After Azalea had left, everything in Jake's flat had been auctioned and deposited in to his bank account. With the help of his agent, Jake worked out how much money was Azalea's in the bank account they shared before taking her name out of it and sending her father a letter stating how they'd come to the agreed sum of money, and a cheque for Azalea to bank. As promised, Jake hadn't contacted her, only sent back what was hers.

With the flat sold, Jake had turned his attention to extending his parent's home for them. The building work had been quick with some builders his father knew from work, and now Jake lived up in the loft of the house, in it's own self contained manner. Everything was growing easier with the weeks that went by, Jake missed Azalea, but the reduced stress levels were making him more capable of making decisions for him.

Including the mention of Mari's resistance group.

After lunch that day, Jake had kissed his mom on the cheek in thanks and grabbed his coat. A quick apparation and he was in front of Mari's front door. Knocking lightly, Jake waited for her to answer.

In preparation for fight club Marilyn had her hair tied in a bun tightly and was clad in all black leggings and a tank top under her black cloak. Her hairdo exposed her back and shoulders and the scars were even more visible, but there were also new scars along her body and shoulders. She'd already wrapped her knuckles for the non magical round that always kicked off a meeting. But there was still a bit of time until she'd leave she pondered as she grabbed an apple.
And suddenly there'd been a knock. So she jogged over to the door taking a bite and opened it.
"Jake? Hello," She swallowed and beckoned him in, "What's up, what's happened?" There was no wasting time with Marilyn, she always assumed the worst simply to be prepared. She hadn't recieved an answer to her proposal, but perhaps that was why he was here. So she waited, head tilted and apple in hand, for an explanation.

"Jake? Hello,"

"Hey!" Jake replied coolly, before seeing the worry in her eyes. The questions came a moment later and Jake cracked a small smile. "Chill, Mari, everything is fine!" The young man replied, because in the whole picture, everything was fine. "I thought I just better come and see you is all."

Stepping in to the flat when he was invited, Jake closed the door behind him and wiped his shoes on the mat, not that they were dirty, of course. "Well, actually, I've made my decision on what we spoke about last time." Jake amended, shrugging off his jacket because Mari's flat was nice and warm. "I'll help you in whatever way you need me to. To hell with the consequences, lets save the kids, kick Black Widow ass."

It was brash, it wasn't Jake's normal tone, but he was sick and tired of trying to be overly nice about everything. It could easily have been Victoria who had been kidnapped, and those kids were important. "Where do we start?" Jake asked the witch, looking at her for ideas.

Her stance relaxed when he told her to chill and she exhaled deeply. "Merlin, Jake, what was I supposed to think of you showing up out of the blue. I'm glad to see you though."

"Well, actually, I've made my decision on what we spoke about last time." Jake amended, shrugging off his jacket because Mari's flat was nice and warm. "I'll help you in whatever way you need me to. To hell with the consequences, lets save the kids, kick Black Widow ass." (...) "Where do we start?"

Marilyn's eyes widened a fraction before she narrowed them, "Jake... not that I don't agree with you on the 'Let's do this part' but this is quite a different attitude from last time. What brought on the change? I have to ask, Jake. Are you serious?" she looked wary but she was pleased if he was serious. And she'd know just where to start.

Jake mumbled a soft sorry when she explained why she was worried, he probably should have sent word first. But, he hadn't really thought that far ahead. He had just wanted to get from under his mom's feet for a few hours and this had seemed like the best idea.

"What brought on the change? I have to ask, Jake. Are you serious?"

"Azalea left. The kids need me." Jake replied shortly, he didn't want to talk about it. His parents hadn't pushed him in to talking about the whole situation and he was grateful for it. "So, I can do what I want now, and you're right, we need to do something, because no one else is. I'm here to help you, with whatever needs doing." The summary came, and a nod concluded that he was done.

He probably sounded crazy right now, but Jake had had a lot of thinking time, and hopefully next year he could start again with his life. Do something useful.

Rising Resistance (Mari & Jake) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Rising Resistance (Mari & Jake)   Rising Resistance (Mari & Jake) EmptySun Jul 06, 2014 7:40 am

She listened to the entire explaation, the wariness leaving her otherwise neutral expression as she waited until he was done. Marilyn knew better than to press for details that she honestly didn't want to have. It was his life and had been his relationship. None of her business.
But she did do one thing that was very difficult for her to do, but she felt it was right. She put down her apple, stepped forward and gave him a proper hug, taking a deep breath to make sure she stayed okay while hugging him.

She didn't lose another word on the subject. Instead she grabbed his hand and looked him straight in the eye, "I know just where to start. Trust me." And with that she apparated them to a sidealley in Knockturn Alley. "Follow me and keep close." she pulled up her hood and swiftly walked down the streets leading to a shabby, vacant looking building.
She knocked on the door and an eye slot slid open. "He's with me." she said calmly.
Then the door opened and she motioned for Jake to follow her until finally they were in a large basement that had once been a storage facility. Then she turned to Jake and lowered her hood, "First, you need to train up. I come here once, sometimes twice a week. It's kind of therapy, as well." she ten gestured to some of the people, mostly wizards with a few witches amongst them, "Welcome to Fight Club. There are two rules. 1.Don't talk about Fight Club. 2.No Killing. If someone taps out then they're out. You'll be healed after every fight. There are three types of fights. No magic, magic only and mixed. Usually in that order. Nothing here is personal. There are no limits." she shed her cloak completely. "You'll need to train fighting, all kinds. You'll learn a lot here, I certainly did. Jake, are you okay with this?"

The hug had come as a surprise, Jake knew how the witch was with such things, and didn't want her sympathy. He was okay, a few weeks had passed and the pain was just an echo of what it had been. Nonetheless, Jake hugged the witch back, appreciating the comfort it brought, even if only temporary.

"I know just where to start. Trust me."

Before Jake could even begin to contemplate why he wouldn't trust his fellow Belladonna, the familiar pull of apparation pulled at his naval. With the unexpected pulling, Jake felt, for the first time, sick from the travel. Surprise apparation was not enjoyable, he decided as he took a moment. "Don't do that again!" Jake managed after a moment, shaking his head at the witch. Always with the unexpected.

But even with that, Jake had to hurry after her, shrugging his jacket on until they got to a door. It was all quite surreal, Jake had never been to Knockturn Alley, and he knew instantly that he'd likely never come here again. With a question on his lips as Mari finally stopped, Jake began to ask what they were doing but she was speaking to someone else.

And slipping them through the door in to a... cellar.

Frowning, Jake looked to Mari as she began to quick reel off a tonne of information. How was this going to help them? Jake had never been a fighter, sure, he could duel, but only for protection purposes. And hand to hand combat?

"You'll need to train fighting, all kinds. You'll learn a lot here, I certainly did. Jake, are you okay with this?"

"Mari... I don't... I don't fight." Jake told the witch, there was no shame in his statement, fighting as his mother had always taught him, was for people without morals, Jake had morals. "I can duel, but I don't fight. Like this." He motioned to the people around them, his eyes darting around the many different types of people surrounding them. The whole thing was starting to look... stupid now.

Marilyn raised an eyebrow, "Fine. Stick to the magic duells then. You'll never find a better way to prepare for a battle than here. The Widows will be aiming to kill and these people are grade A duellers here, you can really learn from them. You can leave, watch or duell. Just let me tell you one thing that I learned when I was trying to fight back when they took me off that train. They don't care if you don't like to fight. They're not gonna let us just walk out with the kids, Jake." her wrecked voice was hushed so the others, who were still talking and waiting for more arrivals, wouldn't hear. "Did you think we were gonna storm in and talk them into giving in?"
She looked back to see one guy stepping up, challenging the round, "Look, think here about it, really think. Don't let false holier-than-thou ideas cloud your judgement. I'm gonna take this fight. Don't think we're here for fun. Maybe they are but for me, and you if you want, this is training." Her eyes focused on him as she spoke before she turned and whipped out her wand, "Mixed Fight." Her opponent growled, and she nodded.

"Diffindo!" She slashed out, as they circled each other. He retaliated with a curse that felt like a kick in the gut. Remembering what she'd learned the last week she shot a hex at him that clouded his vision and jumped off a crate nearby, crushing his head from behind with her thighs and flipping him onto the ground, quickly jumping up and away as he tried to grab her legs and shooting spell after spell as he, somewhat dazed, regained most of his vision and hit her with a cutting hex, a long cut appearing where it hit her on the shoulder. So they continued, it wasn't a long fight and it definitly wasn't nearly the most brutal they'd had. But in the end she'd disarmed him and had her wand at his throat, signifying the end of the fight. And some other guy started hashing it out with his neighbor as she let herself be healed, the cuts not even leaving scars this time, though she did have a few bruises. Now to listen to Jake..

"Did you think we were gonna storm in and talk them into giving in?"

"Well, no, I know that, but this..." Jake tried to explain, but the party was getting started and the noise was escalating with the jeers of the crowd. He was out of place, so highly out of place. But Mari had an idea, and he supposed he could try. Defence was Jake's style, not attacking, but he knew oh so well that defence wasn't going to help him win.

Before Jake could go any further though, Mari had gone from his side in to the 'arena' if you could call it that. The Quidditch star watched on, the horror on his face quite evident with each movement that came from the witch he'd arrived with. She was good, no, she was very good. But it wasn't surprising, not from everything she'd achieved.

Biting his lip as he watched the whole thing, Jake could only hope that she would be alright at the end of it. Which, apparently wasn't very long after. She won, and Jake gave her a small clap with the rest of the group, keeping an eye on her opponent as she left the arena, hand on his wand in case he tried anything untoward.

As Mari moved back to his side, Jake managed a small smile, his eyes still alert in their surroundings. "That was... good." Jake whispered to the witch, watching as a rather burly man entered the arena. Everyone seemed to shy away, and Jake couldn't blame them. "I teach defensive magic though, Mari, I have this cover-"

"You." The rumble of a voice reached Jake's ears and he was almost certain he knew who was being spoke to. Cautiously Jake looked up from Mari and the realisation dawned on his face. "Come on, pretty boy, stop hiding behind her skirts. Fight me." The man taunted and Jake shook his head. There were many things Jake was, but crazy was not one of them. However, the crowd had a different idea.

Shrugging off his coat as the mass of people pushed him forward, Jake rolled up his shirt sleeves as best he could. He wasn't dressed for this, but he was not a coward. Even if the man before him was... well, at least one and a half times his size.

"No magic."

As the words left the man's lips, Jake's eyes widened at the prospect. "I... don-"

But before he could even try to explain he didn't know how, Jake was being charged down. The Quidditch star side stepped, his hands moving up in to a boxing kind of stance. He didn't know how to fight, not for a moment, but he could pretend. The second charge was expected, and Jake side stepped, landing a good punch to the other man's face. Though, as Jake readied himself, he did have to shake his hand from the pain of the contact. There was a laugh from the crowd, but Jake paid no attention.

For a while, the duo continued, before circling one another. Large punches were thrown, and Jake could feel the sweat beading down his back. Fighting was a different type of fitness, a fitness he didn't have, and his shirt was making sure to show everyone that. After landing a fair number of punches, Jake's game became more cocky. Almost reverting to his school days. It was a mistake, becoming cocky, he wasn't a fighter, he knew that, but in the heat of the ring... the boy could almost pretend.

An uneven stone in the floor made Jake stumble, taking his eyes off of the opposition as he regained his balance. Mistake. The first punch hit Jake in the jaw, earning a cheer from the crowd that seemed to be swimming already. Blood was evident a moment later, though whether it was his nose or mouth, the man wasn't sure. A number of punches came to his abdomen before he had time to even get back in to the zone of the fight and a moment later the Quidditch star collapsed to the floor, trying to get his breath back.

The kick in the ribs hadn't been expected, however and after tumbling to the side, Jake's eyes were streaming from the pain of it all. Instead of staying down, like he knew he should have, Jake pushed himself to his feet. Mistake one as he didn't know where his opponent was, but a moment later Jake felt the ground hit him once more and everything went very, very black...

Marilyn watched closely as Jake began to fight, hand on wand out of habit. But she knew the rules, it was always one on one. As she watched she saw him become more into it. She didn't hold any expectations in the fight, especially since she knew he was more defense than offense. But with training she knew he could hold his own either way.
And then he was down, the fight was over and the next people started fighting.
She went to where he was carried and assisted in the healing, deciding to mend cuts and wounds before waking him up to spare him the sting. It took ten minutes and then she tapped his forehead gently with her wand, "Ennervate."

"Hey Jake...good fight. Really, he almost never loses, you did well for your first time. How ya feeling?" Marilyn asked, offering a hand to help him up if he wanted to stand. "I helped with the healing, but you might feel a bit sore."

When Jake's eyes fluttered open, he looked around trying to remember where he was until his eyes landed on Mari. She mentioned something about a fight and when he was hauled to his feet he winced slightly at the soreness of his ribs. "Sore." Was his only reply to how he was feeling as he reached up to rub his face. Again, sore.

But no blood, from what he could tell.

"I told you I don't fight." Jake muttered, stretching slightly, lifting his shirt to check his ribs. No bruising or redness, so it would be okay, eventually. "I'm not doing that again." He added a moment later, giving Mari a serious look. Not hand to hand, anyway.

"No more Hand to Hand, Okay. It's not the most important fighting style for you anyway. Stick to perfecting duelling if you want. Speaking of which." She handed him a bottle of water if he wanted to take a drink, watching the fight going on, it was a duell. She observed tactics, not seeing anything new to her yet.

"Want to take me on next round? Magic only or Mixed. Your pick." Marilyn saw the area clearing and stepped into it, wand out and waiting, "Come on, Jake. Show me what you've got. Don't be afraid to hurt me, Nothing's personal." her stance poised to move as soon as he agrees.

Taking a small sip of water, Jake listened to Mari, she spoke of perfecting his duelling, and Jake knew he was already competent at that. You didn't exactly get to being Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher without being competent in the field. "Duelling is fine, believe me." He replied, though it wasn't aggressive, just confidence.

There was barely a moment before Mari stepped in to the ring, calling him in after her, slipping out his wand, Jake stepped inside. "Mixed." He told the witch, a smirk hinting at his features. Twisting his wand in his left hand once, Jake slashed his wand upwards, with a whispered "Stupefy." The jet of red flashed towards the witch before him, but in no means did he let his guard down for a moment.

Marilyn blocked his stunner as she twisted away, flicking her wand out, a stinging hex flying out at him as she moved. This fight was interesting as both were extremely competant duellers, and while Marilyn was the better fighter, it wasn't always easy to land a blow in a mixed fight.
"Diffindo! Relacio!" She didn't expect him to be majorly effected by those, because of his level of experience, but they were still strong spells. Marilyn was glad she had a good grip on defensive magic, using her free hand for a wandless magic shield against most spells sent her way, recast everytime a spell came, concentrating harder than she had all evening, sweat beads gathering at her forehead.
Then she got an idea.
"Avis Oppugno!" she cast and a swarm of birds flew out of her wand, swarming Jake. In the confusion of the swarm she moved quickly, her eyes not once leaving him and she jumped in a kick to the head from the side, quickly rebounding back, landing in a judo roll, wand out in expectation.

The duel heightened quickly, and Jake wasn't surprised for a moment, using both his competence with shield spells and agility from Quidditch the man quite competently kept himself away from the spells. Whether the ones he dodged hit someone in the crowd, Jake didn't check, focused solely on his opponent as he replied with his own array of jinx's. Mainly knock-backs and stunning spells because despite the fact it was a duel, he wasn't going to hurt his friend.

The swarm of birds was off putting, Jake swatted at them, missing them as they flew away. Just in time for Mari's foot to collide with his face. The floor was the next stop and Jake groaned as he pushed himself back up, wand at the ready once more. "Very good, Caldwell." Jake applauded using his sleeve to wipe the blood from his bust lip.

Enough playing nice, he thought to himself.

"Petrificus Totalus!" Jake spoke clearly, moving to his right. "Fumos!" The second filled the room with a smoke screen and Jake moved back to his left. He knew roughly where Mari was, and with a sweeping kick, he felt the contact of two legs. The thud close to him was the sign she'd hit the ground and Jake smiled to himself.

"Gotcha!" He told the witch triumphantly, though, he couldn't see a thing.

"Thanks" She replied, still focusing completely on him. But then she couldn't. She dodged the paralysis spell with her shield, but in the fumes it was impossible to see, she was about to clear them when she felt a foot hit her legs and she was knocked to the floor landing on her butt (ouch that'd be a bruise), luckily hidden in the smoke. She heard his Gotcha and located his rough position by sound  and moved extremely silently, sneaking up behind him with a safe distance and her hand ready to shield, "Eviscerate, incarrcerous, Levicorpus, Obscuro!"She whispered. Eviscerate cleared the smoke as her second spell sent ropes shooting at his extremities. Levicorpus would dangle him in the air by an ankle.  Obscuro, if it hit, would blindfold Jake, giving her an advantage until he got rid of it.

The thing with Jake was he thought that falling your opponent meant you'd won. His small victory put him at ease in that moment, a smile touching his features. A smile, that only lasted a couple of moments before the smoke lifted, ropes shot at him and he was suspended by his foot.

The blindfold was in place only a few moments later, and the clatter of wood on the floor told Jake he'd dropped his wand. He was stuck, and he'd been shown up by a girl. "Okay, okay. You win!" Jake announced before she attacked him from his suspended position. The Black Widows wouldn't give in, of course, but he was defenceless, and one beating was enough for the day.

"I need a lot of practice, I know." Jake added, trying to locate the witch in case she attacked again. His body was tense, waiting for the next blow, hoping that Mari would call it a day. Quite honestly, Jake couldn't do this fight club thing, it wasn't realistic enough for him to fully engage, but he'd tried, for Mari.

He could only hope that was enough for her.

All spells hit, to her pleasure and surprise. "Libracorpus, Finite Incantatum" The Blindfold disappeared and Jake was released from her hold. Marilyn held out a hand to help him up from the ground, "Come on. Enough for you for one night." For once she didn't need to be healed, mainly because Jake had seemed to refuse to hurt her. She gathered her cloak and pulled her hair out if its tie, letting it cover her shoulders again. When they stood outside she looked up at her friend, "Don't take this the wrong way,  I think you're better with making contacts, you're better with people than I am, and teaching some defense to other members and I'll focus on the aggressive fighting and teaching offensive spells. I'm glad you tried this. Maybe you even learned something," her tone turning teasing, "I really am glad you're in this with me. I don't think I could do it alone." with that she meant the resistence. But also her recovery. Her rehabilitation. "You should rest up, Newbury, Until the next time I see you, which I hope will be soon, try to get some people to join up. I'll do the same. "

She lifted the hood of her cloak so as to not attract attention in the Alley and looked back up at him.

When Mari let go of the spells, Jake fell to the floor with a soft "oof". Collecting his wand, Jake moved from the arena with Mari. He wasn't in any way deterred by his lack of results, he'd always known that he wasn't a fighter, and the rules with this thing were hazy at best!

The duo moved back out in to the street, Jake pulling on his jacket and tucking his wand back in to his belt. "No offence taken." Jake replied to her statement. "I work better under pressure, with that kind of thing. You know, if I have to save someone, the consequences of my spells matter less. That... I can't do that." Jake motioned to the door they'd just come out of. Hopefully Mari would understand. Understand that it was the adrenaline that made him capable of taking people down.

"Also, I learnt that you're not to be trusted in a fight." He added, chuckling softly to show he was teasing.

"You should rest up, Newbury, Until the next time I see you, which I hope will be soon, try to get some people to join up. I'll do the same."

"I'll rest up once I've gotten you home." Jake replied, carefully placing his hand on the witch's shoulder and apparating them back to her flat. Chivalry wasn't dead in every man, and at times like this, it was important to make sure your friends and family got home safely. Once the man had caught his balance from apparation, he smiled at Mari. "I'll see you soon, Mari. Stay safe." He told her, before leaving with a soft crack.
