Catching Up (Louis) Empty
PostSubject: Catching Up (Louis)   Catching Up (Louis) EmptyMon Jun 30, 2014 6:27 am

Marilyn had arrived at the University and was looking for a Mr. Louis Clement, she had been told that due to the duration of her rehabilitation and her training under Gwen Cooper she had missed the date to sign up for his class and had been instructed to meet him to discuss catching up what she was missing.
As she waited she vaguely wondered if he had been informed of her full circumstances...the ministry had suggested wearing a glamour to hide the long scar across her face and the thick ones around her neck and shoulders, in addition to a voice charm to hide the croaking rasp that tended to make people uncomfortable, but Marilyn had refused. There was no shame in what she had accomplished and she would not hide the visible and audible reminders of why she wanted to be an auror in the first place.

Louis had had a message in regards to a student who had missed his first set of lessons. The Frenchman had been reluctant to see her, after all it was not his problem that the witch couldn't keep to deadlines. But when the situation was explained a little more, Louis had to admit there were some things that he simply couldn't say no to.

It had been a welcome break, anyway, in the early March morning to get away from the house. More news had arrived from France of his brothers ill health. Letters that only addressed "Miss Sheridan" and made no mention to him. Letters that stated a woman in her position should be home with the man she was supposed to have married many years ago.

The only consolation Louis had found was that Vanessa had softly reminded him that she was right where she was supposed to be. But even as the letter hissed in the fire as it burnt, Louis had still been angry. His family couldn't see the torment this was putting them all through, but eventually they would be on their knees.

Begging.

Shaking that memory away, Louis checked his watch before straightening the paperwork on his desk. A head popped around the door, one of the students he'd roped in to making him a decent cup of tea after the abysmal show from the canteen. She told him about his visitor being here and the Frenchman nodded. The door opened slightly more, but the man didn't look up.

"Miss Caldwell, take a seat, put your papers on the desk for me. Then start by telling me why you want to be an Auror." Louis spoke, getting straight to the point, as always.

Whilst waiting Marilyn closed her eyes, memories flooding her mind. Screams and pleas of countless lost souls rang in her ears, the children and teens she'd gone to school with and had to abandon on that island haunted her day and night. There was no escape. Some newspapers, once they'd squeezed the life out of the "18 year old breaks out of Guantanamo", had begun titles like "Survivors Guilt?" and "Guantanamo Madness", attempting to catch a glimpse of her psyche. So far they had had no luck.
Then a voice calling her name ripped her back to reality.

"Miss Caldwell, take a seat, put your papers on the desk for me. Then start by telling me why you want to be an Auror."

After doing as she was told she took a seat and met the mans gaze, her heavily scarred features betraying little to no emotion.
"Dark Wizards and Witches need to be stopped. I need to do that. Being-" her ruined voice halted as unexpected emotion built up in her, but she swallowed it, "Being in Guantanamo made me realize that there is nothing I want more in the world than to bring Dark Wizards to justice."

"Dark Wizards and Witches need to be stopped. I need to do that. Being-"

The voice that came from the witch was startling, not openly so, but inwardly Louis winced. He'd read the papers at the time of her escape, something he'd made a habit of over breakfast, even though Vanessa told him that she was much more interesting. She was right, for the most part, but the man couldn't quite concede that newspapers were useless.

But as the witch continued, Louis grew accustomed to her tone, and overlooked it.

"And... your version of justice is what, exactly?" Louis asked, not pointing to an answer he wanted, psychology played a huge part in these things, and though the man admired her bravery, they would have to be careful not to take on someone in for a revenge stint, as it were.

Marilyn held his gaze but at his question her gaze dropped.
"...So I suppose you heard I killed those two black widows in my escape."
For a moment she felt her age, but also so, so much older. It was a strange feeling, knowing you had ended a life. But on the other hand, it had been necessary and that knowledge let her sleep even the tiniest bit better.

"I didn't do it out of revenge and I'm not here out of revenge."
in afterthought almost she murmured, "I'm not mad."

"My definition of Justice is putting them in Azkaban. Or Guantanamo. Whatever wizarding court rules."
was her final answer to his question, as she looked back up at him, her left hand absentmindedly tracing the thick scars on her decollté(sp?).

As the witch explained as to why she was here, Louis listened silently. There was no indication given as to whether she'd said the right thing or not, that would come in time. The comment about being mad Louis ignored, there would be enough time in training to establish whether that comment was true or not, and it wasn't his place to confirm or deny it even then.

"Prison is the best case scenario." Louis concluded in her speech. Though Louis' temper flared faster than a raging bull, he was a man of reason when it came to the job. Anger was for after work, but not now. "If you had to kill a man, or woman, could you do that? In a split second? Again?" Louis asked, though he was sure he already knew the answer.

Reaching in to his drawer, Louis took out a small tin and pushed it across the table. "My last class was a variation of using this. Assess it, explain it, use it. If you can do that, I'll put you in to phase two." Louis explained, giving the girl a nod to continue. It couldn't be any worse than the first time around, could it?

"If you had to kill a man, or woman, could you do that? In a split second? Again?"

"Yes." she replied simply.
There was no point in sugar coating it and the witch had no hesitance in her reply, the hesitance that those who had never killed had in their voice.

Then he was pushing a tin towards her and she picked it up, inspecting it. It was a muggle, or at least a non-magic item.

"Camoflauge paint, seemingly non magical, used on skin to help hide in nature without magic, but I could imagine that it is good to have a non magical way to  hide if a destination has magic sensors."
Angling the mirror on the table so she could see her face she dabbed her fingers in the grey paint and applying it to her face,

"it is most helpful to break up the contours of the face by going against the natural forms of the face, which can be tempting because it's easier..." she applied the grey over her lips to hide where they started and ended, along a diagonal across of her chin. Then applying green and red to continue to break up her features, using black to hide the difference between chin and neck and to hide her eyes. It took a few minutes, but soon she had pretty effectively hidden her prominent features.

"Is this sufficient?" she inquired.

There was no surprise in her statement of killing. It was easy when you knew how, but Louis was quite sure the witch before him understood the implications of having a switch. When to know to kill and when to know to imprison. The Frenchman was quite sure that the witch before him was capable, but time would tell, like all things.

When the witch took up the camouflage paint and explained it's non-magical uses, Louis allowed a small smile on his lips. Why could this young woman not have been in his first class? It would have been a welcome breath of air! "You're correct, Miss Caldwell." Louis told her, watching her open the tin and begin to apply the paint.

It didn't take the witch long to fully cover her face, and though not a complicated feat (as Louis had believed before his first class) Marilyn had done well. Her comment as to how she'd done made the man nod for a moment.

"More than sufficient, Caldwell." Louis replied, taking out a slip of paper and scribbling down the location of the next lesson and time. "Here are the details for your next lesson, I look forward to seeing you there. If you don't have any more questions, you're free to go." Louis explained, giving her a small smile.

Internally achknowledging his small smile she continued until she was done with her assignment and he was done with his feedback.
Relieved she'd passed, not that it had been hard, but she was relieved all the same.

"Thank you, Sir."

Waving her wand once to remove the paint on her features, she accepted the paper with a nod and  stood to leave, but paused and opened her mouth to speak, though somewhat hesitently.

"Do you want me to wear a glamour next lesson, Sir?" She did not meet his eyes directly, "On my voice, I mean. Because of the other students."

"Thank you, Sir."

The Frenchman nodded once in acknowledgement of the statement, tidying up some of his papers. He had more than enough reports to do on those who'd failed, and he really didn't want to go back to doing that, not now.

"Do you want me to wear a glamour next lesson, Sir?"

Louis paused, looking up to the woman with a slight look of confusion. "Non." The Frenchman replied with a shake of his head. "Nobody must cover up in my classroom. You are a beautiful young woman, scars merely show the hardships you've faced. More than any of your classmates combined, I should imagine." Louis replied.

"Wear your scars with pride. For only when you accept them will other people see their beauty." Louis explained. It was sad that she would think otherwise, but Louis did not discriminate. Despite his family, his background, what he should do, the man had learnt the best way to deal with people was to deal with them as equals.

"Non."

The young woman was speechless, her eyes flicking up to meet his in shock.

"Wear your scars with pride. For only when you accept them will other people see their beauty."

The young woman was speechless, her eyes flicking up to meet his in shock. That was certainly not what she had expected, but his words filled her with a sense of...relief...comfort? Something unfamiliar. But she knew one feeling amongst the confusion...gratitude

"Yes, Sir." she managed, nodding in respect and then turning out the office.

Well. She certainly had a lot to think about now.
