Marilyn had known something was coming. And after recieving word from Jake that he was taking her somewhere and to look a little nicer that usual her dread had been confirmed. Since places like Fight CLub and the training area in the University were where she was mostcomfortable, she figured this situation would be...social.
Ugh. It wasn't like Marilyn was some kind of contact-avoiding, anti-social hermit...except yeah, no, she was. She just couldn't relax. It felt like wasting time. The witch just couldn't get behind the whole 'having fun just to have fun' concept anymore. Hell, the only reason she slept was because she knew her body needed it.
Side effect of being a prisoner for a year.

And she didn't really do 'looking nice' either. Sure, since Professor Clement had reminded her that she was beautiful with her scars she'd had less of an issue with them, but she wasn't kidding herself. She knew her appearance was generally disturbing at best.
The Auror in Training looked at her reflection in the bathroom mirror, slim and rough fingertips tracing over the scar tissue that covered her shoulders and raked over her chest and neck, then covering her shoulders with an oversizedblack sweater to fit with the black leggings and flats she was wearing. Still more practical than anything. At least that.
Brushing through her hair in an attempt to tame the curls that she usually only washed and air dried without much ceremony Marilyn sat down on her bed. She wasn't yet tired, but could feel a ghost of the strain in her bones from the evening that was to come. She'd just closed her eyes and taken a deep breath when she heard someone at the door and she called out, "It's open to you, Jake."

Jake hadn't been trying to be purposefully annoying when he'd sent Mari a note to tell her that he was taking her out to a local bar. He knew his friend and social situations didn't see eye to eye. But in a way, the ex-Belladonna was trying to help. For one, he needed to get away from his mother, it was amazing how much you treasured your freedom when it was too late, and for another, he just wanted to have a good time.

His body had fully recovered from the night at the fight club which had left him achy for a couple of days. Jake wasn't exactly sure if they'd go again, but at least next time he'd know what he was letting himself in for.

After pulling on a plain white shirt and a pair of black trousers, Jake had taken only a small amount of time to gel his hair into position before grabbing a jacket. His mom had commented on it being nice he was moving on so soon. Something Jake didn't fully understand as he kissed her cheek and apparated to England. To Mari's flat.

A soft knock announced his presence, and not a moment later, Mari's voice filled the air and he let himself in to her flat. He only smiled at her words of letting himself in, something he couldn't do, no matter what his friend said. "Hey Mari." The young man greeted, though she wasn't to be seen. "Are you ready to go?" Jake called, not moving too far from the front door because he felt rude just walking around someone else's flat.

The witch took another deep breath and stood, sliding her wand into her open shoulder bag and taking another glance in the mirror. Once frizzy curls were now sleek waves. Something she might've done before captivity, now foreign on her. To her eyes anyway.
"You can come in you know." Marilyn drawled as she emerged to where he was waiting, "I promise there's no thug waiting to test you on the sofa." While her mouth may have seemed serious her eyes had a mischeivous glint that had joking written all over it. And Marilyn's Jokes since escaping could be counted on one hand.
Perhaps she'd manage tonight.
She couldn't help but feel apprehensive, a thousand scnario's suddenly occuring to her. What if she was recognized? What if a Black Widow was there? What if they recognized her? What if someone tried to take her again- Marilyn's face became slightly vacant as she stared into nothingness like a deep in headlight.
After a moment she shook out of it, eyes downcast, "Yes, I'm ready." she stepped out of the apartment and locked up behind them. "Where are we going?

"I promise there's no thug waiting to test you on the sofa."

Jake let out a soft chuckle at the witch's words. "I don't think I want to test my chances." Jake replied jokingly. "I don't like walking around other people's houses without permission..." He told the witch softly, his tone slightly apologetic. It wasn't exactly right, in his mind, but he knew that some of the things his mom had taught him people thought weird.

"Where are we going?"

"Just to a small bar. Nothing too fancy. A few drinks, maybe a bite to eat if your hungry. I hear everyone our age is doing it." He told her, making it known that she was not the only one who wasn't used to it. It had become increasingly apparent recently that he'd been missing out on a lot of things these past few years.

Turning on his heel, Jake offered the witch his arm to hold as they walked. It was a friendly gesture, and she could hold on to him if it made her feel a little more comfortable. "It's just the next street along, so we can walk." Jake explained, looking sideways to the witch as they set off down the road. "And... might I say that you look... very nice tonight." It was a compliment between friends, Jake knew that for anybody the scarring would be horrific, he had his own battle scars on his back, though they were nothing noticeable unless you knew. But to be how Mari was... it must be difficult, and if nothing else, he wanted to make sure that she was as comfortable as possible.

"Have you been busy?" The Quidditch star continued, trying to keep up a conversation so that it didn't become awkward.

"Only teasing you, Newbury, don't sweat it. I don't mind." she replied to reassure him at his apologetic tone. He seemed to be nervous, perhaps he didn't go out often either. She knew he only wanted to help her by taking her along, so for her friend's sake she'd try.
"Thanks" she said taking his arm as offered, it was reassuring, otherwise she always felt like she was on exhibition, alone, for all to stare at. "Oh Good, I'm not a fan of side-along apparation either." the witch nodded.

"And... might I say that you look... very nice tonight."

"Thank you.  ...I know they're disturbing. Professor Clement told me that I shouldn't use a glamour because I should be proud of the scars." She answered, looking up when she spoke her her Professors words, she'd thought about them over and over and come to the conclusion that there were worse things in the world to suffer from, "You look good, too, better than when you were bruised and battered at least, " she teased, lightly elbowing him with the arm she had tucked in his. This was okay. She was outdoors, which made her slightly uneasy, but she was with a friend, a bestfriend even, who was trying to distract her, which was helping. She figured if she focused on their conversation she could at least make it to the actual bar.

"Have you been busy?"
"I'm trying to be. I'm usually training or studying. I had lunch with my partner a few days ago. Waters. She's a good person. Tries not to stare, treats me like a normal person and all. You?"

"Thank you. ...I know they're disturbing. Professor Clement told me that I shouldn't use a glamour because I should be proud of the scars."

"What? No, I didn't... I don't... Your scars..." Jake shook his head for a moment. Way to go smartass! He scolded himself. "I don't notice them, Mari. I meant you look nice, dressed up. Shall I just shut up?" He asked, he was being an idiot, he knew that. But for some reason it seemed the right thing to do, compliment a girl when she'd made an effort. Or even when she hadn't made an effort, yes, Jake was well and truly getting himself in a mess inwardly.

"You look good, too, better than when you were bruised and battered at least,"

"He was twice my size!" Jake defended, letting out a light chuckle at her playful elbow in his side. "And experienced! Though I thought we weren't supposed to talk about that." He added, raising an eyebrow at the witch beside him with a slight smirk on his face.

"Waters... Scarlett?" Jake asked, trying to recall the name from a student last year. Ravenclaw, if he remembered rightly, intelligent. "It's good to hear you're making... friends?" And Jake meant it, Merlin knew everyone needed them! "I've just been working, teaching and training takes up most of my time, mom fusses over me the second I get home. But, I've also been speaking to dad..."

Jake had to pause as they reached the small, upmarket bar he'd told her about, opening the door for the witch and following her closely inside. "What would you like to drink?" Jake asked, placing a hand gently on the witch's back and guiding her to the bar so that they wouldn't get separated. "Everything is on me seeing as I made you come out." The young man added, taking up one of the bar stools and ordering himself a beer.

"I know you meant me. They're just a part of me that i've been thinking about. I wasn't offended, Jake, really, I appreciate it. Don't apologize." Mari managed to rustle up a small smile to calm him down, though she wanted to raise an eyebrow. Why was he so nervous? He must really not get out often at all if the bar is making him nervous. Well then she'd just try harder to be pleasant, maybe he'd relax then.

"I was talking about me." She did actually smile then, mischievously remembering her win.

"I don't actually know her first name. We're Partners, that's all. I'm just glad she knows what she's doing, very clever that one, I'm glad she doesn't let this-" she gestured to her face with one hand, "get in the way."
The witch listened attentively as he told her what he'd been doing, at the mention of his parents she remembered her mothers, in New Zealand in hiding with her sisters. She hadn't said goodbye, hadn't thought it a good idea. However she wanted Jake to have a pleasant time and relax so she didn't want to mention it. There were no pictures in her home so from what he knows she might not even have a family.

"Thank you, Jake, I'll just have a Virgin Sunrise" she ordered, sticking to the no alcohol rule of the dreamless sleep potion she now took nearly every night. Marilyn shifted so her hair fell into the left side of her face, effectively hiding most of the scarring there, not wanting to attract attention or have to deal with any remarks. Her voice was bad enough a giveaway, she didn't need to add to it, perhaps the bartender would think she had a cold.
"So, you were talking to your Dad?"

The small smile was reassuring, why he'd gone with a compliment was beyond him now, but it didn't matter. They were friends, and Mari knew what he'd meant so everything was okay. The comment of her being the one on the couch made him chuckle. "You only won because I didn't know the rules." Jake replied, though really that wasn't much of an excuse either.

At the mention of cleverness, Jake was quite sure they were on about the same Waters. And, as far as Jake was aware the witch in question was very nice, so it would be good for Mari to work with her. Someone who could look past everything and just see Mari.

Once the drinks were ordered, Jake put the money down on the counter, lifting his glass to his lips and taking a small sip. It was pleasantly cool, and the taste was what was to be expected of such a bar, the place was busy enough, but not so busy that you couldn't have a private conversation with those you were with. Jake was content, though he knew the witch beside him was likely going to be anything but.

"So, you were talking to your Dad?"

"Oh, yes, sorry." Jake replied, putting down the glass and trying to remember where he'd got to in his explanation. "I was talking to him about careers. You see, as much fun as my current job is, I think... I'm growing out of it. I mean, professional athlete is all well and good, it pays well, I get more than enough attention from everyone. But, I want... to make a difference. Like we talked about." Jake explained, keeping away from the wizarding words because of the Muggle bar they were in.

"So, I thought I would join the force, so to speak." Jake explained, hoping Mari would keep up with the lack of the word 'Auror' being used. "So, I signed up to start in September." He concluded, grinning at the witch beside him. It was good news, he hoped.

Marilyn rolled her eyes and one corner of her mouth turned up briefly, "Sure you did, Newbury. Whatever helps you sleep at night." she quipped dryly before taking a sip of her sweet drink. Quit a difference from her usual drink- just plain water. The witch crossed her ankles in her seat and continued to sip as he told her aout how his current career wasn't doing it for him. Which reminded her...she'd have to ask him a favor...

"So, I thought I would join the force, so to speak."

Mari's eyes widened, "Really? That's great, Jake, I'm happy for you-" as soon as the words left her mouth she looked surprised at herself. She'd felt a great many things since escaping, none of which she had fully expressed or focused on and none of which had been happiness.
It felt rather uncomfortable, to be honest. So she composed herself and added,
"I am. I'm sure you'll do great. By the way, I realised in training that I will eventually probably fly and..." she cringed slightly in anticipation of the horror that was inevitably to be expected in his reaction, "I've never flown before. So I was wondering if you could teach me."

The surprise on Mari's face at his words made Jake smile. It was nice to see somewhere care like the witch before him did. In a weird way, it was kind of a solidifying action in his decision. If Mari was happy for him, believed he could do it, then he wouldn't back down, not now. "We'll do great together," Jake amended with a smile. "And Mary is going to be joining this year too!"

It would be fun, he decided, being with all his friends at university. Making a difference in the world. It was more... Jake than being a Quidditch star.

The question from the witch's mouth, however, made Jake frown just a little. How could she never have flown in all her years at Salem? But, it needn't have even been a question. "Of course I will!" Jake replied without even having to think about it. "If you can get over to Canada, I can take you to the Moose Jaw training pitch to practice. I'm there until the end of the season and then I'll be with you at university." Jake explained.

Marilyn froze, "Mary...McNeely?" She asked in a smaller voice than before, eyes widened. She hadn't seen Mary since...before. Seeing her would be...hard. Mari had refused to find any of her friends from before and for the first time she thought that Jake perhaps didn't know that he was literally the only friend she had. Waters, now, perhaps, but... She'd been unable to cope with the gaping void between herself now and her life from before. So she simply acted like there had not been a before. Hadn't looked for Gavin, for Mary, anyone.
But that was a topic she did not want to think about. If Mary joined...well she'd not be unhappy. She'd missed the girl, on those moments at two in the morning, awoken by a nightmare, she'd let herself feel a portion of the pain.

"Great, how about this Saturday?" That was a few days away, and she figured the sooner the better. "What's it like, flying?"

With the mention of Mary's full name, Jake nodded. "The very same." He commented with a small smile. He liked Mary, she was hard working, clever, fun to be with, but most importantly, she was someone he could talk to. "I've been helping her train for the past year, so hopefully... hopefully we'll both be up to the mark by the time classes start. Mary definitely will!"

"Can't do Saturday, I have a game. But Sunday I'll be available, if that works for you?" Jake asked. Though of course it would depend on whether the game finished by Sunday, after the last game spanning sixteen hours, it wasn't unlikely. But, hopefully this one would be shorter and he could help Mari with everything she needed.

However, the question made Jake pause for a moment. "Flying is fun... I mean, some people don't like it... It's an adrenaline rush, I suppose. But there's a lot of control needed, agility. You should be fine. And you'll be safe, we have to practice safety manoeuvres at training in case people fall, so I'll catch you no problem." Jake explained, giving her a reassuring smile at the situation.

Marilyn nodded but didn't pursue the topic, not wanting to open that particular pandoras box in her mind.
"And you will. I know it." She reassured him before letting the topic move to flying, "Sunday's good. Maybe I'll come to your game." she suggested
"so I'll catch you no problem."
"I'm sure you will, I just hope it won't be necessary." the witch quipped, sipping more of her drink with a small smile. "Who are you playing against? Is it just a friendly game or for some kind of cup?" Not knowing much about quidditch was one of the few things that certainly hadn't changed from before. But with a quidditch star for a best friend she could try to understand more of it.

"Sunday's good. Maybe I'll come to your game."

Jake paused in that moment, processing what Mari had just said. He'd been playing for almost three years now, and she was the first person to suggest themselves that they would come to his games. It was... oddly comforting that people wanted to come and see him, as opposed to him always asking. "I'd like that." Jake managed once he'd collected himself enough to speak.

The questions made Jake smile. "We're playing Haileybury Hammers this weekend. They're a mid table team, we've already won with two games to go." Jake explained. The Meteorites had trashed the league this season, which meant Jake was on to his second winners trophy in two years. "Should be a good game though, regardless." Jake added, not wanting to deter the witch from coming to see the game. It was a good day out.

"I can get you VIP tickets if you'd prefer to be... around less people." Jake offered, knowing the witch likely wouldn't like the high capacity crowds the stadium boasted.

The witch did smile then at his answer. "Then it's settled. I'm supposed to get out more anyway, and I want to see you play. Two flies with one swat." her fingers pushed her hair out of her face unconsciously, feeling more comfortable with the situation. And so far they hadn't really attracted any attention, which was odd. When a Quidditch Star and the witch famous for breaking out of Guantanamo went to the bar for a drink, well, not only did that sound like the start of a bad joke it also sounded like paparazzi bait waiting to happen.
But that wasn't on Marilyn's mind when she heard his offer. Her mouth opened slightly in surprise, her eyes crinkling with contentment, "That would be..perfect, actually. Can you do that?"

At the question of whether he could get the witch tickets, Jake let out a soft chuckle. "I get two VIP tickets a game. Hardly ever use them to be quite honest, so you're more than welcome to take one, or even both if you want to bring someone with you?"

Honestly, Jake didn't mind either way, it would be nice to know his friends were supporting him once more. It had been quite some time since anyone had come down to see him in action. Lifting his beer to his lips, Jake took a slow drink, savouring the taste once more.

"You're welcome to stay in America... if you want to, I can ask mom to make up Victoria's room for you, for the night?" Jake offered, it would be easier than apparating from England to Canada twice in two days.

"Like whom, one of my thousand admirers?" she chuckled dryly, "You're the only person I really do anything with and I don't exactly have a plus one in my life, so one ticket will be fine." the witch nodded with a dry and amused expression, her fingers grasping her icy drink again and taking another sip, the fresh and fruity taste filling her senses again. Lack of a social life in the romantic aspect was no bother in her life, it was just non-issue and honestly she couldn't understand how finding someone was a priority in peoples lives. She had enough on her plate right now, thank you, if it was an easy thing she wouldn't mind it, but refused to go out looking. Made no sense.
"Only if it's no trouble. And do your parents know I'm..." shegestured to her face and throat, still unable to say anything about it without a distancing defense mechanism like 'Do your parent know I'm disfigured and sound like deaths rattle?' which she knew Jake would not appreciate.

Jake smiled at the witch as she said she didn't have a plus one. "Not yet, no you don't." Jake replied softly. Mari was a very pretty young woman, she was nice, when you got to know her, even if she was a little shifty at times. But one day, she would make a man very happy, Jake was quite sure of that.

The motion Mari made a moment to her face in regards his parents, Jake let out a soft sigh, setting down his glass. "Mari, my parents lived with a disabled child for six years without batting an eyelid at the change. You're no different to Victoria. Something happened that you couldn't control, you're still a person, and they won't judge you. I promise." Jake told the witch. He knew his parents wouldn't care, just as he didn't care.

People were people, their scars and disabilities made no difference.

Mari rolled her eyes, "Yes, sure, of course." She took a sip of her drink, "New Topic, por favor?" The woman drawled, unrated to divulge into a topic that at best made an attempt to make her actually deal with all of her emotions and at worst succeeded in doing so.
At his comment about his parents she nodded, "Alright. Then It'll be fine." Though she was still nervous about meeting his parents... she just...she wasn't good with people. and she had a feeling parents were even harder to do.

As Mari agreed to the whole thing, Jake simply smiled at her. "It'll be fine, besides, we can by pass them most of the time, if that makes it better." He suggested, seeing her unease. It would come with time, being able to deal with people, and Jake knew pushing her too quickly wouldn't help. But these steps. They were definitely going to push them in the right direction.

For the rest of the evening, the duo spoke of trivial things, nothing overly interesting, but a welcome break from the normality of society. Jake felt much better after their meeting, knowing he had a good friend in Mari. It was as the bar began to get less crowded that Jake checked his watch. "We should probably head back to yours. I'll take you home, and leave you to... whatever you do at this time of night." Jake told the witch, getting up from his stool and waiting for her to join him.

He'd take her home, as he always did. Make sure she was home safe, and then leave knowing everything was alright. Jake was many things, many bad things, but he knew that being a gentleman was always something he was going to be able to pride himself on.
