Full Name: Rhian Nicole Kael

Age: N/A
Country of Origin: United States
Current Home: London
General appearance: Petite build, Agile, Blue-green eyes, Brown hair
Special Features: N/A
Blood purity: Pure-blood

Personality: Before attending Salem, Rhian had learned to be independent from her family. In spite of her parents’ examples, she loves her sister fiercely and took saw it as her job to take care of the younger girl. When she began school, it was hard for her to open up to other people, but she eventually made friends. She enjoys artistic outlets of any kind, though she rarely shares them with those she is not close with. While she is nervous about attending a new school, a part of her in intrigued by the new adventure.

Background: Rhian and her little sister, Elena, grew up in a very tense household. Their family was the traditional pure-blood family, with strict values and little outward affection. Rhian’s parents were both sorted as Nightshades, as had most of their family since as far back as they could remember. So, when Rhian was sorted into Belladonna their already distant relationship turned even more so, her parents turning their attention to Elena. Unfortunately for them, Rhian knew without a doubt that she would be a Wormwood. For the past few years, she has tried to shelter Elena from their parents, giving her all the love a support that she could.
At the beginning of her third year her parents were murdered in their home while Elena was at a friends’ house. When Rhian quickly returned home, they were sent an owl by an unknown uncle who lived in London, stating that they would be coming to live with them.
They were surprised to be greeted by a surly old man who lived in a worn down home. After a month though, Rhian came to the understanding that, although rough on the edges, he was very fond of little Elena. It made leaving her there to start at Hogwarts a little easier. Thrown into an unknown situation, Rhian can simply hope for the best.

Rhian Kael Empty
PostSubject: Re: Rhian Kael   Rhian Kael EmptyMon Jul 29, 2013 10:44 pm

Finally being released from her last class of the day, Rhian gathered her things and waited until most of the foot traffic had died down to leave. While she really didn't mind getting lost in the crowd, today was a particularly hard day. At breakfast she'd had to listen to most of the students in her house talking about their summer plans. Seeing their family. Trips they would take. The general wonderfulness of it all.

Rhian, to her credit, hadn't let the emotions show on her face. She wondered sometimes if that was really a good thing, to be able to hide them like this. It seemed to make them sharper, more lethal. But what else could she do? Run up and down the isles, screaming? No. She had to act normal. Act...

Her feet found their own way to her dorm at the top of the castle. Through the portrait, she saw very few students, the warm weather of late spring calling to them. Her heart felt heavier each step she took. This was becoming an everyday feeling, but today was worse than usual. To add to the ache in her heart that had increasingly turned into numbness, the stormy weather made her shoulder hurt something fierce.

As she made her way into her dorm, she let her bag fall from her shoulder to land heavily by her trunk. Opening that slowly, she pulled out a few things and made her way to the bathroom. Something about showers had always soothed her, and she needed that feeling desperately right now. She turned the tap to a low warmth and shed her clothes. At first, she simply stood under the running water, not bothering with her usual routine. But that was when the tears came.

Leaning with her back against the tiled wall, she let the tears come that had been waiting like a ghost at the back of her mind. She didn't even know anymore who she cried for. She thought she'd dealt with her parents' deaths, but with everything else that's happened, it's as if it ripped the band-aid off that wound as well. Part of her still wanted to hate them for how they'd treated her. But the other part, the small voice that whispered at the back of her mind that she was now an orphan, wondered if it would have gotten better over time.

But now she would never know. She'd never be able to find out the story between her father and her uncle, why they'd the girls had never even heard of him until their parents' deaths. She would never be able to thank him for taking them in. For leaving them that potion.

Rhian's knees gave out as she pictured Elena. Her body sank to the bottom of the tub, her arms winding their way around her knees as her head fell forward. The water raining down on her was a welcome relief. She didn't have to really acknowledge each tear that fell, as it joined the rest of the water.

Elena. She'd been everything perfect in Rhian's life. She'd been her rock, by simply being there. The little blonde hadn't been particularly strong, physically or emotionally, but her innocence had gotten Rhian through more times than she could think. She'd given her purpose, when she had none. She'd given her a reason to keep going back to that suffocating manor every summer. She'd been the reason she kept fighting. Fighting to prove that you didn't have to be a Nightshade to make a name for yourself.

But that light was gone now. And she didn't even know what had really happened. Rhian's mind had blocked out what it had seen in that moment, turning it into a portrait of red, with no faces or details. She didn't know what they'd suffered, in those last moments. She didn't know if her little sister had called her name. If she'd thought of Rhian at all.

The tears were flowing now. She could feel the warmth contrasting with the cooling water from the shower head. It was just as well, the swell of emotions was draining her more than she had been when she'd gotten in. Standing on shaky legs, she turned off the shower and grabbed a towel. She opened the door to the dorm and saw no one had come back yet. Gratefully she grabbed her things and walked out to her bed, content to simply lay down on the comforter, her wet hair soaking through the pillow.

The pain was still there. It was always there. Except on those nights when she just couldn't sit in the dark anymore. She'd been able to test her limits, going two, sometimes three days without really sleeping, simply starring into space with the curtains drawn around her fourposter bed. But some nights she just couldn't stay awake. Those were the nights she took the Sleeping Draught.

She'd gotten some from the hospital wing when she'd woken her dorm mates that first night, her throat raw from screaming and scratches down her arms and across the wound at her collarbone. The healer had given her a few nights worth of the stuff, figuring she would need it quite often. What she didn't account for was Rhian's want...no, need to stay awake. To keep those dreams at bay.

An hour passed, her eyes cataloging each inconsistency in the fabric above her bed. She usually would wander outside, or through the halls this time of evening, but she couldn't bare to move. No one would be around for a while, and her mind was restless. A whisper in the deep recesses started forming an idea.

Following that voice, without looking back, she reached into her bedside table and pulled out one of the vials. The liquid swirled lazily, like so much syrup. Not letting herself over think this, she uncorked it and tipped back her head. The liquid wasn't particularly warm, but as it settled into her stomach, and pleasant warmth spread to her extremities. As her eyes closed heavily, she had enough time for one last thought.

Definitely need to do this more often...

Changed For the Better

Rhian sat in front of the large mirror, starring at the physical reminder of the worst year of her life. The white hair, let loose from the intricate braids she normally spelled them into, fell well past her shoulders, shining in the crisp white light. If she was honest with herself, as she was trying to be more and more as of late, she’d grown rather fond of the color. It pulled out the color of her eyes in a way that her regular brunette hadn’t.

But, in the end, it was too heavy of a weight to bear. Tomorrow her and Tess would be going back to Hogwarts. Back to real life, to school, to classes, to other students. Back to Conner. No. She couldn’t think about that. About all of the ‘what if’s’ that came with those thoughts.

She leaned down to rummage in her bag for the phial. Touching the cold glass sent a shiver down her spine. She idly wondered when she would no long react in such a way. Frowning, she set it on the makeup counter and picked up a pair of sharp scissors. Her hand moved to the base of her scalp, pulling a few strands of hair forward, some that would never really be noticed. After a few times through with a brush, she lined up the strands and snipped off a few inches, placing them down on a small handkerchief.

While she wanted to be rid of this constant reminder, she never wanted to forget. Forget what had happened, all that she’d lost. And…all that she’d gained. Holmes, she smiled. She may still be the Kael orphan, in truth, but now she had a new family. A strange sort of one, since Myce was her legal father, and Tess would technically be her aunt. Giggling slightly to herself, she realized again that none of that mattered one bit. She had them, and they her, and that was all that mattered.

Done with the scissors, she uncorked the phial and took a deep breath. One last look in the mirror, at the girl she was leaving behind. And she was. Leaving it all behind. Because she’d be damned if she would rot away like she almost had. She couldn’t do that to Tess, and to Myce, and to the memory of Elena. No. She had to live for them. And not only live, but thrive. Steeling her nerve, she drank down the purple liquid in one swig.

It was cool and thick, tasting like too sweet candy and something almost chemical. She felt it warm in her stomach, spreading out into her system. She’d chosen this one because it was permanent. There were simpler ones, less expensive ways to change hair temporarily. Even a spell. But those weren’t enough. She was deciding, now, that from now on it would be different. Better. Her eyes closed as she felt her scalp warm as well.

Taking measured breaths, trying to stay calm and let the magic work, she counted out the minutes. Tentatively, she opened her eyes, even wider when she saw the results. She couldn’t help the slow grin that spread across her face in a way it hadn’t in a long time.

It was like seeing an old friend again, the girl in the mirror. The girl who protected her sister. Who didn’t care what people thought, her parents, kids at the new school, none of them. The one who met a boy in the kitchens. Who fell for a muggleborn in spite of everything. The girl…who could pull through this.

As a small laugh escaped her throat, she heard the door open and saw Tess’s reflection in the mirror. Her brow furrowed, the Slytherin took one look at her, then closed the door. Rhian was about to call out to her when the door opened again, the same look on the girls face.

”Okay then…” she said, her hand still on the doorknob. Rhian smirked as her friend made her way over to stand behind her. Their eyes locked in the mirror. Tess crossed her arms. ”So we’re going brown now?”

Rhian grinned. “Oh, shut it.”
