his wand in the whip like formation. The orange light told him he had done it correctly, but the next thing he saw was the book flying towards him at a high speed. Quickly ducking, he heard it land with a loud thud somewhere behind him as he straightened, looking around sheepishly.
