Broken (Azalea) Empty
PostSubject: Broken (Azalea)   Broken (Azalea) EmptyThu May 29, 2014 2:27 am

Exhaustion that could only come from the amount she was feeling slowed down her approach to the castle. After she had emptied her tear ducts, she had remained in the bathroom stall for Merlin knows how long before finally standing up and heading outside. Too tired to do anything else, she had made her way back to Hogwarts, vaguely aware that it was past curfew. At least that, as a prefect, she would have a reason to be out of her dorm, but for some reason, bed was not what was on her mind. Instead, she found herself heading towards the Herbology Greenhouses in the semi-darkness of the fast approaching night. She had heard that Professor Azalea was the one to turn to when students were in need, and although she didn’t know exactly what she was going to tell her, the need for someone to be there was overwhelming.

Normally she would go to her parents whenever she felt down, but this was something she never expected to happen, and going to them did not seem like her best option. She barely recognized what she was doing, her mind far too tired to think or consider what her desire for a caring person was leading her to do. Walking over to the greenhouse, she opened the door and slipped inside. As if on autopilot mode, she made straight towards a bare patch of ground and sat down, hoping that the Herbology Professor would somehow find her here, because she had never been good at approaching people when she needed help.

Broken (Azalea) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Broken (Azalea)   Broken (Azalea) EmptyFri May 30, 2014 6:12 am

Ever since her last trip to the hospital, Azalea had found refuge in her plants, deciding that it was the only way she was going to keep sane. Notes appeared in her flat stations she was in her greenhouse, longer hours were spent at schools and over the days, Azalea could just about muster up the energy to pretend everything was alright at home for the few hours a day she and Jake actually spent together.

It was a result of one of those late nights at Hogwarts that Azalea found herself in the greenhouse, surrounding by a sea of potted Mandrakes. She was supposed to repot them, or so she had planned. It just didn't strike her that she should have done it sooner. And now it was night and students were asleep, not the best of times to unearth screaming plants and cause a racket.

Oh well, the witch figured, not moving from where she sat. Maybe the next day.

It was as Azalea sat quietly in the darkness that she heard footsteps and for a moment, the witch considered reaching for her and before she remembered that it, much like her, was useless.

"Who's there," she called out, a false note of curiosity in her voice. It was amazing how good she was at keeping up the facade, so amazing that for moments at a time, Azalea almost forgot that she was a real person and felt real pain.

As a few moments passed and she started to regret coming here. What was she even going to say? It was best, she decided, if she just went back to her bed and slept - if sleep would come, which she doubted. Too many thoughts were running through her mind, and she knew that trying to get sleep would be a futile effort.

"Who's there?"

Well, too late now, her mind chided as her mouth automatically opened and said, "Brooke, Professor." Manners had been drilled into her so that it showed without having to try too hard, but for once, she couldn't be bothered to stand up. "I know shouldn't be here, I'm sorry," she said softly, her voice tired out from all the crying she had done. "I'll go now," she added, hastily getting to her feet. What was wrong with her, thinking of coming here in the first place?

"I know shouldn't be here, I'm sorry,"

It took a minute to place the voice as that of Brooke Walters, a very unhappy Brooke Walters by the sound of it, and difficult as it was to dredge herself up from the shadows that had been dominating her mind recently, Azalea made an honest effort. A smile was too hard to conjure on her face and the spark in her voice was missing but the witch tried nonetheless.

"I'll go now,"

"It's alright Brooke," Azalea called out, getting to her own feet with considerable effort. Leaving the safety of her vines was not something the witch wanted to do but a student was here. Time to stop being selfish and focus on what really mattered.

"Now that you're here, is there anything I can help with," she asked kindly, walking to the witch and lifting an arm to pat the young Gryffindor on the shoulder. "Are you alright?"

"Now that you're here, is there anything I can help with?

She knew the answer to that one, and she shook her head slowly. No, she thought. There was nothing anyone could do, not unless they could undo the past and change it so that she had never gone to sit by the lake. But there was something that could be done for the moment, not that it would actually do much. "I just need to get away," she whispered, more to herself than her Professor.

"Are you alright?"

"I-" she had begun to automatically say she was fine. Merlin, why couldn't she just tell the truth? Because you don't know; her subconsciousness had supplied the answer, and she turned to look at Azalea. "I don't know," she finally said, echoing the voice in her mind.

"I just need to get away,"

Boy did Azalea ever know how that felt, the need to get away from being yourself for a bit, the wish to step outside and just observe the person who's life was falling apart, revelling in the sensation that it wasn't you. The pain when you found out it actually was you was worth it every time.

"Well, you can stay here as long as you want," Azalea offered to the prefect, gesturing for her to take a seat again. When the witch admitted that she wasn't sure, Azalea nodded.

"Green hair?" she questioned casually, trying to change the topic. "Looks good on you," she added sincerely.

"Well, you can stay here as long as you want,"

Following the motioning of Azalea's hand, Brooke slumped down, glad for the permission. If only her Professor knew exactly how long she wanted to hide out, she might have changed her mind, because Brooke never wanted to leave the warmth of the place. "Thank you," she said half-heartedly, forcing the politeness.

"Green hair? Looks good on you."

She kept silent, not able to being herself to fake more words of gratitude. The green now only reminded her of Josh and what he did, and that only led to the picture of Joe walking away. Closing her eyes, she focused on making her hair pink, and then changing her mind and switched it back to green with a sigh. It didn't matter what colour her hair was, Josh would still come after her, so why in Merlin's name should she keep changing it every single time? Besides, the green she had chosen was the exact colour of the trees she sat under when she met Joe, and it was a reminder of something good. Yet, whenever she thought of Joe, a new pang of guilt hit her, and she blinked back tears. No, she scolded herself, no more crying.

For a moment, she considered what Azalea must have been thinking at the sudden colour changes, but she didn't care. "It's funny what feelings colours can evoke," she scoffed to herself, forgetting that she wasn't alone.

"Thank you,"

Azalea accepted the thanks quietly, seating herself beside the young witch. The science that crept over the two young women in the greenhouse was allowed to fester, Azalea knowing not to push the Gryffindor into anything. If Brooke wanted to talk, the Herboligist would listen, if not, well Azalea could sit with the prefect for as long as was necessary.

The American witch watched the quick morphing of hair colours and styles that Brooke went through, only to settle back on the original green she had started with. Clearly the new look meant something but when the witch remained quiet, Azalea did not probe.

"It's funny what feelings colours can evoke,"

"What's your personal favourite?" the brunette inquired gently.

"What's your personal favourite?"

She jumped slightly at the voice, suddenly remembering where she was, and she blushed, realizing that Azalea had heard her comment. The question, although Brooke was sure meant as a simple thing, caused her even more pain. Purple had to be one of the colours she liked the most, but it had been with the purple hair that Josh first made his intention known. "Blue," she found herself replying. "I like the ocean."

Turing away from the view of her Professor, a few more tears seeped down her face; her tear ducts had been refilled. As tired as she was from crying, she couldn't stop them, and she tried to wipe them away as fast as they came, doing her best not to sniffle or let the older witch next to her know.

"Blue," she found herself replying. "I like the ocean."

Azalea was almost certain there was a slight tremble in the young metamorphmagus' voice, but just to lay any doubts to rest, when the Gryffindor turned away from her, Azalea was sure.

There was no sound, real tears always came silently, real pain always came in the lonely hours and Azalea knew what it felt like.

"I understand," she whispered softly, not coaxing the young girl to reveal anything but reaching out a hand to pat her back soothingly. "And if you want to talk, I'll listen."

"I understand,"

The comforting warmth of the hand on her back was such a difference to the harshness of Josh's act of 'love', that Brooke couldn't help but cry even harder. There were no sounds, only tears, and she found herself leaning towards the older witch. What she was thinking, she didn't know, because she normally wouldn't look for comfort from somebody she didn't know.

"Why would someone intentionally hurt others?" she whispered through the tears, genuinely not sure. "I didn't do anything wrong, so why me?" She knew she wasn't making sense, blurting out whatever came to mind.

Broken (Azalea) Empty
PostSubject: Re: Broken (Azalea)   Broken (Azalea) EmptyMon Jun 09, 2014 3:09 am

The girl's tears thickened, making Azalea even sadder than she had been before. It wasn't fair for children that young to see the world for what it was, but try as she might, kids like Brooke came face to face with the reality of life every day. As the young Gryffindor leaned towards her, Azalea couldn't help but pull the teen into a hug.

"Why would someone intentionally hurt others?"

"I don't know, sweetheart," Azalea admitted softly, holding the child to her. Brooke may have been only a few years younger than the Herbologist herself but in that instant, she looked so much smaller, so much more fragile.

"I didn't do anything wrong, so why me?"

It as the age old question, why good things happened to bad people and vice versa. Shaking her head, Azalea continued to soothe the prefect. "Unfortunately, I've learned that bad things always happen to the best people in the world," she said carefully. "And you must be one hell of a great person for something to have made you this sad."

As she felt her Professor's arms around her, she tensed for a second before relaxing into the hug. Try as she might, she could not stop the tears, and they just kept coming, spilling out like someone had forgotten to turn off the tap in her.

She heard Azalea's answer, unable to reply, because she couldn't think of anything to say. Nobody knows, she thought, reaching up to wipe away a tear that had gotten stuck on the bridge of her nose.

"And you must be one hell of a great person for something to have made you this sad."

The words didn't do much other than confuse her even more. "There has to be something I did," she whispered. "And... I mean... It's just..." she trailed off, the threats of hurting her family echoing in her mind. She was not capable of comprehending people hurting others for no reason. "There has to be," she repeated, slightly louder.

PostSubject: Re: Broken (Azalea)   Broken (Azalea) EmptyTue Jun 10, 2014 5:29 am

"There has to be something I did,"

Azalea could understand the Gryffindor's dilemma, the ultimate belief that bad things happened because you did something to deserve them. And while the thought was harmful in ways clearly on display, it also maintained the young's faith that good resulted in good things happening. Azalea had never quite figured out if it was worth breaking their trust in the fairness of evil to destroy their faith in the good too.

So the witch remained quiet, offering silent support to the crying girl in her arms. "You know Brooke," she said softly. "Its the easiest thing in the world to sit around and wonder why bad things happen to us. Untold people every day succumb to the way instead of just accepting it and moving on," she explained, trying to phrase her sentences correctly.

"Not that its their fault, coming to terms with what happens is a very difficult thing to do... But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try."

She listened to the words offered by the Herbology Professor, understanding but not really able to internalize it. All she could see was the face of Joe as he had handed the flowers to Josh and before he had walked away... The look of betrayal and hurt and grief. And she had been the one to cause it all!

"I know," she whispered, her voice wavering. She stopped, not knowing how to continue, or how to voice what she was thinking. How could she admit that she just wanted to curl up in a ball and hide forever? Or that she still, despite everything, wanted to go out with Joe? Or that the need to protect Tristan was clashing with her feelings of Joe and she didn't know what to do? She wouldn't, couldn't, even begin to express how she felt.

So, with a deep breath, she repeated, "I know," determined to mean it. Maybe if she could convince Azalea she was going to be okay, she might, just possibly, start to believe it herself.
