Personality: Mari is a deeply unhappy person with a dry sense of humor, quick wit and charm to make up for it. Though she will flatout lie about how she feels, simply because she wishes not to burden anyone else. She's sweet, but unsatisfied and wants something to happen in her life, she's got a lot of ambition and nowhere to put it. She's been known to get into difficult situation due to curiosity or boredom and is a very passionate person, albeit rather frustrated, too. She goes by Mari usually and has a weakness for heart shaped candy. A hopeless romantic like her mother, though she can do just as well on her own. Always has, but she never had to, what with her sisters as company.

Background: Adopted the halfblood family Ramirez-Caldwell Marilyn was raised with love and care by her two Mothers, taught to appriciate individuality. ~~Her older sisters, also adopted, Zoey and Nora are her closest friends and the three always advise each other when needed.~~ With eleven she got her letter, as hoped, and went to Salem, though both her sisters went to Hogwarts, ecause of their british Mother Faith. Since her adopted sisters had since moved out the family moved from Mexico City to Salem. She's always been a literature geek, but is also interested in theater and arts, a passion her mother Mona encouraged throughout the years by enrolling her in summer classes for whatever art seems most interesting at the time.

Family Background: Faith and Mona adopted Mari when she was one year old after having moved from London to Mexico City. Mona had met Faith whilst on vacation in England and the two had married after five years of dating, they moved after being married for two years. Mona's parents had been a muggle and a wizard of whom the muggle mothr had long before passed away, she had no siblings. Faith's parents Gwen and Evan were supportive of everything their daughter did and though they missed having her around, they understood the move and visit every other christmas (the other christmas's the family visited in england). Faith has a little brother whom the girls know as Uncle Jamie.

AFTER GUANTANAMO:
After being abducted off the train home after graduation Marilyn spent a year in solitude in Guantanamo Bay, her experiences were so horrific that she refuses to tell anyone all of it. She is the only person to have ever escaped Guantanamo Bay. The night she escaped she killed three dark wizards. She never regretted it, despite the knowledge that killing tore the soul. She changed in many ways after that.

General appearance:

Hair Color/Style: dark brown curls, that reach to the small of her back, much like Bellatrix Lestrange's hair

Special Features: pierced ears, a scar extending from her left temple over her cheekbone down to her jawline. Multiple scars along her shoulders, back and neck. Her voice was damaged during captivity, from screaming so long, and is permanantly smokey, husky and hoarse making her even creepier than she already now is. And a naval piercing from the her grandmother that is enchanted to enhance magic and physical strength.

Personality:
Marilyn has a very twisted sense of Justice sometimes, having no qualms killing dark wizards. However, as she knows, there are punishments worse than Death.
Marilyn respects Death, having been confronted on a Daily basis for a year, not to mention her grandmother, though adopted, is Gwen Cooper, Head Huntress of the fiercest Hunters clan of all. And Gwen works closely with Death and has often shared in trade secrets with her granddaughter.

Marilyn has no other mission in life other than catching dark wizards and making them pay. And she doesn't need anything else. She has few friends and prefers to keep it that way. She doesn't trust many people either. Anybody, really, not fully. She trusts Jake more than any other 'friend' because he was there without being asked and he helped her. The only two people in the world she truly trusts are her Grandparents the Caldwells and well, not trusting two of the most dangerous people in the magic world would just be foolish. As for now she's in training to be an Auror and has completed extra training under Gwen's tutorage.

UPDATE: After surgery Marilyn's voice has been restored to full normality. Herpsychotherapy has helped her become more herself, but mostly with help of her live-in boyfriend; Jake Newbury.

She never likes crowds or big events or parties. Especially after the ball.

Though she never acknowledges or admits it, Marilyn’s nicknames are kind of special to her. Gwen and Evan call her Lynnie, her Abuelo Felipe calls her Maritza and her Uncle Jamie calls her Darling.
With Gwen and Evan the nickname reminds her of the many childhood memories she enjoyed with them and it makes her feel safe.

‘Maritza’ makes her feel accepted and understood, because her Abuelo has always accepted her and he understands her, seeing as he had been a prisoner in the Second Wizarding War and he just made her feel like she wasn’t losing her mind, even before abduction when she’d be out on the roof of his home in Mexico City, dreaming about adventure and the stars he’d just join her with a hot chocolate and tell her about her grandmother and how she used to do the same thing and he’d reassure her that just because they weren’t blood did not mean they weren’t family.

And Jamie has always had a bit of a drinking problem and a drug problem; it had cost him a lot. Him and his sister didn’t really talk (only fight), but he’d always come to visit his nieces and she was the only one he’d call ‘Darling’, no matter if it was a good day and he was sober and playing gobstones with her, laughing when he let her win saying “You got me, Darling.”
or if it had been a bad day and he was alone in the kitchen after Faith had stormed out yelling at him and Marilyn had snuck down to see her uncle and he had red eyes and a small voice, but he’d give her the crooked smile he’d gotten from his Father and say “Don’t worry, Darling, everything’s alright.” He just always called her Darling.

After her escape he’d tried to see her, but she was all but hiding and after finding out that his sister, her wife and two other daughters had relocated to New Zealand, effectively abandoning Marilyn, he’d started looking harder until he’d found her, thanks to his parents asking her if she wanted to see him and Marilyn agreeing. He sometimes stayed at the apartment if he had a fight with his live-in girlfriend Clarissa, who was a Healer at Mungo’s and a very nice witch, but they fought about his addiction constantly.

It wasn’t like her sisters were bad people they were just, different. Growing up the twins and Marilyn had been polar opposites in all respects. The Twins were identical, English, blonde haired, Grey-eyed and trouble making. They’d been partners in crime in all things mischief. Marilyn had been dreamy, dark and quiet. Nora and Zooey (also known as No and Zo) did care about Marilyn and would listen to her thoughts and wouldn’t prank her (they wouldn’t dare, once they had Marilyn had been so mad she’d accidently magic-ed their hair off and their mum had had to fix it. Since that they didn’t mess with her). They were quite a bit older than Marilyn and thus were technically the ‘first grandchildren’ but they couldn’t really connect with their all of grandparents well. Abuelo Felipe was a sharp-tongued softy but also a no-nonsense softy who didn’t think much of their mischievous ways and thus they didn’t quite connect.

Evan, who had enjoyed pranking in his time, was amused by it and adored all three girls equally, therefore having difficulties at first with Marilyn. She was such a quiet child that he’d simply not known what to do with her at first. It was only when she was around five that he’d realized what she was truly like. He had mistaken her quietness for meekness, when really she was full of spunk and smart-ass comments. She just chose her moments wisely and carefully, dropping lines at sporadic times in a way that he recognized in himself. After that he’d begin to talk more to her as well and not mainly her sisters.

The newly given attention to Marilyn didn’t bother the twins, who already knew how sharp-tongued their little sister could be. It just meant that Marilyn would speak a bit more, which wasn’t a bad thing, in fact they encouraged it, partially because it was hilarious to see a small child talk back to grown adults that way and partially because it was mischievous in a way that they could enjoy without getting in trouble for. The Twins were also on good terms with their Grandmother Gwen; however they could not deeply connect with her. The twins had chosen Hogwarts, which was where Evan had gone, and he’d been ecstatic, whereas Marilyn chose Salem for two reasons. 1) Her Abuelo had gone to Salem and 2) Her sisters had not. This wasn’t because she didn’t like them, she loved them. But she was always “No and Zo’s little sister’ everywhere she went and she wanted to make her own Legacy.

After Marilyn had been abducted the Twins had been inconsolable. For all they knew their little sister was being killed as they slept (which they didn’t for ages). The entire Family was a wreck. Faith tried to troop on, but Mona didn’t get out of bed for months, just crying all the time, refusing to see anyone except Faith. While Faith was completely overwhelmed, grieving, yet not having the time to grieve, because her daughters- two of her daughters, needed their mum and she had to give them that.

Gwen and Evan disappeared for six months immediately after receiving the news (Gwen and Evan had summoned every Huntress in the country to scour out any information, but had been unsuccessful every try until she’d gotten so fucking frustrated that she set a forest on fire. After six months they’d been forced to stop searching, having exhausted all their sources except for the ones that were dark, dark magic. But Evan prevented her from using those. They wouldn’t have helped, not truly.)

When they’d returned they found their daughter on the brink of a nervous breakdown, her wife unreachable and their two remaining grandchildren at a loss. Felipe had been helping Faith, trying to get the family on its feet, knowing what loss felt like and that one had to keep living. Jamie had gone on a yearlong drinking spree, unable to face his sister after her loss.

But then Marilyn escaped and it was incomprehensible. They’d all but proclaimed her dead and there she was. But she also wasn’t. It wasn’t the same Marilyn and realistically they knew that wasn’t possible for her to not change. But this scarred, spooked and resigned creature...refusing to speak let alone dream...this seemed worse. Doctors assured them that she would be fine, that she’d learn to cope with her experiences if they just gave her love and support but the shock weighed so heavy that his words fell on deaf ears.

While still in the hospital Marilyn, almost unconscious from medication, had heard Mona mutter, “When I see her like this...I wish she were dead.” Then she’d lost consciousness again. But she remembered.

Faith’s greatest weakness had always been Mona. So when Mona began to act like their living, breathing daughter was dead she resigned. She simply couldn’t bear it anymore, couldn’t look at her daughters face, flinched when she heard her voice, and couldn’t stand to touch her. Mona just acted like Marilyn wasn’t there. Like she was a bad dream and if she pretended Mari wasn’t there then she wouldn’t be. Felipe was appalled. He screamed and shouted at his daughter, but it made no difference, so he left back to Mexico to cool off, but in that night Marilyn left, accepted the ministry protection, the flat in England, all of it, just to get away.

Gwen and Evan reacted similarly to Felipe, but knew that Faith was no longer capable of supporting her daughter, so they took over Marilyn’s care, signing ministry protection documents, helping to cast the charms over her flat, visiting her when she let them, but unable to tell anyone where she was unless she allowed it.

Nora and Zooey were utterly overwhelmed at the thought of what Marilyn had gone through. What she had done to escape. That she had killed. The twins couldn’t accept this new Marilyn as their sister. Every time they smiled or laughed they were hit with guilt, every visit was torture for them- and then they remembered what else torture was and were hit with the guilt and shame all over again. Adding that to how their parents were reacting, all the disharmony; Jamie still gone, the Caldwell’s absolving their daughter of her parental obligations, Abuelo cutting ties with his daughter...their family was ruined. And all of it led back to Mari. They felt guilty for how relieved they were when they learned she’d left and that they were all moving to New Zealand. A fresh start.

Meanwhile Marilyn suffered alone, abandoned by almost everyone she’d loved, and in the midst of it all none of them had asked how she felt about any of it. But that was where Jake stepped in.

Marilyn's Birth Parents

Alma Montez

Raphael Montez

When the squib Raphael and muggle Alma realized that they were pregnant they felt torn. Of course, being as in love and happily married as they were, despite their Young Age of twenty-one, a child Born of their love was welcomed warmly. But they were in a dodgy area of town, in the heart of poverty, Alma being Born in it and Raphael shunned by his Family at a Young Age for being a squib. They knew realistically that they couldn't possibly provide a promising future for their daughter, but they tried. The first six months they tried, but the couple knew they couldn't provide for her, for their beloved Baby Girl whom they adored so, so much already. Alma sang to her every night, Raphael told her stories of old and new. The two reveled in their bündle of joy. It broke their heart the day they had to give her to the Hospital nearest to them, not even leaving her Name, wanting her to begin with a clean slate.
What they couldn't have known was that their luck was about to Change. Months passed and at the end of the year, five months after giving her up to Adoption, Raphael started a steady Job and Alma was soon promoted from a generic secretary at a budding firm, to Assistent floor Manager. Their life became stable and grew on ist new foundation. Giddy at the prospect of providing a life after all they rushed to the Hospital to Claim their daughter only to find she'd been adopted.
It was like losing her all over again. True, they could try to find her, but she'd be nearly one now, she'd be adjusted. They didn't want to selfishly rip her from her new home.
And so they left their Information at the Hospital should she ever want it and had to be Content with simply lighting a candle on her birthday every year in the small room in their new home that they kept for her, never losing hope that someday perhaps she would return.
That candle burned every year, December fifth, for their lovely daughter; Sofía Valeria Montez.

Character Development Drabbles: One Word Prompts

Patronus
It was no surprise to Marilyn right after she’d escaped, that she could no longer cast a Patronus. It was no surprise to anyone, really. But when she’d mentioned it to Jake, nearly a year after her escape, he’d just replied that he’d help her out. He was a DADA teacher after all, he’d said, he knew she could do it. Especially since she’d used to be able to cast a corporal one.

So they tried, they tried for weeks, but every old memory Mari had was tainted with darkness. So Jake suggested she try a different memory, demonstrating his again for her. A golden Lab sprang out of his wand at his command and Marilyn bit her lip, trying to focus, but with Jake looking at her so encouraging…She took a deep breath and cast the spell again. A furry wisp popped out slowly forming…a Newfoundland dog…?

Marilyn was so surprised she dropped the spell. Her Patronus had been a lioness… unless…’oh mierde’ she whispered before looking at Jake, who was utterly oblivious as to why her Patronus had changed, since he hadn’t know her old one and was now grinning at her, congratulating her, but she wasn’t really listening.
Just mentally slapping herself.

Clubbing
Marilyn had tried, she really had. But she simply could not go clubbing. There were too many people on too little space in crappy lighting and music that tried to make you deaf. Not to mention that instead of flashing club lights she saw curses flying and instead of party-goers she saw the other witches and wizards that had been captured with her, standing crowded until picked off for cells or punishments. Her therapist had said that with her level of PTSD it was very likely that some things would never go away or get better.

Clubbing was one of those things that would never work. When Jake had once tried to invite her out to a Club she’d dropped her glass in shock and just shook her head, repairing the glass and leaving the room to calm down. Obviously he’d gone after her and she’d explained it along with an apology and an assurance that she was totally fine with him going, she just couldn’t go.

Flowers
Marilyn’s fave flowers are Magnolias and when Day of the Dead comes around she always goes to her grandmother’s grave with Felipe and their Mexican family friends. And they make sugar skulls and he cooks her grandmother’s fave food and they put all that on the grave and Marilyn always buys a ton of magnolias for the grave and Felipe’s house. When she and Jake had started datingand her grandfather had resumed contact again she invited him to join and ‘introduced’ him to her grandmother.

Marilyn's adopted Grandparents

Evan Caldwell- Retired Auror, one of the best in his time, counted as one of the most dangerous wizards if his Anger is aroused. Sarcastic, quick-witted and sharp-tongued with all but his wife and family. Comes from an old pureblood family.

Gwenevere Caldwell- Retired Huntress (basically an Auror specializing in magical beings and creatures). Still one of the most dangerous and capable witches in the wizarding world. Retired head of the Cooper Huntress' a Salem based group that is usually lead by the female head of a family, it would have been Faith but she refused so it went to Gwen's Cousin instead. Recieved an Order of Merlin, third class for her work towards protecting the wizarding world.
