PostSubject: DADA - Lesson 1 (Years 6 & 7)   DADA - Lesson 1 (Years 6 & 7) EmptyThu May 01, 2014 7:00 am

The idea of taking over Professor Finn had been presented to Jake in a letter from both schools. Apparently they deemed him capable of teaching the lesson and Jake had been more than willing to accept the role. It had been Azalea who'd helpfully pointed out that he simply wouldn't been able to juggle four days of teaching on top of his Quidditch career, so Jake had had to make a big decision on what he wanted to do.

And the answer came to him almost a moment later.

Defence Against the Dark Arts had been so much more fun to learn about, so he'd written back to the schools, asking them to transfer his job choice. Which left Jake ready for his lessons in Defence at the beginning of the year.

Nervous didn't cut it as Jake fiddled with his tie as he waited for the students to arrive. This was a big step up, but like Azalea kept telling him, he could do it. Continuing with Professor Finn's ideas, there were no tables or chairs in the classroom save his own, plenty of space to practice.

Now to simply wait for the lesson ahead of him.

Behind him on the board featured his semi legible handwriting, stating the words "Patronus".

The news of new professors always came early in the year, and the new signing of the flying professor to being a Defence professor was likely the biggest mix up Professor Holmes had made. But, reserving the judgement for a moment, Josh simply made his way to the lesson.

Everything seemed to be the way Professor Finn had left it, save for the fact now a suited man stood before them, instead of a well dressed woman. Nerves were in evidence of the professor, which was only going to make him more fun to play with, but Josh decided he would wait for more people first.

Take notes before dealing the killed blow.

"Professor." Josh acknowledged, dropping his bag at the side of the room and moving to the middle of the class to see what they would have in store. Dementors by the looks of things, Josh couldn't decide whether this was good or bad. But it seemed the professor was going in at the deep end to start with, and Josh liked the idea of a challenge.

With a slight hop in his step Jacoby made his way through the castle to what was without a doubt his favorite class. While not strictly his best subject, for some reason it was the most fun to him and he looked forward to whatever the professor had in mind to teach them today. He walked into the class room and acknowledged the presence of his fellow Slytherin before taking a second glance at the Professor. He'd been expecting Professor Finn, but was not at all disappointed by who seemed to be her replacement.

The man looked terribly familiar, but Jacoby could not place where he might of seen him before. In typical JC fashion he strolled up to the man and flashed a bright smile. "Good morning Professor, name's Jacoby. Jacoby Pendra--I mean Windsor. And may I say that I am looking ever so forward to your lessons this year?"

The brunette walked into DADA and was a little confused on why the flying Professor was teaching the class but October wasn't going to ask. October waited to see what would happen with this lesson, usually this class was successful and she always heard all the praise and October did show up to learn the lessons, but October wasn't sure how this Professor would do, he wasn't Professor Finn but that should be okay... right?

Mavis took her god old time walking to DADA, she was hoping to get there late but then again she never had her way sometimes. While Mavis was walking to the classroom, she was hoping that Professor Finn didn't do a boring lesson, which is why when she entered the classroom and saw Jake there aka the Flying Professor, she was confused as hell. Mavis scoffed and walked into the room and didn't bother to greet anyone.

This first day of classes seemed to be going quite well for Joe, he realised as he walked into his defense classroom and put slid his bag towards the edge of the room with a polite smile at the professor. He recognised him instantly; a quidditch player, their... Quidditch teacher? If Joe remembered correctly, he was also the man who had carried Azalea back to Hogwarts after something had apparently happened in the Ministry of Magic. Joe had a sneaky suspicion that Azalea and Mr Newbury had something between them, but he had never asked her through fear of sounding rude and intrusive.

"Hello Professor," the Hufflepuff said, looking at the man with shy liking. He seemed nervous, and for what Joe couldn't quite understand. He'd taught before, the boy knew that. But he guessed he wasn't quite used to the formal classroom environment just yet. "I-I'm Joe." That damn stutter he thought, trying to keep the grimace of his face. Just as it'd gone...

"Professor."

"Morning, Josh." Jake replied, giving the Slytherin a friendly smile just before the next student entered the room. Another Slytherin, from the tie around his neck, and pretty straight forward from the words that came from him mouth.

"Good morning Professor, name's Jacoby. Jacoby Pendra--I mean Windsor. And may I say that I am looking ever so forward to your lessons this year?"

"Good morning, it's nice to meet you Jacoby. And you may, I am thoroughly looking forward to teaching this year." Jake replied, it was nice to be met with such enthusiasm, some things were dying in students, but it seemed this boy was not that person. Another student entered soon after, a Hufflepuff. "Good morning, October!"

Mavis Benrik next, who scoffed and made herself scarce. "Morning to you too, Mavis. Ah, Joe, I've heard a lot about you my friend!" Jake replied to the slightly frightened Hufflepuff who entered last.

"Okay ladies and gentlemen, lets get class rolling. Today we will be studying the Patronus charm, I have been informed you have studied it before in Charms, though you only tried to create a Patronus, as part of Defence Against the Dark Arts, I shall teach you to fight against the creatures that Patronus' are most useful for. That said, lets see who knows their stuff. Anyone who knows any information, please supply one fact about the Patronus Charm, anything you can think of!"

"Morning, Josh."

The all together overly obnoxious tones of the American accent were going to make this class difficult at best. Jake's accent was a million miles away from his Azalea's, and Josh wasn't sure he liked it. But this class was supposedly a building block in his career path, so Josh waited. As if this was going to make any difference to his capabilities.

"Anyone who knows any information, please supply one fact about the Patronus Charm, anything you can think of!"

"The Patronus Charm is a charm that uses memories of a... nature that makes the caster feel positive inside to create a shield." Josh supplied with his usual disinterest in the class, barely looking at the professor as he waited to see what other answers would be supplied by the group.

Jacoby gave the man a final smile and made his way over to where he normally stood during class,by the windows. As the man began the lesson he paid rapt attention. He'd always been incredibly interested in learning the Patronus. For once he was ready with an answer when asked, though he has to wait until Josh had finished his own. When the blonde was Done speaking he made his own answer known.

"The Patronus the caster summoms takes the form of an animal of some sort. It's rarely the same between two people." He gazed around the room making arbitrary guesses in his mind of what everyone's Patronus would be.

The words heard a lot about you made him think for a while. His first thought was Azalea; both of them probably attended Salem together and he guessed that she may have said setting about him at some point. The boy smiled at his professor anyway and returned back to the rest of the group with his mind buzzing.

"A patronus charm can either take the form of a shield, known as a non-corporeal patronus, or stronger charms, corporeal, which usually take the form of the animal that represents it's caster or has an emotional link with the caster." He was almost reciting his textbook, Joe knew that, but he couldn't help it.

Summers were boring, and if reading was all he could do to escape his family, he was going to do it.

As three answers came in, Jake smiled warmly at each of the boys in turn. "Correct you all are! Take five points each for your houses for your answers. Yes, the Patronus works on memories and can take on various forms, either animal or otherwise. It is used to keep Dementors at bay as well as for sending messages to friends and family, or even foes if we want to. For today we will be practicing on the first application of the spell."

Moving towards the back of the room, Jake tapped on a trunk that was keeping their test subject from inflicting any sadness on the room. "Okay everyone, we have one Dementor and all of you to get through. Who wants to have a go first? Also, please don't panic, if you're struggling, I will intervene before any harm will come to you." Jake assured them, looking around for the first person to have a go.

OOC Note: Students have permission to GM Jake opening the trunk for them only. If you get in trouble, I shall rectify in my own post. Have fun, and remember to be realistic in your capabilities!

"Okay everyone, we have one Dementor and all of you to get through. Who wants to have a go first? Also, please don't panic, if you're struggling, I will intervene before any harm will come to you."

Joe regretted his decision to step forward the moment he had done so, and his heart started pounding out of his chest. It's proving a point he assured himself, shaking slightly, but then his mind started to race, screaming at him what point do you even have to prove, idiot?! It was too late to back down, though, he knew that. Smiling weakly at the man before him, he drew his wand, letting Professor Newbury know that he was ready.

But as soon as the box was opened and Azalea's friend stepped aside, Joe found himself locked with fear. He knew the theory off by heart; a circular motion with the wand and the words to come out of his mouth. "Ex-... Expecto-..." he tried, but his whole body was shaking nervously and he found himself coming out in a cold sweat. Happy thoughts Joe reminded himself, rolling his shoulders to try again.

"Expecto Patronum," he said weakly, trying to think of the laughter that he and Morgan had shared in her waking life, but he soon realised that thanks to Josh, the memories would always be tainted. "Expecto-..." the Hufflepuff tried again, but he knew what was going to happen the moment it started.

The world around him went cold as his knees buckled beneath him, the last sounds he heard before his head hitting the floor being those of Morgan's strangled cries that he had heard once and vowed to never hear again...

Thana walked in to DADA late, expecting a ..DADA teacher, not...Jake..her flying teacher. She looked around, noticing the board said...Patronus. Thana immediately knew she was doomed, she hid at the back. Making sure she wasn't seen. She avoided the first few questions, then Jake told them they were going to have a go. Thana knew she was definitely screwed. She made her mind up, there was no way that Jake could make her do the Patronus spell. It wasn't because she thought she was too good to do it, nothing like that actually. Quite the opposite, Thana had a problem. She didn't have any happy memories, she never had a nice childhood. And the childhood she did have she couldn't tell anyone. Thana watched the others, she would have to find a way out until the Patronus lessons were over. She sat quietly at the back, feeling more and more sick with each passing minute.

As the first volunteer stepped forward, Jake smiled warmly at the Hufflepuff boy. "Well done, Joe, takes a big man to come up first!" Jake encouraged the boy, sensing the boy was a little frightened at that moment. But there was absolutely no reason for him to be frightened, this was a safe environment to learn.

Or so Jake hoped.

Opening the trunk, Jake watched the Dementor glide out towards the Hufflepuff, slowly the boy's wand moved, trying to show courage. Find a happy memory...

But Joe was struggling and Jake began to move forward. You have to let them experience the whole thing, just intervene when it's absolutely necessary. A voice told him, waiting a moment longer. As Joe's body began to give in to the Dementor, Jake's Patronus leapt from the tip of his wand. The Labrador retriever hurried round to protect Joe, but the boy was already falling.

As soon as the Dementor was locked safely in it's box, Jake sent his Patronus to the hospital wing, calling the nurse. Five minutes later, Joe's unconscious form had left the room, but not before the nurse had insisted to the whole class that he was going to be alright.

Jake took a moment to collect himself before he turned back to the class. "Mr Astrid has shown us that even the bravest of men can fall foe to the Dementor's power. I should hope everyone noticed the chill in the air around them? This is why we need a very powerful memory to defend ourselves from the creatures.

"Everybody please take a moment to really think about what your memory is, and then can I have another volunteer?"

October watched what was going on around her and sighed a bit. She knew that eventually it would be her turn and when Jake asked for a volunteer who had a good memory, the Hufflepuff tried to think of one that would be strong enough for this lesson. When October finally had a good and strong memory, October raised her hand a bit. "I can volunteer" she answered him.

"I can volunteer"

As the Hufflepuff stepped forwards, Jake nodded to her in encouragement. "Please go ahead, October, and good luck!" Jake replied, flicking his wand to the box which allowed the Dementor to rise in to the classroom once more.

Now it was just time to wait for the witch to conquer her fears.

OOC Note: You didn't need to wait for me to do this, permission to GM was given in an earlier post. It still holds up for future posts in this class.

October nodded and waited for Jake to open the trunk, when the dementor came out of the trunk, October thought back to all the happy times she had with Hercales and how tragic it was that he was gone, that was the happiest she has ever been, he brought out so much good in her and when with him she wasn't Bipolar and he didn't see her as that, he saw her as the woman he loved. "Expecto Patronum" October watched as her patronus flew out of her wand and hit the dementor, thinking about her one true love was always a good memory or memories. October watched as the dementor was put back into the trunk and October gave a half smile at Jake before walking back to her spot off to the side and away from people.

As the Hufflepuff readied herself, Jake watched with curiosity. It didn't take long for the girl to ready herself, and as soon as she was, Jake opened the trunk. The Dementor moved forwards and October took her time, but eventually the Patronus came in to view.

And the Dementor was vanquished.

"A patronus with no form, everyone take note, that whilst some Patronuses do take the form of animals, not all will. It is dependant on the strength of the spell and the mannerisms of the caster." He explained.

"Now, who would like to go next?" Jake asked, looking for the next volunteer.

PostSubject: Re: DADA - Lesson 1 (Years 6 & 7)   DADA - Lesson 1 (Years 6 & 7) EmptyThu May 08, 2014 11:31 pm

Rhian cursed inwardly. It wasn't enough that this school year was off to a rocky start - what with no word from Tess, or Conner for that manner, over the holidays - but now she was late to one of her favorite classes. When she finally reached the third floor, and the large wooden door between her and the class, she heard a man's voice on the other side. Who...? Not bothering to waste more time, she gently pushed it open enough to slip in and close it quietly.

When she was able to set her bag down close to the door, she noticed it was Jake. Her luck seemed to be turning just a bit. A smile played at her lips at the idea of her old housemate being her professor, something that she had finally gotten used to in flying. The happiness didn't last long, though, as she heard other students speaking up. Something about happy memories, and...Oh, no...

Dementors.

In one sudden, breath-stealing moment, she wished to whatever was out there that she hadn't pushed Tess away. Cause she needed her strength, her support...badly. Watching the other students, most practically strangers to her, taking their turns, her feelings were mixed. While she had never known Joe to be outwardly courageous, she didn't know him personally. Who knew what battles other people had to face in their own lives?

Watching the others go, and being relatively successful, she figured she may as well try, since she was here. As she waved her had to show she would go next, she walked over the the trunk and Jake tentatively. "Hey," she greeted him. That was about all she could muster, her nerves wreaking havoc enough. She positioned herself, trying to recall happy memories...

Meeting Tess on the hill that first day...Watching her first movie with Conner...A funny sort of tingling she got at times, moving around the castle...The comfort of knowing Tess would be safe...

She had thought, in the midst of them all, that she was ready, so she'd nodded to Jake. It wasn't until the creature started moving towards her, and that last memory crept up, that she knew she was done for. Visions of that day, the blood...so much blood... the pain, shooting through her shoulder, scarring the skin. There was no screaming, because there hadn't been, even then. She had quietly sunk into oblivion, hoping she would wake eventually. Happy, at least, to know Tess would be safe.

It must not have been long, her being blacked out, because she came to on the hard wooden floor of the classroom. "What..."

"Hey,"

Lateness wasn't an issue to Jake, but manners were, and seeing as Rhian didn't apologise for her lateness, Jake's back was slightly up. Merlin knew a "sorry" didn't take much. But Jake noted the slightly... less enthusiastic nature of the witch, and was slightly worried.

But she attempted the whole ordeal, and just as she began to fall, Jake stepped in. His patronus chased the animal back in to the trunk and Jake hurried to the Gryffindor's side, summoning one of the chocolate wands that Azalea had pressed in to his hands for the lesson.

"Here, eat this." Jake insisted, pressing the chocolate in to her hands. "It'll help." He insisted, lifting the witch out of the way. "If you want another go in a bit, you can." He assured her, before heading back to the trunk. "Anybody else wish to give it a go. Strong, happy memories."

Each time a new person tried the spell and the Dementor came out, Thana got more and more scared. She moved to the back and was trying not to panic, each time the Dementor came it she felt worse and worse. She stayed at the back and watched as the girl, October did a good job. Thana felt a sense of pride, that was obviously a girl who was happy even if she wasn't from her house. She felt glad that someone was strong enough to take it on, only because Thana knew she couldn't be. She kept hiding at the back, trying not to be sick.

As three people tried the spell, two failing miserably and the third not even managing something of substance, Josh moved to the front of the class. His cold gaze meeting the professors for a moment before he commanded the trunk to be open. The professor seemed to think about bulking over the way he was spoken to, before he complied with Josh's wishes.

As the Dementor rose from the trunk, the Slytherin took out his wand, readying it for a moment. The idea of happy memories was ridiculous to him. The confusion between a strong memory and a happy memory had been lost on so many people, but Josh knew. And he knew precisely what he needed to think about.

Azalea Harrington sinking in to the Black Lake, submerging herself as she perused the banks for plants she needed for class.

Azalea Harrington's smile as she spoke about class in such an animated manner.

The way she had tasted in the one instance his lips had brushed against hers.

How perfectly her body had fit in to his hands as he'd pretended to slip in Herbology. How well he'd memorised the size of the professor...

"Expecto Patronum!" Josh called out confidently, watching the strong light emanate from his wand and hurry towards the Dementor. Unlike the first time he'd tried his Patronus, this time it formed completely in the exact replica of Azalea Harrington's vines, combating the Dementor back in to the trunk it was being kept.

With a content smirk, Josh moved back towards his bag. He'd stay until the end to see the rest of these idiots try, but he knew a standard had been set now.

As Josh Murray stepped forward, Jake bristled slightly at the tone of voice, but gathered if either of them could have the last laugh, it would be him when he picked the boy off the ground when he fainted. It wasn't professional, Jake knew, but so long as it stayed in his head, did it really matter?

As the Slytherin completed the spell with relative ease, Jake clapped the boy. "Well done, Josh, a very good display." The professor encouraged, because it had been nothing short of impressive. "Okay ladies and gentlemen, lets see what the rest of you have got. Everyone should give it a shot, it's a good experience!" Jake encouraged, waiting for the next person to give it a go.

Thana watched Josh complete the task, surprised that he had done so well. "He must have some happy memories" Thana thought to herself. She kept feeling worse and worse, having a Dementor so close was affecting her. Each time it came out she had flashbacks, of things she had tried to forget. The cell, the cold. The sadness. She hated it, so when Professor Jake told them they each should have a go, she almost walked out. She didn't however, she stayed and watched the others. Still trying not to be seen.

DADA - Lesson 1 (Years 6 & 7) Empty

Jacoby had hung around in the back of the class watching each of his classmates go up one after the other. Under normal circumstances the boy would have jumped at the opportunity to experience something like this, but if he was being totally honest with himself he was afraid. Not afraid of the dementors after all Jacoby had lived with his aunt, the concept of the joy being sucked out of him wasn't anything new, what frightened him was the idea of failure. He wasn't sure he had any memories happy enough to summoun a patronus. Despite all the bluster and bravado that JC carried himself he knew deep down that he was a lonely sad individual.

He had almost resigned to giving up and sitting the lesson out when the door opened and Rhian walked into the class late. Rhian...his sister. He didn't know if their father had approached her or not, but he knew and suddenly the weird connection he'd felt to the girl last year made sense. Their blood was calling out to each other recognizing the bond that the pair hadn't even known of themselves. As he watched her step up to face the dementor he felt a sense of pride in her, and when he saw her struggling he had to fight back the protective surge that welled up inside him. He wanted to hurry to her side and help her, but Jake was already giving her chocolate.

After Josh Murray took his turn with the monster JC stepped up to face it himself. As the trunk opened JC focused not on the feeling of happiness he'd experienced in the past but rather the outstanding hope he had for the future. A happy family with his father and sister. A boyfriend that he actually cared about. The thought of being loved and loving in return. Legitimate friends he could depend on. Each thought brought a surge of emotion through the young Slytherin even as the dementor started to sap his joy.

Wand pointed up directly at the shadow figure Jacoby called out firmly, "Expecto Patronum!" The silver mist that emerged from his wand soon took a solid form, that of a large bear that ferociously batted at the demontor until its advance towards Jacoby was abated. Panting Jacoby fell back and landed on his ass giving a grin over in the direction of Rhian and sending the Gryffindor a slight wave.
