Kira was back at Hogwarts after getting a good rest over the summer. Even though she loved sitting around all day, not doing anything, she loved being busy more and she was glad she was back. Her first lesson back was with her youngest students and she had something nice planned for them.

She was standing next to a big cage filled with brown and grey birds, waiting for the kids to arrive.

Natasha had decided to take Care of Magical Creatures because she thought it'd be really cool to take. She made her way towards the area where they would meet for class, happy to finally be back at school and being able to learn. She reached the area, and the first thing she noticed were the brown and grey birds in the cage. She gathered she'd be learning about those today. "Hi Professor," she greeted "Did you have a good summer?"

Violet chose to take Care of Magical Creatures, and while it wasn't her favourite class, it was still alright. Interesting enough. She walked toward the area, and saw the birds before she saw the Ravenclaw girl and the Professor already there. At least she wasn't late or anything. She walked over to them and set her bag down "Hi," she murmured.

Skye walked down the lawn to magical creatures. He notice the big birds and the two other students. Stretching out on the ground he smiled, his hair streaked blonde and looked up at the professor.
"Hello professor, how're you?"

Kira smiled at the first student to arrive. "Hello, Miss Stonem. I did, thank you. I hope you did, as well?" It was actually very nice, to converse with her students, instead of just teaching them. Most of them were lovely and interesting to talk to.

"Hello, Miss Lynch, Mister Summers. I'm very well, thank you, and yourself?"

The witch waited a few more minutes and when nobody else showed up, she figured she could start the lesson. She turned to the three pupils and gestured to the cage next to her.

"Does anybody recognizes these birds? If it's any help, Muggles know them as Dodo. Well, knew them."

Skye studied the birds. From his experience in the muggle world he knew rumors of the dodo bird, but had never actually seen them. He also thought they were extinct.
"Uh, muggles think they have been extinct since the ice age, that they were extremely dumb, and that they couldn't fly. There is a popular movie that portrays them as foolish things that other animals make fun of as well," looking at the real things Skye continues, "I don't really know much about them actually,"

"Hello, Miss Lynch, Mister Summers. I'm very well, thank you, and yourself?"

"I'm alright," she shrugged a little. She listened to the introduction of the class, and Professor Reid posing her question. Summers answered first, before Violet could. Dodos, she'd heard of them. She, like all the other muggles had thought them extinct "Let me guess, they're actually still alive in the wizarding world because, surprise! they actually have brains. Because I thought they died out because they just wandered over to the hunters who killed them, that's what my grandma always used to tell me,"

Kira suppressed a chuckle at Violet's answer, but she let herself grin. It was quite amusing, how the young witch appeared to say whatever was on her mind.

"You're both correct, 5 points to each. Your grandmother, Miss Lynch, however, was incorrect. Dodos didn't approach the hunters to get killed, they vanished. They have the ability to disappear at will and, well, the Muggles thought they've hunted the birds to extinction. This lead to hunting laws and awareness, which is a good thing and that's why the wizarding authorities didn't see fit to tell the Muggles the Dodos, or the Diricawls, as we call them, are still alive." Kira explained and stopped herself from going on a rant about the hunting laws. In her opinion, they should have been stated earlier and be more strict, in both Muggle and Wizarding society.

"As it happens, the Diricawls often suffer from mites. Luckily, the solution is quite easy, there is a spell called Minuta Evanesco. You need to check the birds for mites by gently spreading their wings apart so you can see the skin. If you see any mites, you just flick your wand sharply and say the incantation. This part is easy. However, you have to get them to trust you first." Kira smiled. "I've put up an Anti-Apparition jinx on the cage, so they can't vanish, but once they're out, they will be able to disappear. So, you have to calm them down, make them trust you. Good luck." The Professor said and with a flick of her wand, she unlocked the doors to the cage.

Skye listened closely and when the cage was opened, slowly approached the birds. He didn't know how to make them trust him, but he figured slow and steady at least wouldn't freak them out.
He held a hand out towards one, carefully approaching until he could gently rest a hand on it's head. It flapped it's wings and Skye jumped back, them gently petted it's head, just letting the animal get used to him.
After a bit, Skye slowly moved the feathers and looked for a mite. Seeing one, he tried the spell. It didn't work.
He tried again, and the mite flew off, cheering silently to himself Skye continued working with his bird.

Violet listened to what she needed to do, knowing for her the task was going to be difficult. She wasn't good with animals, other than snakes. And that was only because she could speak to them. She watched as Professor Reid let them out of their cage, and looked at the other Hufflepuff boy to see his approach. She decided to make her way over to one of the birds slowly and knelt down beside it. She saw that the bird seemed weary of her, but she needed to get the marks, so she gently and delicately reached out to search through its feathers. With each mite she found, she murmured the spell and it flew off. Surprisingly, her gentleness didn't waiver and she got all the mites off the bird.

Ooh great! Natasha loved animals! She knew the task would be excellent! And now she had a chance to show off her skills a bit. She saw the Hufflepuffs start with theirs, both succeeding first go. She saw one bird wandering around and walked over to it, trying to give the feel that she wasn't a threat. Unfortunately for her, when she got close, it poofed. Disappeared into thin air. Not being disheartened, she tried again with another one, this time walking slower, and crouching down so she was on the birds level. She carefully reached out to pet its head. This bird didn't seem phased, so she went on searching through its feathers for mites and using the spell Professor Reid gave them to get rid of them.

Kira watched the three students work and was very pleased to see they were all doing well. She loved lessons like this, where nobody hurt the animals, fainted, or was being mean. When they were all done and the lesson was coming to a close, she coughed to get their attention.

"Well done, everybody, thank you for you cooperation." The Professor grinned at them. "That's all for today and there's no homework. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the week."

When they were gone, Kira gently moved the animals back in the cage and then levitated it to the Groundskeeper cabin. She needed to look them all over and make sure they don't have any mites left before setting them free in the Forrest.
