Quidditch Trials for Beater (Josh and Lucy) Empty
PostSubject: Quidditch Trials for Beater (Josh and Lucy)   Quidditch Trials for Beater (Josh and Lucy) EmptyThu May 15, 2014 8:34 am

Lucy decided that she should try for the Quidditch Team. Over the holidays, her sister had helped her learn to fly her broom, and had given her some tips in playing the game. Though, unlike her sister, she didn't want to be a Chaser. She found the position of Beater much more attractive. She supposed it was because she felt that it allowed her to be of more use. She couldn't imagine her being a Keeper, or a Chaser. No, she found being a Beater would use her skills more adequately than the other positions.

She waited at the Quidditch Pitch for the team Captain, Josh Murray to rock up. Lucy didn't particularly like the boy (after the incident in Herbology last year, she didn't trust him as far as she could throw him) but she'd put up with him if it meant a chance to be able to play quidditch.

After the barrage of Gryffindor in the opening game, Josh had found some weak links in his team. The people hadn't known it at the time, but after the game, Josh had opened up trials for people to start taking up the position.

One of those positions was Beater and only one candidate had come forwards. Lucy Waters. Josh didn't really have an opinion on the witch, not that he generally acted on opinions of anyone around him. Moving down to the pitch, Josh moved to the girl, the Quidditch box levitating behind him.

"Waters. I trust you're not going to waste my time today?" Josh asked, looking her over. She certainly wasn't the build for a Beater but if she thought she had what it took to become one, he would at least give her a chance. "So, without hanging around, get on your broom. Give me a lap of the pitch. Weave the goal posts, vary your height, I want to see your broom control, and speed."

Lucy watched as Josh approached her on the pitch.

"Waters. I trust you're not going to waste my time today?"

"You seem to have such little faith," she replied in her usual, playful tone "Don't worry Murray, I wouldn't dream of wasting your precious time," she added. She listened to Josh instruct her on what to do and mounted her broom "Easy," she said. She kicked off from the ground and began her lap around the field. She made sure to distinctly vary her height, from very low to very high, making the transitions quick and swift. As she reached the posts, she weaved through them, even circling one fully to really show off a bit.

"You seem to have such little faith," she replied in her usual, playful tone "Don't worry Murray, I wouldn't dream of wasting your precious time,"

Playful, cheery tones were not welcome on Josh's team, he was more interested in seriousness which would lead his team to win the Quidditch Cup. Again. The Slytherin Captain merely scowled at the witch for her cheeriness, perhaps she would sober up when the Bludgers were aimed at her head.

As the witch kicked off, muttering something about the task being easy, Josh watched on with his usual icy gaze, not being impressed by anything he'd seen so far. But, at least the witch had the decency to try everything he asked of her. When she'd finally finished her lap, Josh merely nodded to show he'd seen enough, bending down to grab a Beater's bat and throwing it towards the girl to catch.

"You've done this before, I assume?" Josh asked, hoping he wouldn't have to go from the very basics.

She noted the scowl the boy had given her and resisted the urge to roll her eyes. She thought the boy far too serious. And if he expected her to be in anyway like him, besides wearing the same green and silver uniforms, he was wrong.

After she had finished, she flew back to Josh, so she was still a few inches from the ground to get further instructions from him. She caught the beater's bat in her left hand as he tossed it to her.

"You've done this before, I assume?"

"Practised a couple of times with my sister." she replied "Nothing 'professional', but c'mon, would I try out if I thought I sucked?" she said to him.

As the girl caught the bat with her left hand, Josh noted this information silently. That was an edge they'd never had before, and the Captain found he liked the idea. An ambidextrous pairing they would make, likely capable of causing more destruction than before.

"Nothing 'professional', but c'mon, would I try out if I thought I sucked?"

"You'd be surprised." Josh replied, he'd had far too many time wasters over the year. Without another word, the older Slytherin turned towards the box of Quidditch balls and gave it a kick, watching it spring in to action. With only two of them on the pitch, the magically enhanced balls were going to be coming at her very quickly.

"If you don't end up in the Hospital Wing by the end of this, you're on the team." Josh announced, giving a Bludger a mighty whack before flicking his wand and levitating up some targets for her to hit. They were moving of course, but Lucy would have to concentrate on two Bludgers at once, because if any came near him, they would always be redirected in to her path.

"You'd be surprised."

She considered the statement for a moment and shrugged a little. Of course people thought they were good at things and turned out to be crap. But she'd had assurance from her sister, and she trusted Scarlett's judgement. She wasn't that egotistical that she couldn't tell when she needed to improve things.

She waited as Josh got the bludgers ready to aim at her.

"If you don't end up in the Hospital Wing by the end of this, you're on the team."

"That's reassuring," she murmured. And with that, Josh levitated the moving targets and whacked the bludger. They were coming at her quickly, as were the targets moving. And she needed to focus. She saw a bludger headed in her direction and took a huge swing with the bat, hitting it as hard as she could, aiming for one of the targets that were moving past. It hit the target, not right in the middle as she had intended, but just to the right.

She decided to start moving herself, making sure to try as best she could to avoid being hit. Once, she had one fly dangerously past her face, and another had slammed into her shoulder, definitely bruising. She was thankful it was her right as opposed to her left. She kept going, aiming her hits to the targets, and becoming accustomed to the movements, beginning to enjoy it greatly.

As the witch took to the skies, Josh paused for a moment to watch the first hit. Strong enough for a girl, and the accuracy was close enough. Not perfect, but that was already showing to be a promising sign. A few weeks at training and this witch could be useful.

As Josh mounted his broom and kicked off from the ground, he noted a Bludger smash in to Lucy's shoulder, and a smirk touched his lips as he hit the same Bludger back at her. After all, being a Beater didn't mean you were immune to attacks on your person.

The smile on the younger Slytherin's face showed she was enjoying the whole experience too much though, and Josh didn't like that notion, not yet. Taking out his wand, the Captain sped up the targets for her to hit, she would have to work harder now, and he expected each target to be knocked over from brute force before they were done.

"You're not supposed to enjoy it, Waters!" Josh called, smashing a Bludger at the witch's head as it rounded on him.

She noticed that the targets started to speed up. She had expected him to make it harder for her. She knew it wouldn't be easy, yet she was still willing. She ducked as the bludger was sent flying back to her.

"You're not supposed to enjoy it, Waters!"

She smashed the bludger he'd sent to her head to another target, as hard as she could "You realise that, for the most part, people are better at things they enjoy, right?" she called back to him. She really shouldn't've taken her attention away, because she felt another bludger thump into the side of her stomach, sending her broom spinning until she regained control of it. 'Right' she told herself 'Just ignore him and hit the targets'. She gripped her broom tightly, ignoring the pain in her shoulder and stomach, slouching to soothe (slightly, only slightly) the pain as she whacked more bludgers, some missing, some hitting those faster targets. The ones that hit were the hard ones. And through the pain, she made sure to still look like she was enjoying it, just to spite him.

"You realise that, for the most part, people are better at things they enjoy, right?"

Indeed, Josh thought to himself as a second Bludger hit the witch through her lack of concentration. Honestly, being one of only four people on the pitch that were allowed to hit the Bludgers, you'd have thought the witch would have been using the bat to shield herself. But, then, he wouldn't be so amused with the whole thing if she wasn't getting hurt.

As time slowly ticked past, Josh could see that the targets were slowly going down, which showed this witch had potential. Josh thumped every Bludger that came his way in Lucy's direction to keep her on her toes, circling around but ultimately keeping an eye on her.

After about half an hour of battering the Bludgers around, and noticing the way Lucy was carrying an injury, Josh had one last plan on his agenda. Bruised ribs were painful to mere mortals most of the time, but working out on bruised ribs. A sinister smirk touched Josh's lips as he exploded the Bludgers mid flight.

"To the ground, Waters. You owe me your fitness test. Two laps of the pitch, fifty sit ups, repeat twice." Josh called, making sure maximum pressure was put on her ribs.

"To the ground, Waters. You owe me your fitness test. Two laps of the pitch, fifty sit ups, repeat twice."

She resisted the urge to swear. Her ribs were paining her, and felt like they were throbbing, and now he wanted her to run and then do sit ups. "Aye aye Captain," she muttered and landed. Tossing her broom to the side, she immediately began to jog. With each step, there seemed to be a wave of pain radiating from the spot she was hit. She held her hand over the spot firmly as she pushed on to complete the laps, and didn't focus on the pain, staring straight ahead. When she'd finished, she dropped to the ground and started with the sit ups. Oh boy did she hate him for that.

As Lucy made it to the floor, Josh lowered himself just after her, watching as she began the lap, already holding her side from the Bludger. The small pained expression that met her features with each step was only more satisfying to Josh. He would like to see the witch enjoy herself now, Josh reflected. Dropping his bat to the ground, Josh went and sat on the Quidditch box, waiting for her to make his way to him.

As the witch moved back to him, laying out on the floor, Josh watched her ready herself. "I will count you. Hands on your head. Lets go." He commanded, waiting for her to begin.

She reluctantly moved her hand away from the bruised rib, glaring at him, and placed both hands behind her head "Righto captain," she muttered and she started her crunches, making a conscious effort to keep her feet on the ground and to really work her core. With each one there was a burst of pain, but she kept pushing herself to the limits, gritting her teeth and keeping up a fast pace, to get it over with.

As the witch set to work on the fifty crunches, Josh counted each one carefully, making his numbering clear. Lucy was not going to miss even one sit up, and by now, she probably knew that. Noting the slight reluctance in her stance at being told to mover her hand away from her injury, Josh only smirked.

A small grimace came with each movement, making this only the more satisfying.

"Fourty nine... Fifty. Up you get, Waters. Around the pitch and back to me. If you're still standing." The last was said with a knowing look. She was hurting, both of them knew that, and it was merely a matter of time.

"Fourty nine... Fifty. Up you get, Waters. Around the pitch and back to me. If you're still standing."

"Still standing," she said in a strained voice as she got back to her feet. Around the pitch. Hopefully that'd be it. Hopefully she'd make her energy last. She started to jog again around the pitch, her rib felt like it was getting worse. It was the consistent movement and lack of ice, she reckoned. It just kept paining, even more with the impact of her running. She felt that she had begun to perspire quite a lot (thankfully) as it cooled her face as she ran, continuing to pump her legs that were beginning to feel tired.

As the younger Slytherin got up, Josh only smirked as she could barely repeat the words before she was off running again. Josh gave her the second set of sit ups, maximum, before she threw up. But, if it happened sooner, the captain would not complain.

As the witch moved off, Josh could see all the evident signs of discomfort in the witch. It was a satisfactory expression that touched Lucy's features, and Josh couldn't help but goad her further. "Come on, Waters. You're slowing, is this too much for you?" Josh chided across the pitch, not needing to raise his voice much for it to carry. She would hear, above all the pain, she would hear.

"Come on, Waters. You're slowing, is this too much for you?"

"This?" she pushed herself faster, "Nothing," but she was breathless. She could feel the heat from the exertion in her face (she flushed easily as it was) and the sweat dripping from her forehead. She finished the second set of laps, which took longer to complete than the first, before she dropped, to repeat again the sit-ups. Now, she wasn't even trying to keep up a cheerful attitude of any sort. Josh was an absolute nightmare. She placed her hands behind her head, her ribs aching, and started to do the sit-ups, quite a bit slower than before.

Josh watched as Lucy finished the lap, trying to wave away the pain, she wasn't fooling him though, of course, he could see all of it. Even as she tried to hide it. When the witch led down to start her sit ups again the pace was much slower than before. Josh counted the sit ups just as slowly as she moved, a sinister smirk touching her lips as she finally got to fifty in a record slow time.

"Looks like you managed to get yourself a place." Josh told the witch, standing up and moving to her side. Lifting his foot to the witch's ribs, Josh slowly put pressure on her wound. "Training is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Five o'clock." Josh told the witch, pressing down just a little bit harder to make sure the damage was well and truly done. His team were ruthless, and that wasn't going to change for Lucy.

"Get yourself to the hospital wing." Josh commanded, turning his back on her and collecting her things without looking back. Whether she got back to the castle without blacking out was not his problem.

As she finished the sit-ups, clearly exhausted, she went to get up. Though Josh was already standing over her, telling her she'd managed herself a place on the team. She felt herself smile in relief, glad that her running herself ragged wasn't just some waste of time. That was until she felt him press his foot to her bruised rib, slowly and painfully "Son of a-" she began quickly, but she was cut off as he had started to talk

"Training is Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Five o'clock."

She nodded, biting on her lip to try and distract from the pain he was causing, unsuccessfully. Her face contorted as he pressed down harder and she let out a sharp cry of pain. He began to head back to the castle and she sat up slowly, clutching her tender ribs and glaring at the boy's receding figure, cursing under her breath in attempt to quell the throbbing. He'd made it a whole lot worse. She staggered to her feet, legs feeling like jelly from all the running she'd pushed herself to do and grabbed her broom before slowly making her way back to the castle, and to the Hospital Wing.
